When I first heard this piece, it instantly ignited something in me. I used to be profoundly obsessed with the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Apashe’s “Overture” brought back quite a few memories. I guess my take on the piece was to try and maintain the intense angsty mood of "Overture" while letting flow some Rachmaninoff-inspired rolling left hand patterns with climactic right hand melodies. I usually write through improvisation, but this time the things I imagined were too hard to play. I had to actually write out the sheet music first as I heard it in my head, then practice like a maniac until my fingers could do it. Thoroughly enjoyed the process!
