Eagle's path to Tennessee involved a “temporary break with reality” that ultimately found him behind bars for a breaking-and-entering charge involving a Florida church, then in a state mental facility. While putting the rat race on pause for six months, Eagle was given permission to play guitar and sing as a form of therapy. By the time he was released with a clean bill of health, he'd evolved into a genuine songwriter. 
 
Drawn to blues and American folk music, he headed to Memphis, where he began playing local shows — including opening for Valerie June and then attracting the attention of the self-proclaimed “last of the original delta-bluesmen,” Zeke Johnson. (1942-2019) Zeke took Eagle under his wing as his mentor, passing on to him some the delta-blues that Mississippi Fred McDowell had passed on to Zeke years before.
 
After cutting his teeth in Memphis, Eagle relocated once again, this time to Nashville. There, he rolled his influences into an expanded sound, playing a brand of redemptive rock & roll that nodded to iconic artists of the past while tapping into the sound of today’s obsession with nostalgia and the return of analog recording.
 

Clean Machine make raw, left-of-center rock & roll. It's a sound that's grounded in the rootsy stomp of the band's Nashville headquarters, as well as the sunny influence of Johnson's childhood years in Florida. Eagle Johnson & Clean Machine nod to both of those locations with their debut album, Tennessee Beach. Sometimes punchy, sometimes psychedelic, and always melodic, Tennessee Beach is the sound of a songwriter who has rebelled, traveled, sinned, and done hard time before coming out on the other side with renewed inspiration.

Recorded to analog tape in three days at East Nashville's Bomb Shelter studio, Tennessee Beach reaches into Johnson's past — including a run-in with the law that ultimately landed him behind bars; a musical awakening while spending time in a hospital for mental evaluation; a mentorship with Memphis blues artist Zeke Johnson; and a relocation to Nashville — for a track list about loving, leaving, and living with intention. It's an album that casts a net as wide and compelling as Eagle Johnson's own history, setting the whole thing to a soundtrack of melodic hooks and electric guitars.
