All ripping, flicking, bopping, & scraping sounds originating from the humble hero of the kitchen, the paper towel. A fun, quick study for me in processing a very quiet recording into something percussive.

Released 2022 on New Weird Australia's Collapse Theories compilation album.

Named for the buzzy, insectile sounds which abound in this work, I started composing at a time of great uncertainty in my life. While perhaps not evident in the final structure, I envisioned a long, straight highway on a lonely plain at night. As the work goes on, and my metaphorical eyes adjust to the new situation, more possibilities light up the night.

Paranoia is comprised of field recordings made at Bundanon, an artistic residence set deep in the bushland on Australia’s south coast. The work and its title reflects a common sensation for novice solo bushwalkers; the sometimes comforting, sometimes chilling sensation of believing that you’re not quite alone out there. Rather than portraying the sounds of the wild as they really are, the piece gets inside the listener’s head both metaphorically and psycho-acoustically: the phenomenon of in-head acoustic imaging creates a cavernous eco-system inside the listener’s head. Paranoia features sharp cuts between real and imagined sounds, frenetic pacing, and occasional moments of tranquil beauty. 

This 60-second edition was composed for Phonurgia Nova's 2019 call-out for 60-second radio works. I thought it was a cool snippet to make available to the public. A sound art snack, if you will.

La pièce a eu sa création publique le 14 février 2020 au Festival Présences 2020 à la Maison de la Radio (Paris)
