"Millionaire" dates back to Columbia frat party days, and it persisted into the 90s because it only has three chords, over and over again, so it was an easy one for the All-Girl Band to drag out on nights when we had to pad two sets. The chords are the same as the Student Teachers song "Looks," and the repeated line "I don't know anything at all" was stolen from the dBs song "Black and White."

Never Called Her Back

I remember seeing Longtime Companion in 1991, alone at a movie theater on Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley, and bawling my eyes out, of course, and being especially haunted by the spare acoustic song that played over the closing scene and credits. 

Months later, I got the VHS tape of the movie the day it came out because that was the only way I could learn the song and find out where it came from—the movie had no soundtrack album, and in those days, there was no internet, no IMDB, and Zane Campbell had no records out. I asked every music person I knew, but Zane had no footprint, he was just a mysterious name in the movie credits with this mysterious song.

But I was in awe of it—such a simple, perfect idea for a song—and I sang it every chance I got: I remember I played a solo-acoustic version during one of my semi-regular in-studio appearances on KALX, and my friend and collaborator Stuart Sharpe and I recorded a mostly synthetic version in his apartment studio in Noe Valley.

So when I got back to New York in 1992, the Girls started playing it, and I would always introduce the song saying, "Written by mystery man Zane Campbell, whoever he is..."

But of course, it turned out that Zane was in New York, and eventually, someone connected us. I think we all went to see him play and invited him to sing the song with us some time.

In my memory he just kind of showed up next time we played at McGovern's—no rehearsal, no soundcheck, no nothing—he just climbed onstage and sang our version, which is in a way higher key and is structurally different from his version because the movie people had cut out some verses and that was the version I copied it from.

As you can hear, he just wailed the shit of it, spine tingling. He was, and undoubtedly still, is a true eccentric hillbilly genius.

Post-Mortem Bar (Live at McGovern's featuring Zane Campbell—May 1994)

A spiritual-romantic plea sent by a Devastionalist drunk from a Sunday afternoon bender in the West Village. The title was taken from a mis-heard Van Morrison lyric. Additional lyric swipes from Rachel Sweet's "Wildwood Saloon" and American Pie. Verse chords lifted from Randy Newman's "Baltimore." The Vietnam-Vet part happened to Kris Woolsey, not me. But I did watch an early-season Bears game at Julius, and while it was a balmy and beautiful afternoon in New York, there was a blizzard in Chicago. Bill Arning saw us play the song live once, and afterwards he asked me what gay bar actually had "opera" on the jukebox—which tempted me to change the lyric. Anyhow, more or less true.

This is The Lockhorns live at McGovern's, one of the more improbable of our revolving-door line-ups: me and Tex, Ward Dotson guest-starring on guitar, and the almost farcically versatile David Terhune sitting in on the drums. Doing this song in the first place was almost certainly Joe Katz's idea.
