Finishing 2023 on another stratospheric high, GMJ & Matter return to their ever-rising imprint with a twin-track EP of rare quality as they end the year with “Stellaris / Idtritah”.

Over a year that saw a collection of releases cement their reputation in the rarefied atmosphere of the Progressive House movement’s leading lights, GMJ & Matter have seen music featured on Cid Inc.’s Replug, Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Alex O’Rion’s newly minted Solis Records throughout 2023. Add to that a set of performances across their native Australia, Europe, and culminating in a spell-binding sold-out label showcase at Amsterdam’s Akhnaton as ADE hit the city for the dance industry’s annual shindig, and it’s not difficult to understand why the Melbourne-based duo are such hot properties.

As label bosses, the duo have overseen the meteoric rise of their Meanwhile imprint since its debut in early 2020. A regular fixture in the Beatport Progressive House Top 10 charts, Meanwhile has been the purveyor of outstanding underground dance music with a roster of artists including Jamie Stevens, Alex O’Rion and Simos Tagias. Now returning to their label with another pair of original offerings, “Stellaris” is a gorgeous free-flowing offering that immediately hits its stride with powerful beat, percussive intrigue and hallmark hi-hat urgency. Full of depth and delight, a sub-bassline hypnotises before an immaculately cadenced synth motif is woven into the rhythmic foundation with the precision of a master seamstress. A flowing and atmospheric new melody adds depth at the breakdown and continues into the head-shaking third movement accompanied by an array of white-noise risers. The result is another instant GMJ & Matter classic.

Continuing the deep, driving narrative of its partner track, “Idtritah” mesmerises with an immaculately constructed groove of rolling top-line hats and percussion, while a staccato bassline adds further gravitas. A cascading combination of melodies trip across each other with ease as a warm blanket of melodic flow and smooth delays envelops the listener, culminating a beautifully textured and ethereal mid-point break. A new plucked phrasing enters the fray in the second half to magical effect with the addition of subtle vocal textures and exquisitely placed effects creating another superb track that sits perfectly within the GMJ & Matter canon.

Ending the year as they began, GMJ & Matter shoot for the stars once more with “Stellaris / Idtritah”.

Returning to Meanwhile with a full debut EP, Zankee Gulati continues his journey as a rising progressive house talent with the “Mind Opener / Magnetic Island” EP. A single remix comes from Argentinean duo, Analog Jungs.

A recognised force in his Sydney hometown, Zankee Gulati has continued to see his star shine increasingly bright within the underground dance firmament. An artist and promoter renowned for his spellbinding sets across Sydney’s clubs and for bringing the likes of Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and Ben Bohmer to New South Wales, the Australian’s performance in the studio has only cemented a rapidly growing reputation. A mounting catalogue of sumptuous offerings has increasingly featured on the likes of Sudbeat Music, The Soundgarden and Balance Music, plus a standout contribution to John Digweed’s “Futuro” compilation on Bedrock, with “Low Tide” in collaboration with fellow countryman, Jamie Stevens. Two appearances on GMJ & Matter’s imprints in December 2022 saw “The Magic Spoon” feature on “Beyond The Horizon, Vol. 2”, while “HereAfter” found its way onto the flagship label’s, “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 3” in July 2023.

Now hitting the heights once more, the light and airy tones of “Mind Opener” reveal themselves over a strong kick and ticking percussive top-line. Rippling arps and a strong motif keep the energy high as analogue edge gradually develops within the latter with an open filter creates a range of harmonic frequencies that shine over a beatless breakdown. Dropping back into the hefty rhythmic groove, the track then draws to its meticulously sculpted conclusion. “Magnetic Island” is a deep, chugging powerhouse. Full of rhythmic prowess and building elegantly through thumping kick and shaker-driven groove, a beautiful melodic passage develops within a hypnotic arp that filters to a powerful denouement in the final stages. The strong rhythmic narrative of its predecessor then finds its place once more in the final stages.

A single remix comes from Argentinean duo, Analog Jungs, who first came to Meanwhile prominence on their 3-track “Surrender” EP in March 2022. Already regulars on blue-chip labels that include Mango Alley, Hope Recordings and Manual Music, the Córdoba-based pair excel once more with a chunky interpretation that creates a trademark rhythmic foundation and driving bassline groove. Adding tropes from Zankee Gulati’s original, they turn “Mind Opener” into an exciting and dynamic new track that is redolent in additional production material and melodic invention. The result is a powerful remix that is an exceptional addition to the EP.

We welcome the magnificent Gai Barone back to Bonzai Progressive with the superb Flash, which is backed up by a solid remix from Cherry. Gai continues to churn out top quality cuts on various labels and, he is a firm favourite here at BP as his brand of deep, flowing progressive house and trance sits comfortably on the legendary label. His last outing for us - Myonic – was very well received indeed, not to mention his eclectic 2 part In The Mix 006 which also gained a physical release. As well as travelling the world, alluring his fans, his radioshow Patterns is listened to religiously by a worldwide fan base and he is held in very high regard by his peers, with many citing him as an inspiration to produce their own music. Always a pleasure to have this guy around.

The Original Mix opens up into a cosmic world filled with a rolling synth line and pulsing basses. A nice chunky kick drum leads the drums while subtle percussions start to build into a steady flowing rhythm. Hypnotic arpeggios cascade through the groove, lacing the track with sweet melodies. The multi-layered basses add warmth and depth as infectious scathing synths with a retro twist join in. Such a gem of track that flows effortlessly and a solid slice of progressive goodness that will definitely keep the party rocking.

Cherry aka Ukraine based DJ and producer Oleh Cherkes returns on remix duties and once again he delivers the goods in style. No stranger to the scene, Oleh has several releases on various labels and his music enjoys a lot of support from across the board. His first two efforts for us titled Mnong and Alma gained great support as dis his remix on Iga Dep’s Phobia. He is also known for his dynamic, building sets that always pleases the crowd. Great to have him on board here at BP and we hope to see much more soon. On the remix here, we get thrust into a full-on progressive mover thanks to a tight drum section and bright flowing arpeggios. A beefy bassline rolls beautifully through the groove, luring you to the floor while superb melodic percussions and airy pads add an extra layer of progressive bliss. An exceptional cut and a definite must have for the more upbeat party.
