My dear friend and mentor, Carlos Montané made a recording with me in 2006 in his teaching studio at Indiana University. This was meant to just be a recording for my parents, for Christmas. And It's not perfect, but it is quite something. Thank you, Carlos. And thank you to our collaborative pianist, Piotr Wisniewski.

Trey Gunn and his 7d Media label have released a new sound for Bob Dylan’s “Not Dark Yet.” The soulful, drone-thick song began as a collaboration for writer-director Sonya Lea’s short film, “Every Beautiful Thing,” headed to film festivals this fall. Gunn, the composer of that film, includes this stirring version on his new album release, “The Waters, They Are Rising.” Both the film and the single showcase the voice of Dylan Nichole Bandy, who, along with HBO’s Lauren Weedman and Seattle actor Suzy Hunt, has a leading role in the ten-minute movie about the possibility of reconciliation after cruelty.

Not Dark Yet

I must have passed the crest a while ago
    And now I am going down.
Strange to have crossed the crest and not to know—
    But the brambles were always catching the hem of my gown.

All the morning I thought how proud it would be
    To stand there straight as a queen—
Wrapped in the wind and the sun, with the world under me.
    But the air was dull, there was little I could have seen.

It was nearly level along the beaten track
    And the brambles caught in my gown—
But it’s no use now to think of turning back,
    The rest of the way will be only going down.
