Sanctuary (TOTHM and Cosmic Keanu)

First song I am posting in 2024!

This is what I wrote in 2013 when I first thought about posting Nothing But (The Sound) but decided to take it down from the cloud short after. 

"Nothing But (The Sound)" is Plastic Inevitable's first song since 2011! Plastic Inevitable is Marty Procaccio, AKA Blankets, working the sound and Sneekie San Salvador tweaking the sound. The recording for this song began in 2011 in the bedroom recording studio of Marty in Santa Clara California using GarageBand and a whole bunch of pedals. The song was completed in 2013 with vocals recorded in Sneekie San Salvador's mobile Toyota recording unit.

Now it is 11 years later...

I am amazed that I found the vocal stems. I had to look though an old hard drive to find them. I did not feel like digging through more old hard drives for the original track stems. Big thanks to Russell for taking the time to mix the vocals and master the track. I told Russell, when I mixed the original instrumental I was listening to a lot of shitgaze bands at the time. 

May you find many gems when you dig into your past.

This song started when Xian and Holger came up with the rhythm section. Xian reached out to Josh about adding some guitar and keys. Josh happily accepted and added some electric guitar, organ, and synth. Once he was done, he sent it back to Xian, who added his excellent vocals. Tez also added some subtle, yet thrilling psychedelic guitar to it, too, before producing and mixing it for us. 
 During a little odyssey Xian recently undertook, he came across this snippet of text, from which the lyrics were drawn, in the Museum of Literature in Dublin. It's from "Ulysses" (1923) by James Joyce (1882-1941) and he liked it immediately. The passage can be found in the episode "Cyclops", in which the novel's hero, Bloom, opposes division and prejudice.
 This is the first time Xian has collaborated with Josh and Tez, but we hope it won't be the last. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

As a child growing up in Liverpool during the eighties, I witnessed first hand the struggles people had to endure because of the government’s neglect of our city. The government got away with neglecting its children, whilst Yosser and no doubt many like him had theirs taken away.

Yosser Hughes, the fictional character from Alan Bleasdale's incredible television series 'Boys from the Blackstuff', depicted a single father unable to find work whilst trying to look after his three children. 

The perception of Yosser back then, and probably still now is that he was a crazy, weak, and dangerous person. The reality though, is that Yosser’s behaviour was fuelled by many factors, not just povery, lack of work, and a broken relationship that we witness on screen.

Mental health awareness was zilch back then and most men today like Yosser find it impossible to talk about their struggles in life. This is largely due to the stigma of being perceived as weak. The only person he felt that he could open up to was a priest behind a veiled confessional box, who seemingly offered no help, support or guidance.

There will have been many traumatic events in Yossers life, all as a result of a cycle of poverty and lack of support and understanding that was generationally passed down. 

Yosser struggled on with his failing mental health, but clearly his love remained for his children. He kept looking for work, feeding his children, doing the best he could with what little he had. He like many was unfortunately doomed to succeed, and yet if he had been given help and support he could have brought his children up and been there for them. His wife, like Yosser just another casualty of the continuing cycle of victims, and sadly their children next.

Anyone struggling with their mental health should break free from the societal  stigma and speak to someone. You’re only human and can’t carry that weight alone. You are not alone and It’s ok to be vulnerable, it’s what makes us human. Just please ask someone for help!

Additionally, If you know someone who may be struggling with things, ask them if they want to talk, lend your ear, normalize their worries or concerns, and encourage them to seek help and support.

The remarkable precision of our electronic music is far too perfect, it lacks colors, emotions, imperceptible details of imprecision which gives it a different flavor.
So I inflict hours of torment on myself in this area to break and circumvent this precision, which is certainly a good thing, but which harms the development of my music which I wish to be human.

Hey…. So I put down the slide guitar the other day, and picked up the mandolin after a slide solo wasn’t working. Then did this little song. A rather surreal look at the metaphysics of stars as they relate to us. Occasionally, we are at a loss to make sense of this life. I find perspective in observing the night sky, among other things, even if for only a brief moment. Hanging out with others helps too. So does playing music. I usually laugh at myself in those moments and realize just how fascinating life can be. I mentioned this story before, but in a different context. I have been ‘caretaking’ a fire ant colony for over twenty years. The common sense of today’s world would seek to destroy the colony, as labeling them as ‘nuisance pests’ comes with a dire consequence for the ants. Fire ants bite only to get a grip and then sting (from the abdomen) and inject a toxic alkaloid venom called solenopsin. Anyway, the colony had been in my neighbor’s yard decades ago, and I did my best to encourage him not to destroy the colony. But after seeing a friend of his riding over the colony with a riding lawn mower, I knew the colony was doomed if it stayed there. Then one day, while emptying the kitchen compost bucket into the compost pile, I saw a long trail of fire ants coming from my neighbor’s yard into mine. They had begun to build a mound near a brush pile in the back. So the ants have been here for 5 years or so. Sure, they may strip an aspen sapling bare, or try and sneak into my vegetable garden, but for the most part, they have been good neighbors. They have come out of their mound now that it is a little warmer. I was cleaning up the gardens in the back, and noticed hundreds of them working on their mound. I looked yesterday and I saw this one ant carrying a large twig, way bigger than him, on top of the mound. As he walked, the twig was waving back and forth like a sword raised in the air. I laughed (to myself) and realized it had been a while since I had done so. This song is about all those little things in life, like that, that bring us back…. Hope you like it. Recalling some tequila, love words and more with them in that Ibiza bar, I wondered: “What if Pink Floyd met the spirit of Camarón de la Isla… in my bedroom?” I used lots of guitars, basses, etc. on a 12/8 beat, to enclose 3/4, 6/4 & 8/8 rhythms along.

This is the third song Janine Levinson https://soundcloud.com/janinelevinson and I recorded in this week's sessions. I was pretty stoked on her vocal arrangement. This song is about small family farms that go into foreclosure because of climate change or are bullied out of existence by larger agricultural businesses. Remember,  buy local from farmer's markets if you have one in your area. The veggies taste better too.
