This is a brand new song which I wrote this morning called “Neck kisses”. 

This song is about an ex girlfriend who I should of been way better to. So if by the mad chance you’re listening, this one is for you bluebs.

Neck kisses (Demo)

No this is not a cover of the iconic John Lennon song. 

It’s time to get a little spiritual here on Soundcloud. Here is a new song I just wrote called “God”. This is a rough demo version, I’d like to do more with the backing vocals and the chorus when I make this a full track.

This song is about growing up catholic, religion and my general envy of people who can have faith.

This song is very inspired by Bright Eyes and The 1975, especially “If I believe you”. 

It’s quite appropriate I wrote this on a Sunday, hope you like x

Forever: a song I originally wrote in 2019 but I have since changed around some lyrics. I always like the chorus of this one though it is a little cheesy. Gives me early 2000s rock song vibes. 

The basic concept for this song is my frustration at waiting for “forever” wondering with who your forever will be with, what it will be and never being in the moment - always wanting more. I’m turning 25 now and it’s becoming a bit more of a recurring topic.

I split the song into three parts when I wrote this:

Show me: a 2016 classic. It’s still my Dad’s favourite of my songs. 

This is the first song I wrote where I felt I was actually capable of writing a decent tune. I’ll never be a great singer or guitarist: the height of my musical ambitions have always been to be a good songwriter and to use it as a form of therapy. This song was really the beginning of that process. It is also the second song I ever released so it holds a special place in my heart.

I wrote this song in 15 minutes while living in Ireland and I’ll never forget the rush I had to find a pen and write down the lyrics. I just kept repeating “I wanna take you down to a foreign place” over and over again. I think that lyric is a sexual innuendo, I can’t remember. 

It was very inspired by 50’s - 60’s music, especially simple rock n’ roll songs of the late 50’s. Was listening to a lot of Elvis, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry at the time of writing.

In terms of recording it - I have had about 70 different versions. Recorded this version on a Sunday night in my boxers trying to survive the heat of Berlin. 

I could take some advice from my 19 year old self and get off my phone and spend less them online.

Monday evening and a new song: Likely the last song I will write for awhile as I want to take a break from writing and experiment a little more with my music, my covers and do a few gigs. 

This song is called “Made it out alive (Closure)”. It is a summary of a lot of emotions I’ve felt over the past few months. It’s about learning to live by yourself, understanding where you have went wrong in your life and questioning can music give you the closure you’re looking for. That is a question I am still wondering. 

This whole songwriting cycle has helped me learn a lot about myself and what I need to improve. I think a lot about the people I’ve hurt or let down over the years and this one is for them.

A special thank you has to go to one person in particular who inspired me so much who I did not treat as I should have. I’m trying to get better and thank you for the inspiration and showing me a better way if you’re reading this. (You can hear her laughing at me being a drunk idiot in the voice note at the end)

Turning 25 tomorrow and will be putting out this whole collection of work tomorrow for the third EP in four months. Time for a new chapter.

Ok I’m addicted to songwriting. 

This is a brand new song I wrote tonight about addiction. Something I have been getting help with over the past few months. It’s an extremely challenging topic for me to write about as I did a lot of things I’m ashamed of when sick. 

For people who go through addiction, I think it can be easy to isolate yourself and think that there is no one who cares about you. When you are healing, you start to realise what you have around you and that there is people who love you.

There is always someone who you can pick up the phone to.

New week - new song: fingerpicking is not a usual style for me to use when recording a song but I felt it matched the theme. I am an extremely average guitar player at the best of times but pretty proud of this one musically. 

This one is called “Nothing at all” and is written around the old saying “It is better to feel something than nothing at all” which I can relate to but also sometimes feelings can be so strong you wish you were able to numb to them. 

This one is a demo because vocally I would like to do a way better job on it but I wrote and recorded it in 20 minutes so it will do now.

