Hey Guys! Rich (Disasterpeace) here, I wanted to give you a glimpse into the very early process, concepting and sketching of the music for Hyper Light Drifter. This is the very first thing I've gotten the chance to write, and is by no means a finished piece of music. I envision what is here so far as the opening section of a much longer piece that plays during gameplay, which would evolve and grow right as this version of the track ends. It really is a brief glimpse, and the most preliminary, but maybe we'll look back in a few months and be surprised at how far we've come! Or maybe I hit the nail on the head, I guess we'll find out!

This started as a simple 2 chord sketch on acoustic guitar, recorded back in 2012. I was thinking of using it for the first world of the game, and had called it "Autumn" along those lines. After revisiting it, I thought it might work better for the water world, in which I wanted a chill, laid back vibe. Also, Ian had already done music for the autumn level, and while I think he intended to have me replace all of his work, I was pretty fond of it and inspired by it, so I was more than happy to leave his work in. This production all came together only a few days before the game was released. I spent a good bit of time exploring other ideas for the ocean world, but many did not pan out. I tried mapping notes to the geography of levels, and some pretty weird and interesting phasing ideas, which felt too chaotic. Those tunes actually ended up in the last level of the game.

'Chamber of the Goddess' is a mellow fusion that would not be far removed from a 70's B-side. Featuring music from 'A Link to the Past'.

Fabulous Beasts - Kickstarter Sketches

This is an early concept from the development of Mini Metro. I was trying to figure out what the music might be like in the game, and one idea I had was to write a very simple piece of music that transpired over the course of one in-game week, that also captured the ups and downs of a stereotypical week, commuting each morning weekday to and fro, partying on friday night, hungover on saturday, etc. Each hour is about 0.83 seconds long.

One Week

The Mud Water Project is a multidisciplinary theater project of 12 turf dancers and ballet dancers, as well as music and spoken word artists. Utilizing acting and improvisational dance, while exploring real human emotions and life experiences, the project seeks to give the turf dance community opportunities to share its stories, art, and truths in a concert-style setting and to audiences often beyond its reach. 

The project began in early spring of 2015. It's mission is: (1) to rejuvenate the dance and theatre arts community by pushing the envelope with respect to diversity and in creating sophisticated, cutting-edge work; (2) to celebrate, promote visibility, and support viability of the undervalued street performance art in the San Francisco and East Bay areas; and (3) to traverse the barriers of understanding embedded in class/cultural differences, by facilitating honest dialogue through thought-provoking artistic expression and storytelling.

Mud Water's rare success story began on Kickstarter and quickly took the press by storm. The result: three sold-out performances that received standing ovations. The project has been featured on NPR, KQED, and the EAST BAY EXPRESS.

In the hopes of continuing this story, we are currently working on gathering enough funding to produce a full (evening) length show before we can resume rehearsals. If you would like to help support this project, you can!
