Answer Code Request is my guest in Episode 30 of Portal the podcast. We met for the first time some years ago and since then we've been constantly in contact. Surgeon, also known as Anthony Child, has been one of techno's most influential and consistently brilliant artists since the mid-'90s. For the last decade, he has spent most of his creative resources on developing his abilities as a live performer, in his usual techno environment as well as more abstract settings. As Child reinforces in this live Dekmantel Exchange with Aaron Coultate, his live performance practice is at the heart of his creativity. "There was literally one day I woke up and realized that having the computer—DJing, as it were—was getting in the way of taking this form of performing further," he says. "That was determining the structure of what I was doing. And to be truly freeform and improvisational I had to be free of this imposed structure."

This archived conversation comes on the heels of Surgeon's most recent LP, Crash Recoil, which RA music critic Kiana Mickles hailed as "one of his best albums ever." Dutch techno hero Dimi Angélis is presenting an incredible 3 hours of 100% Jeff Mills vinyl on a 2 decks set-up. Hypnotic to blistering, sci-fi to gritty, all sides of Jeff are being on this newest contribution to the series. A must listen for sure, and it includes a tracklist (scroll down!) too.

Dimi: “The mix is recorded during the last ANGLS Locked stream I’ve been doing at my studio every two weeks since we were in lockdown. Most of the time I pick a theme for the show, and after doing one on Regis, Surgeon, The Advent and Luke Slater, it was about time to do a Jeff Mills special.

This got a bit out of hand time-wise though and ended up being 4.5 (!) hours. Mills is so diverse, but in general it’s always deep. After all, this mix is kind of a club night trip. I start the mix like I would do in a club, but only added a bit more ambient and soundscape-stuff to the beginning.I found the original length being a bit too long for a podcast though, so I decided to take that first part - including the more atmosphere-y beginning - off. It’s almost 3 hours full of Mills stuff now, and overall I hope it shows his diversity and what he stands for. Almost everything he has been doing sound-wise comes along within the mix.”

It’s almost ironic that since the release of his landmark debut album, 2008’s Shedding the Past, German producer Rene Pawlowitz (a.k.a. Shed) has been viewed a savior of modern techno. His music is wildly unpredictable and doesn’t quite mesh with the genre’s obsession with rigid structure and functionalism. Held up as one of the cornerstones of the world-famous Berlin scene, Pawlowitz clashes sharply with the city’s obsession with dark, steely techno and bright tech-house grooves.
Shed’s musical vision is unaffected by the poisonous purism or close-mindedness that so often lurks in local scenes, especially one as long-established as Berlin’s unparalleled techno community. Instead, his music is colored by a distinct and ravenous hunger for the new and unexplored. Reflecting that hunger, Pawlowitz is uncommonly prolific: On top of nearly 20 releases as Shed, Pawlowitz has also made dancefloor-destroying singles as WAX and Equalized, and has explored a dubbier side as STP and Panamax Project.

Dirty Epic welcomes aboard the Los Angeles-based DJ and producer @silentservant (Sandwell District, Jealous God, Hospital Productions) for the first episode of their Amplify Series.

Juan Mendez has been composing for a decade an obscure and powerful techno under the name of Silent Servant. Cradled as a teenager by post-punk, the Californian has retained the taste for dark and tense atmospheres, which can be found in his polished and violent productions. 
Released at the end of 2018, on the prestigious Hospital Productions label, “Shadows Of Death And Desire” is his second album. It continues the path carved out by “Negative Fascination”, published in 2011, which is a true electro-noise manifesto of fascinating darkness.

Hyperactive man of multiple projects (Tropic Of Cancer, label Cytrax, art director), he draws his inspiration from the DIY 70s’ post punk and wave obscurities and later on, electronic warehouse parties in DTLA.

Nobody can escape the ravages of Silent Servant.
