I know that what to clean and lubricate with has been a hot topic.

I have a couple almost unused Selectric IIs, one of which I purchased
new when in college and kept since then, and another I got from an
office which opened and then very quickly shut down, with this unit at a
desk that the secretary was never hired to sit at, so I'm pretty sure it
is a low time machine, too. Since then I have used them sparingly,
usually just to fill out a form or have fun typing on the old friends.

I know that the rollers and platen get hard from both inactivity and
time, and some folks will go to great lengths including using a lathe to
remove a bit and then put even shrink wrap and other stuff over it to
make it soft enough so typing can impress deeply enough to transfer ink
from the ribbon to the paper.
