As the clouds slowly began to part and the sun started to rise the birds began to sing as they echoed in another new dawn. Perhaps this was what the world had been waiting for? A chance to start afresh and renew the senses which had been burdened and blinded by a cloak of darkness for far too long. There was hope this year, a chance for change. That was all they had left to cling on to as they looked forward to better days to come, when the clouds might never return. 

Eamon Harkin is best known for his role as one half of New York based party purveyors and label Mister Saturday Night. Over the years he has also released material via the likes of Argot, Coastal Haze, Throne of Blood and Subway Series. Now he is set to release a new EP via Oklahoma City based record label Fixed Rhythms. A positive EP showcasing his broad appreciation for house music and people.

For this new 12" on Fixed Rhythms, he delivers a balmy 4 track EP, simultaneously full of longing, bliss, and hope. Adeptly oscillating between techno and house, these ear-worm, tastefully catchy tracks will find themselves perfectly at home both on reopened, outdoor summer dance floors as well as on bedroom stereo systems. If you do find yourself on a reopened dance floor, you may end up shedding a joyful tear to one of these tracks.

“Hope This Year” has a bassline that could roll forever. Soaring synths, a tastefully intricate acid line, claps, and syncopated hi-hats. It’s fresh, but with an old-school house swagger. “Latin Class” cruises through outer space at light-speed right out the gate. Some definite Eurodisco influence can be heard on this one just as much as classic house and techno. Lots of spacey panning, perfect for the late night aural trip. 

Flip to the B-side. “Ataraxy” has a funky and stabbing bass line, panned synth pings, dubby hi-hats, delayed-out pads and cosmic modular bursts. Spacey and jacky house at its finest. “People Are All That We Have” closes out the EP with a longer, heady, sensitive, emotional, beautiful journey of a track. Fitting anywhere nicely in a set, this one will definitely bring out the hugs on the dancefloor. 

“People Are All That We Have” drops Friday, June 11th on Fixed Rhythms.

In early 2009, Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter launched @mistersaturdaynight. The party formed the roots of what would eventually become the beloved nightspot @nowadaysnyc, a “by us, for us” club that’s become a community hub for NYC’s nightlifers. Following the release of a sprawling box-set to mark the party’s 15th anniversary, Harkin, Carter and a few of the compilation’s featured artists filled us in on what makes Mister Saturday Night so special.

Excited to share the recording of a 3hr set live from Waking Life festival in Portugal from earlier this summer. This set is one of my favorites of the year, full of ‘Mister’ anthems for a fresh audience and 2024 favorites that have been working a treat on home soil at Nowadays

Truth be told I hadn’t heard too much about the festival before receiving the invite to come play and so travelled to Portugal with an open mind and a managed expectation. What I experienced was one of the most fulfilling festival experiences I’ve ever had as a DJ or punter. There was joy, freedom, mischief and a sense of acceptance in the air which I quickly felt and rode as best I could for the next 3 hours. 

Major props to the folks working hard to produce and preserve a truly special vibe in a truly magical location.

Known as one the most adventurous promoters in New York, Eamon Harkin has cultivated something more than mere parties. Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday (nee Sunday Best) are the stuff of legend. Great music on a great system, in a great space. IIt’s a party put together by Eamon & his partner Justin Carter, gents who understand atmosphere, who bring more than a flash drive full of digital promos to set off the dancefloor.
Harkin’s devotion is evident. In addition to a busy schedule of parties in Brooklyn, he’s taking MSN to Chicago and London in early 2012 as well as doubling down in the studio. Following several collaborative singles and remixes as Harkin & Raney (Throne of Blood, Wurst Music Company, On The Prowl), “Rigor Music” is Harkin’s first ever solo EP of orignal material. A brand new label based on his long-running parties is also in the works.
“Electric Light” is nothing if not confident. Expansive without feeling overblown, the song’s build-up is matched only by the dubby subterranean stomp of the Brendon Moeller's (Deep Space/Mule Electronic/Rekids/Steadfast/Throne of Blood) dub mix. On the reverse, Harkin toughens up the proceedings. “Rigor Music” is a propulsive acid track that feels classic without staying utterly beholden to its predecessors. Unsurprisingly, the Roman Flugel mix closes out the single in a storm of snarling synths, snares and speaker-shaking bass.

The digital version of the Rigor Music EP also includes “Electric Light” (Brendon Moeller Reshape) as an exclusive bonus track.

What is the role of white DJ playing the music born from black people? That’s a question that has been sitting with me in the days since the passing of George Floyd and the conversations I’m listening to and taking part of as dance music wrestles with it’s existential future. 

It’s an uncomfortable question but a vital conversation and one I’m going to strive to stay open within and contribute to. For any white DJ who steps up to play this music it’s critical that we do so in an ethical, educated and conscious way.

I was recently asked to record a mix for the online edition of the Celtronic festival, which was celebrating it’s 20th year. I decided to make a mix from music from the black artists whose music I collected and cherished over the years. Celtronic is based in Derry, Ireland where I was born and grew up. It’s an almost exclusively white community and the audience at the festival is fervent and young, so I hope this mix serves to lead a few curious listeners towards a deeper exploration of the roots of dance music. It features excerpts from a talk by Robin DiAngelo on White Fragility at the beginning and end.
