ENSEMBLE 010 - Marina Herlop - Cuando coño se dice ole

‘Sounds of the Modern Hospital' - Volume 1 in the Sonograph Sound Effects Series - is a long-playing sound effects record in a limited edition of 250 copies. The record was produced by Mark Vernon during a two year period as digital artist in residence at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Scotland.

The sounds featured on the LP were recorded in several different hospital departments including: Anaesthesiology, the Clinical Simulation Centre, Health Records, Outpatients reception, the Laboratories, Ophthalmology, Oral and Maxillofacial, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, the Mail Room, the Neonatal Unit, Pharmacy and the Renal Unit. In addition to Forth Valley Royal, recordings were also made in Stirling and Falkirk Community Hospitals. Thanks to all staff and patients in NHS Forth Valley Hospitals for their help and co-operation.

A selection of tracks from ‘Hairwaves:  a cautionary tale’ 

A radio station, audio CD and publication devoted to all aspects of hair. 'Hairwaves' was a collaboration between Zoë Irvine, Mark Vernon and Freight Design with specially commissioned illustrations by Danielle Lemaire. Created from recordings and interviews made in hairdressers and hair establishments between 2001 and 2006, the scope of the project quickly broadened out to include pet grooming, wig making and psychic barbers.

“...from anecdotes blowing hot and cold on the subject of hairdryers, to accounts of the bald facts on barbers. We have snipped and textured, layered, added some highlights and brushed away the clippings so we can now offer up this cautionary tale.”

The publication and CD 'Hairwaves: a cautionary tale' was launched at the CCA, Glasgow with a live, day-long RSL radio broadcast targeted at all salons, hairdressers and barber shops within the broadcast radius. As well as featuring works from the audio CD the broadcast included contributions received from an open call for radio works and music on the theme of ‘hair’.

The original Hairwaves FM radio broadcast went out across Glasgow on 87.7fm on the 8th December 2006. The CD was featured on Radio 3’s Mixing It and a highlights show aired on Resonance FM later the same year.

Si de algo fui testigo en estos días de cuarentena y autoconfinamiento fue del incremento de mi escucha. De pronto, la calle cambió de sonidos, se limpió de algunos y dio protagonismo a otros. Y en unos días ya había comenzado a tomar conciencia del paso del tiempo a partir de los sonidos que entraban por mi ventana. 

Pensando en ello, en que de alguna manera estaba viendo florecer una especie de jardín sonoro lo mismo dentro de casa que allá afuera, pensé en rendirles tributo. ¿Cómo? Con la menor palabrería posible. Para eso me iban a ayudar los haikus, en su extrema y contundente brevedad. 

Escribí varios pensando en convertir esos sonidos en imágenes, o mejor dicho, tratando de que fueran una invitación a imaginarse la escena sonora. Cuando los escribía, llegó otra idea, la mejor, me parece: tender una conexión con mi gente más querida y la que más cercana ha estado en estos días de confinamiento a pesar de toda (in)sana distancia. 

Le pediría a 12 de ellxs que leyeran el haiku para esta pieza. Cuando escuché uno a uno en casa y me conmoví hasta las lágrimas (fue hermoso escuchar sus voces después de tantos días sin contacto cara a cara con ellos; solo mensajes de texto) supe que para eso me había inventado eso de participar en un concurso que cerró antes de que pudiera enviar mi pieza. 

Esta pieza es para mí. Para estar con ellos cada vez que los extrañe. Para que sepan que los quiero. Y lo mucho que amo escuchar. Y escucharlos.
