“Always Busy” is a blend of precision and chaos, tailor-made for dancefloors. Gated synths slice sharply through the mix with surgeon-like precision, while an undulating bassline establishes a pulsating foundation. The vocoder groove adds a hypnotic pull, weaving in rhythms that keep the energy peaking. Washed-out moments provide just enough space to breathe before the track plunges back into its relentless drive. Schizophrenic vocal snippets flit through the arrangement, adding an edge of unpredictability. This is pure, unadulterated club tackle.

This is the recording of a totally improvised hardware live performance. Nothing is prepared beforehand. You can hear the music being created and destroyed as it's happening and that was as exciting for me as it is for the audience. 

This is a very risky way to perform. 
As I step up to play I have nothing, I have to create the music there in that moment. The audience is participating in that risk and that adds to the energy and creates a unique atmosphere and sense of excitement. Understanding the technicalities of the machines I'm using is not important. What is important is the energy of music being created right there in that moment. That creates a far deeper connection between myself and the audience than I've ever experience with playing back pre recorded music.

Surgeon Live at Dockyard Warehouse Festival, Zaandam. The Netherlands. 9th April 2016

"The sound of CPU reflects Sheffield's musical heritage, forged with that of Detroit Techno and Braindance (Rephlex et al.) But there's a strong syncopated beat influence over the curation which has dominated, hence CPU being known and lauded as an electro imprint.

Another thing you will notice about CPU is the stark and brutal sleeve designs. Each sleeve has an 8-bit binary* catalogue number** on the front centred in an Alien-esque logo, the number being the only thing that visually distinguishes each release.

This mix contains upcoming releases, demos and unreleased tracks on CPU and its sub-label Computer Club, a more experimental branch which also doubles as a club night in Sheffield. I think the mix gives a clear representation of the label and its direction. It was an absolute pleasure to do as I rediscovered some old favourites during the process. I hope you enjoy it and check out the label sometime.
