All vinyl, Early Reggae and contemporary Roots and Dub mix, for The Village Fete meets Love Culture

I made this mix for Bass Foundation Sound in India.......They were India's first Reggae Sound System and they're breaking new ground throughout the country........When I played in India, I found, to my happy surprise, that the people there love deep roots.............This is a deep roots mix for them to meditate to.

Deep Roots in Delhi...An all vinyl mix for Bass Foundation Sound System  in Delhi

Delhi Sultanate has long pioneered the sounds of reggae and hip hop in India. In addition to his solo career, he owns and runs @bassfoundationroots sound system with his partner Begum X. New Delhi's first hand built reggae sound system. He is also lead vocalist for India's first ska and rocksteady band The Ska Vengers.

BFR Sound System play strictly vinyl selection across a range of Jamaican genres and a vast collection of dubplates. The sound supports free speech, political activism and community development. They are on a mission to take reggae music to the heart of India and connect worldwide.

Delhi says, "Reggae music means different things to different people and each one of us, selectors, artists, promoters have a role to play in what it can become. Reggae can be banal, meaningless hippie feel good music, it can be murder music, it can be homophobic and materialistic. 

Reggae can also express ideas of pan-Africanism, Blackness and Negritude connecting us to the philosophy of Aime Cesaire and the grandiose worlds of thought of Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X. It can forever remind us of the brutality of colonial history and the grace and dignity of those who have fought against it. This is what sets reggae apart from all other popular forms of music. To quote Sizzla, “We wont bow to the colonial slave master nor their principle – not time at all  - that is why we have reggae music – reggae music don’t only mean you come sing and dance and put on red gold and green nothing nah guh so”.

I try to cut dubs in a unique way so when people come to a BFR Sound System session, they get a chance to hear from their favourite artists in ways they have not before. Sometimes, I also like to develop a theme through riddim selections. 

The mix opens with a couple of cuts on a version of the Money Money Money riddim produced by Chris McGuiness. The original tune is a combination with myself, Sizzla and a singer from India called Comrade Bant Singh and has not yet been released. It’s my wish that some of you google who Bant Singh is and learn about his story. 

Bant Singh, was attacked by powerful land lords in his area for fighting a case against them after the rape of his daughter. He was attacked so viciously that his arms and legs had to be amputated. Not long after the operation, he was on his hospital bed. Singing songs against the opressors. His words are like drops of blood.

After a few cuts on Sizzla’s version of ‘Everyman a Little Way Different’ you’ll hear a one away cut of Errol Dunkleys tune. This is an acetate from the mighty Coxsone collective. I don’t believe that this version of the cut was ever released.

Heres a mix recorded for Shane Woolman's Adventures in Sound that celebrates the underrated 90’s/2000 dancehall riddims, no vocals just B-sides from the record collection mixed like  techno or breaks.  Many of the B-sides just say version, so the main title is included in some of the track listing.  There are a few modern tracks interspersed in the mix from Josi Devil, Danny T & Tradesman who release on our labels Scotch Bonnet & Scrub a Dub. Earl Gateshead began DJing in 1979 when he played Reggae records between punk bands in Brixton......... Today Earl tours the world, always playing original, first press, vinyl, which he maintains has the best sound. He spreads the original positive message of love, from Jamaica’s golden era of Reggae music. Earl has a unique voice on the microphone, his 'Yeah Yeah" Catchphrase has spread right through Reggae music.

Earl's career began in the late 70s, when he built his own Sound System, one of the first built by a European, and installed it at the world famous Dive Bar, in Soho, London, where he established a respected reputation throughout the U.K. Earl had a 23 year residency at The Dive Bar, sadly brought to an end in 2002 when the venue was closed, after the lease ran out. Throughout the later part of his Dive Bar years Earl became the Saturday night resident at clubs such as the internationally acclaimed Blue Note and later Fabric, where he became their resident Roots Reggae specialist.

In 2000 Earl began to organise and perform at a series of events called “Reggae Nights” at seminal London club "Plastic People." This legendary series of concerts received world wide attention, with performances from international legends such as; Alton Ellis, Dennis Alcapone, Sugar Minott, Cutty Ranks, Adrian Sherwood and Saxon Sound System. This run of great success gave Earl a huge boost in profile, leading him to be one of the most sought after DJs in the world. In high demand from international Reggae artists. He went on to tour Europe and Australasia with Big Youth, Dr Alimantado and Cutty Ranks amongst others.

Earl was the first Reggae DJ to play at Fabric, The Ministry Of Sound and Space in Ibiza. Probably the world's three greatest nightclubs.

World renowned graffiti artist Banksy asked Earl to D.J at the first three exhibitions of his work. Earl is still the only D.J that Banksy has ever worked with.

With such a distinguished career and fantastic attitude, Earl has become a figurehead in UK Reggae. He was invited to lecture at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in Sao Paulo. Earl gave a comprehensive lecture on Reggae DJing and recorded a radio show for Red Bull....... In April this year Red Bull invited Earl to play with Red Bull Culture Clash winners Rebel Sound on the London leg of their U.K tour.
