With a million goose bumps, I present you to 'Go Astray' (aka KlangSchwester & Karl Grunder) reinterpreting the seminal 1984 hit that launched the career of one of the sexiest women and sultriest singers on the planet, Sade Adu. I believe it's quite probable that this deeply passionate remake is better than the original. Sabrina's vocal is that of an angel. Ummm.... WOW! Wow! wow! Speechless!

Warning!! Be prepared to be blown away! Next submission for the 1984 comes from our very own Tom Slatter (aka a quality without a name). Many of you know him to be somewhat of a perfectionist so it will come as no surprise that his cover/reinterpretation of the classic summer hit of 1984, 'Time After Time' by Cyndi Lauper is an absolute SHOW STOPPER. Add to that the beautifully delicate vocal by Lyndsie Alguire and... Boom! Magic happens!

It is with great pleasure that we submit to you, The latest instalment in the 1984 Compilation; Liza Nicklin's adventurous Instrumental reinterpretation of Alison Moyet's hugely successful single 'Love Resurrection' from her 1984 breakout album 'Alf'. This funky booty shaker from Liza goes well beyond Resurrection into a full blown Re-Incarnation! Resistance is Futile!

Wow! Let me just grab my breath here... 'It'll End In Tears' was the 1984 Debut Album of a group of already renowned 4AD artists including Dead Can Dance, Howard Devoto and Elizabeth Frazer (Cocteau Twins)to name a few. Had they formed in 2014, I can only imagine that this coveted list of artists would have also included Arielle Esther. In what can only be described as an ethereal masterpiece, Arielle has lovingly re-crafted and dare I say "improved immensely" on one of the stand-out tracks of the album, 'Song to the Siren'. Words beyond this fail to do justice...

Run-DMC is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential and best known acts in the history of hip hop culture. They were also the first group in the genre to be awarded a gold album (Run–DMC, 1984) and be nominated for a Grammy Award. The world of Hip Hop, Rap, and even today's R&B Artists will forever be indebted to them. Benjamin Wylie (Siren Sun front-man) has taken on the brave and hefty task of reinterpreting their break-out single, 'It's Like That' and transforming it into a booty-shaking, hybrid filter house/new school, vocoder driven, android floor filler! We challenge your body to resist it's primal urge to move!

Icehouse are an Australian rock band, formed as Flowers in 1977 in Sydney. Initially known in Australia for their pub rock style, they later achieved mainstream success playing new wave and synth-pop music and attained Top 10 singles chart success in both Europe and the U.S. 'Sidewalk' was the third album for Icehouse, released in June 1984 on Regular Records / Chrysalis Records and reached No. 8 on the National albums chart with singles "Taking the Town" & "Don't Believe Anymore". James McGauran's homage to 'Don't Believe Any More' has paid an incredible amount of respect to the original version, painstakingly re-crafting every minute detail to capture and distil every ounce of it's deeply emotional content. James' reputation for being somewhat of a perfectionist is reinforced in this powerful rendition of Icehouse's hit track. Thanks James. This is stunning!

Don't Believe Anymore (Icehouse Cover) - James McGauran

This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get is a 1984 album by Public Image Ltd. It was the band's fourth official studio album and includes the single "Bad Life", and a re-recorded version of a "This Is Not a Love Song", which had been a No. 5 UK and international hit when released as a single in 1983. An early version of the album was released in 1983 by founding PiL guitarist Keith Levene as Commercial Zone. The album was then re-recorded in 1984 after Levene's departure from the band, with no contributions from either Levene or bassist Pete Jones. 

The song "The Order of Death" appears in the 1990 science fiction film, Hardware and also featured in the Miami Vice episode, "Little Miss Dangerous". 2014 sees 'The Order of Deaths' resurrection from the grave by long-time PiL fan, Gravity Feeder. It still has the same heart beat but there is new blood running through the veins of this all-time PiL classic. Enjoy!

Pseudo Echo are an Australian new wave band formed in 1982 in Melbourne. They released their début album, Autumnal Park in 1984 which peaked at No. 11 on the Australian Kent Music Report and had Australian top 20 hits with "Listening" (reaching No.4), "A Beat for You" (No. 12), "Stranger in Me" and "Dancing Till Midnight". "His Eyes", another album track also received overseas exposure when it was used in the film Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. Rock music historian Ian McFarlane, stated they "combined flash clothes, blow-wave hairstyles, youthful exuberance and made accessible synth-pop for a ready-made audience among teenagers who fawned on the band's every move". 

Melbourne artist and avid lover of the New Romantic sound, AudioblivioN (aka Jake ObLivion) has painstakingly reproduced Pseudo Echo's début hit, "Listening" in such minute detail, that if it weren't for the fat analogue sound and the new vocal, I could have easily mistaken it for the original in the those glorious opening bars. While this may prove more meaningful to Australians in the context of musical history, one look at the comments on Amazon from those around the globe who have since discovered Pseudo Echo's Autumnal Park will convince you that this is a part of musical history worth acquainting yourself with. Congratulations, Jake. You have completely nailed it!

E-CON 1984 COMPILATION ANNOUNCEMENT

Time Zone was an electro band headed by Afrika Bambaataa who worked with a range of different musicians for each Time Zone project. In December 1984, Time Zone released their most well-known single, "World Destruction". A collaboration between Bambaataa, ex-Sex Pistol/Public Image Ltd. leader John Lydon, and producer/bassist Bill Laswell. The "World Destruction" single was arranged by Laswell after Lydon and Bambaataa had acknowledged respect for each other's work. Afrika Bambaataa: "I was talking to Bill Laswell saying I need somebody who's really crazy, man, and he thought of John Lydon. I knew about all the Sex Pistols and Public Image stuff, so we got together and we did a smashing crazy version, and a version where he cussed the Queen something terrible, which was never released." Although this single did pre-date Run-DMC and Aerosmith's "Walk This Way", it is sometimes incorrectly referred to as the first rap-rock record. This is not true as Run-DMC had incorporated hard rock guitar into songs, most notably "Rock Box", in April 1984. Having said that, World Destruction is still by far the most inspired collaboration of it's type to this very day.

30 years later, DevilMonkey (aka James Cain) has raised World Destruction from the ashes of Nuclear Armageddon, taken the fragments into the Wetlands Studio Sound System and rebuilt it molecule by molecule (like some crazy scientist) into an inspired, Dubtronic homage to Lydon and Bambaataa. With the aid of Benjamin J. Wylie on the vocals, I have never felt so relaxed about the end of the world, mon. We begin bombing in 5 minutes!

World Destruction (Timezone Cover) - DevilMonkey Feat Benjamin J. Wylie

Ghostbusters" is a 1984 song recorded by Ray Parker, Jr. as the theme to the film of the same name starring Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd. Parker saw a cheap commercial for a local service that reminded him that the film had a similar commercial featured for the fictional business. This inspired him to write the song as a pseudo-advertising jingle that the business could have commissioned as a promotion. Huey Lewis sued Parker over the similarities between "Ghostbusters" and Lewis' "I Want a New Drug". The matter was settled out of court. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Ghostbusters was nominated at the Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song but lost out to Stevie Wonder. 

Well folks, this appears to be the final song for the 1984 Compilation and what better way could there be to bookend a wonderful collection of inspired covers and re-workings than with this cheeky interpretation of 'Ghost Busters' by crazy Sydney-Sider, Psychacia (aka Robert Townsend). We warned him, "Robert.. Whatever you do, do NOT cross the streams". Robert crossed the streams! There is no Parker, Only Townsend!... and I am totally possessed by this track! Awesome job mate!
