Dasha Rush is a Russian born artist who sees the genre as a starting place not a destination. She is a respected and well-travelled DJ and live performer, but her work is equally focussed away from the dance floor, and sometimes away from music itself. Her recent album for Raster-Noton, Sleepstep, could be a metaphor for her work: "These 16 pieces are transmissions from that state between sleep and wakefulness," said Tony Naylor, a reflection of the in-between zones her music often inhabits. Dubby but intense, brutal but tender, foggy yet clear—Sleepstep was a wonderful mass of contradictions. Not being one thing or the other is vitally important to Rush, which goes hand-in-hand with her strong independent streak. The majority of the music she's released since starting out in 2005 has come through her own Fullpanda label and, as she told us in 2013, she's resistant to playing the publicity game in the way many in the scene do. That's meant she's remained off the radar for some techno fans, but it's also given her the freedom to explore projects and sounds as she pleases. With all this mind, it was little surprise that our invitation to record a podcast was met with, "Yes, but it won't be a club mix." What we got instead was an absorbing 65 minutes of dense ambient soundscapes that shows Rush at her most reflective. The mix comes ahead of the North American premiere of Antarctic Takt, Rush's A/V show with Stanislav Glazov, at this week's Mutek festival in Montreal.

Barbecue is a personal affair of the French producer Butch. Choosing to focus on quality rather than quantity, the imprint has released 5 EPs in the last three years, all of them authored by the label chief. However, Mr. Butch is not the only participant of this particular barbecue club, with house heavyweights Red Rack’em and Terrence Parker adding their personal touch on two latest releases. 

The latest venture on Barbecue follows a similar pattern. Three sample-heavy house anthems are accompanied by a masterful remix from another prominent producer. This time Butch did not have to look far, as his fellow Frenchman Strip Steve was happy to join the party. Currently based in Berlin, the funky producer has already released with a number of respected labels, including Boysnoize, Royal Oak, Waxtefacts and his own Jazz Cabbage.

The disco-influenced remix for the second track, dubbed ‘Where is Vagi’, features flowing melodies, filtered vocals and groovy percussion - basically all the necessary ingredients for a good time. It is a vigorous house affair with some slight hip-hop influences sprinkled on top, creating an easy-going and summery vibe even though the winter season is creeping upon us. If you don’t trust us, take the word of legends like Moodymann, Session Victim or Medlar who have all supported it.

12’ is coming out on October 26th, followed by a digital release on November 17th.

We're no strangers to Philip Budny here at Bolting Bits, keeping a close watch - since his first forays into the world of blissed out house music on Church's Volumes compilation, to his recent outing on Let’s Play House - it’s been a joy watching his music develop and bloom. It’s an even greater pleasure to premiere Belfast, the A2 off of his debut album “Shades of Blue”. Coming out on Philip’s own ‘Aronia Records’ imprint, the 7-tracker is Philip’s most expansive and cohesive work to date. Belfast, built on a bed of chilled out rolling drums and embellished with all sorts of hazy ambient synthetics, is a beautiful tune perfect for any comedown, or increasingly frequent bout of the quarantine blues. Closed-eyed, foot tapping and gentle hip swaying house music at its best, pretty much what we’ve come to expect from Philip Budny.However, the more ambient leaning pieces of the album see Budny delivering some of his most exciting work yet. A personal highlight is the title track, ‘Shades of Blue’, featuring beautifully emotive harmony - played through gliding synths reminiscent of his breakout tune ‘Eclipses’ -and super groovy sparse percussion, which are some of the more left-field and exciting rhythmic arrangements he’s offered up so far in his discography. Likewise, Moritzplatz, 2013, with drifting new-age piano riffs, rainsticks, detuned deteriorating strings, ambient field recordings little a tiny touch of percussion, is a beautifully crafted moment on the album. Such cuts see Budny tread newer ground both melodically and rhythmically, and the payoff is truly rewarding.All in all a serene, soothing journey from start to end, a perfect companion for quarantine daydreaming, ’Shades of Blue’ is a must-listen.

Hi & Saberhägen are back. Originally coming to our attention via Glasgow-based Huntleys + Palmers in 2015, the duo has put out a steady stream of a couple of releases per year since then. With a brief hiatus in 2019, while only releasing a single track and focusing on solo projects, the duo are back with their first full release in two years.

Not taking themselves too seriously on social media outlets, we've noticed their music almost juxtaposes their carefree attitudes and has a sober maturity about it. "The Blood I Suck" EP is another addition to an already strong discography. Titled after... well, apparently after a booze-filled night of banter, the name of the record again shows you the contrasting sides between their personalities and the music itself (or at least so it appears). Continuing to merge live instrumentation with careful sampling and easy-going melodies, this EP encompasses what we've come to love about their music.

Today we're shedding light on the closing track "TyTB". A slowly evolving, late night journey, it fuses elements of various genres to produce a unique piece in true Hi & Saberhägen fashion. Building up slowly to reveal a dusty, lighthearted sample, the bulk of the track is a lot more somber in mood. Yet somehow, this direct contradiction in musical styles blends to create the perfect atmosphere.