Brand new song today - “This Life”. This is a song I wrote about my thoughts when waking up and having that morning coffee or smoke. 

Fears, where your life is, what’s next, death, loss, the past, shame, joy. Sometimes we can wake up and immediately feel the weight of our life experiences - though it may be only temporary (like everything).

It’s a bit all over the place which is intentionally done to describe my thought process in the morning. 

I found it the most perfect timing that as I mention having to fly home a plane flew right over my house. 

The line in the chorus/closing is from “Life is real” which I still feel is as good a song as I’ll ever write. Tip for songwriters: always have your notes ready for little quotes, phrases you can steal from people to put into a song.

Took some inspiration from the brilliant Irish band The Cranberries for this one.

This life (Demo)

Brand new song this evening, one I wrote in the airport after my flight got delayed on Sunday. One of my favourite melodies I’ve ever written. Would love to re-record the guitar at one point in the future. 

The theme of this song is similar to many of my songs these days, it talks about acceptance of the past. Learning to grow and not carrying the weight of your past with you. It’s about understanding what you have to bring forward with you and what you have to learn to let go. 

Song writing always get me in a mindset where I think about the past, the people I care about, the people I’ve lost and the future. It becomes an amazing source of therapy.

2023 - I did not expect to have a song on here so quickly.

This is a song written by my dear friend Bianca called “Me, myself and I”. This was one of my first collaborations and I enjoyed every second of it. 

The lyrics tell the story of a people pleaser who thinks about the possibility of breaking free of the constraints they put themselves in. The concept is so clear that it makes putting music and a melody to it so easy.

Was listening to some of my old ones and found this today. Like ‘Cigarettes’ it’s one I wrote in early 2023. Themes very similar to my 2022 songs. 

This one is about looking back on someone you hurt a lot, accepting the guilt you feel for hurting them and what place such a pivotal moment in your life has in your present. 

These lyrics were not written down, they were coming as I was playing guitar. Sometimes these can be the most special songs as there is no filter. 

Looking forward to writing some songs in 2024 about where I stand now - which is a much healthier place than I was writing these songs. Nevertheless, I don’t believe in hiding the past and instead understanding that this led you to where you are today.

Born Nostalgic

Hi from a sunny Utrecht for once. Feels like awhile since I checked in with something brand new and not an old song I found. This is a very rough demo of a song I’m working on called “Doei”. 

Whether it’s with friends, relationships, the end of a tv show, the end of a record, closing of a chapter - I have always struggled with goodbyes. I always want this to end on the right terms instead of letting the natural flow of life take place. 

The lyrics also touch on my state of mind when I last wrote and where my mind is at now. Quite scattered thoughts of present past and now which has become a regular theme. 

I would love to add synths over this and some drums to fill out the track when I do it properly. This was a second take. 

Writing has been tough this year, been going through a hard spell of depression and I am very grateful to be surrounded by people I love which keeps me strong. Music has always been my higher power and right now I’m leaning on artists I love rather than writing to get me through this. 

I hope I will be able to bring some more songs out over the next little while. The past year I have been so focused on my sobriety, getting better, moving country, learning a language, travelling that I have barely had a chance to coercively put my thoughts onto paper.

On the creation of a new family tree,

Sunday evening spent working on this song that I have written a few weeks ago. Usually I’m quick to record new songs but wasn’t fully happy with what I wrote - which is why it’s a demo for now.

What breaks me: so much of this new project has been focusing on past, future and how I remove the weight of addiction, childhood, relationships and move on to the next stage of life. This song takes a dive into the past and my problematic/toxic behaviour, how I tried to justify that and how that plays out in how I manage life today with a much healthier mindset. 

When sick, you can often see yourself as the victim and be blind of the affect of your actions on others. That’s what this song is about - not feeling sorry for yourself but realising you brought a lot of the consequences on yourself. Accepting that is a part of growth. 

Song was inspired by The National, a band who have had a big impact on some of the heavier songs which will come out over the next few months.
