I started working on this piece in 2018 during one of the lowest points in my life. I was isolated from friends, going through a breakup, using substances to escape my problems, and grappling with complex mental health issues.
The process of remixing and reworking this track became somewhat excessive. I had to deal with subpar stems that had been processed countless times, navigating different laptops and setups, and fixing things that seemed almost impossible to work with. At one point, I didn't even know which key I was in (shoutout to Nate for the help). Releasing this track feels profound to me, especially considering the difficulties I faced along the way. It was a challenge to recapture the same mindset I had when I initially started working on it.
 I can't quite explain why I held onto this piece for so long, but it represents the first time I could express myself in ways words couldn't capture. That alone made it a deeply powerful experience for me. I hope that listeners will find their own personal connections and meanings within this piece.

Just Holdin’ On (Instrumental)’, a standalone single lifted from the upcoming Notes (Deluxe Edition) - an expanded re-release featuring edits, remixes, and live versions from Haines’ album Notes.

Stripping away the vocal of the original, the instrumental version puts the composition’s architecture in sharp focus: a downtempo, chilled hip-hop pulse, boom-bap drums from Marc Mac (4 Hero), and a lush Rhodes progression by Michal Martyniuk. With the space cleared, Haines’ saxophone and flute melodies step to the fore, long-line phrases and subtle harmonics that underline the tune’s mood of quiet momentum.
