LP Demo Description: 

“The Pillbox” LP Demo is an exploration of love, resistance, and identity. It tells the story of making a deal with the devil, only to realise that not everything is as it seems—and that such choices may carry consequences that could destroy you. e.m.arson draws inspiration from the myth of Persephone and Hades—six months in Hell, six on Earth—mirroring the shifting of the seasons. The album reflects themes of justice, immorality, revenge, self-discovery, and truth prevailing. 

The LP’s title, “The Pillbox”, is inspired by the cultural history of women being given pills instead of tools and support. The term 'pillbox' originally referred to small cylindrical or hexagonal containers used for storing medication. Ironically, the same term was later used to describe beach defence structures during WWI and WWII, and also mid-century women's hats—highlighting a contrast between defence, suppression, and style. 

This record is rooted in untold women’s stories and the struggles of power imbalances—from the witch trials in Norfolk to the journey of finding and using your voice. It’s about learning not to be silenced and embracing the process of shedding old skin—a symbol of growth and reinvention. Lyrics such as “I dreamed a dream, where life goes forward, not back—don’t turn back” come from original prose by e.m.arson, inspired by a family proverb: “It’s not the dead you should fear, it’s the living,” alongside the cautionary tale “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” These references echo the album's darker contemplations, while also affirming that light and goodness can prevail even in the face of hardship. 

There’s also an acknowledgment that not everyone can afford the help they need — but music, creativity and community can offer powerful outlets through which to navigate life’s rocky terrain and allow healing to take place.

About These Recordings: 

The recording method was entirely DIY. e.m.arson's process was heavily inspired by her grandfather’s story of “hashmagandy,” a tale about truck drivers combining unlabelled tins of food—beautifully illustrating the power of resourcefulness and imperfection. This ethos is embedded in her recording approach. e.m.arson champions so-called "flaws", vulnerability, and authenticity. Each track on this album was recorded in one take, improvised to create raw, eerie, haunting, introspective, and surrealist aural landscapes. Abstraction in this record is intentional, aiming to provoke listeners to unplug and tune out. While not post-punk in sound, e.m.arson embodies its spirit at the core of her artistic practice. The LP features her personal field recordings, original prose and poetry experimental guitar work, deconstructed pedals, and the creative use of kitchen utensils.
