Ears Have Ears features weekly exclusive contributions by experimental artists in the form of either an imaginary soundtrack, mixtape, live recording, in-studio performance or interview. This is a collection of content contributed to Ears Have Ears during 2017.

Ears Have Ears 2017

Over the last two years, The Black Dog have photographed their home town and the brutal architecture that sits within. This album of ambient, experimental and down-tempo work was originally conceived as an aid for the creative process but ultimately provides a soundtrack to the artworks.

We've always worked apart. For us, it's nothing new. Large online servers have been in place for years but at some stage, we always meet up while working on an album to pour over the details, tone and running order.

We create storyboards and write text to support and form the ideas. However, this process and the simple ability to sit in the same room just wasn’t possible during the pandemic. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, on this project we believe that it has helped us to capture the isolation a photographer seeks with their subject. It's an attempt at slowing down and finding something internal. When the chatter stops, the creative intentions seep through.

Music For Photographers was first created as a functional tool. For the last two years, we’ve been photographing our city and the brutal architecture that sits within the landscape. Throughout this process many mistakes had been made, resulting in many return visits to repeat work already undertaken. Rushing, aimlessly collecting and near misses are all common problems. Photography, just like any other artform, needs to be practised and the skills need to be attained. Like music, it’s a constant battle.

Something was needed to aid the art being sought.

We created Music For Photographers with two simple rules; to be void of human voices and that it should be played in full when visiting any location. Our approach to composing the music and visiting the locations evolved. It helped the whole process become a more fluid exchange of ideas and we repeated the process later while editing the photographs. The book "Brutal Sheffield" provided a full stop for the creative process, finding that perfect balance between function and form.

Music For Photographers has now become a fully functioning sigil in our creative process. Rather than just invoking, it also evokes and goes beyond being a simple function. Listen carefully and you can hear the bréton brut!

Laura Hunt is a Sydney based musician and artist. Hunt has played with bands Ghastly Spats and Drown Under; releasing multiple cassettes and records with Australian labels R.I.P Society, Exxe Records, Paradise Daily, Heinous Anus, and Special Awards. Hunt collaborates with Jannah Quill in dance noise project WDK. She recently completed a 3 month residency at International Cite des Arts in Paris and is currently on tour with WDK in New Zealand. 

"‘He Told Me I'd Never Look Rich’ is a dance noise, beat heavy soundtrack. The track was formed using amplification of electromagnetic frequencies, drum machine and synthesizers over cracked ASMR, paper shuffling, brain hacking audio, heaving breath and half formed vocal samples. It was created with the intention to conjure a coagulated world, influenced by the spaces between desire, corporate culture and primal urges." - Laura Hunt

EHE 31.08.17 Laura Hunt - He Told Me I'd Never Look Rich

This week our feature soundtrack contribution comes from Shoshana Rosenberg, a bass clarinetist, composer and experimental musician, currently based in Adelaide.

Her practice champions the uniqueness and complexity produced by untrained musicianship and unpredictable sound sources. This includes her own lack of formal training, as well as her use of electronics and improvisation. Through her sounds and records she attempts to navigate and explore her relationship with God, gender, sexuality and mental illness. 

On her soundtrack: 

"Kibbush Nitzkhi (Eternal Occupation), for bass clarinet, gated reverb and Trogotronics. This soundtrack is inspired by Shoshana's experiences of growing up in Occupied Palestine aka Israel. In particular, the track focuses on the process of making sense of having one's body and identity inextricably linked with a history of forced settlement, displacement and murder. The track pits the bass clarinet against jarring electronics, forcing each to imitate the other and integrate. Whether the outcome is a success or a failure is up to the listener to decide." - Shoshana Rosenberg

EHE 28.09.17 Shoshana Rosenberg - Kibbush Nitzkhi (Eternal Occupation)

This week our feature piece is by Berlin's legendary composer and musician Rashad Becker. 
 
Rashad Becker's compositions commonly explore multilayered narratives populated by an ensemble of sonic entities. You may be familiar with his Traditional Music Of Notional Species works, which were released across two volumes on pan_hq. Rashad is a mastering guru at Berlin’s famous Dubplates & Mastering and has mastered many of the releases we have played on our show over the last six years. He has also collaborated with the likes of Eli Keszler, Moritz von Oswald, Okkyung Lee, Andre Vida, Ashley Paul and Valerio Tricoli, just to name a few. 
 
More recently Rashard developed a new cycle of works called Based on a True Story. These works seek to generate scores from historical occurrences and processes that have had a significant impact on recent social history. Rashad has contributed a new chapter of this series to Ears Have Ears. Based on a True Story - Chapter G (Part 5) is a musical documentary with an associative score. This multi-art piece specifically references Sendero Luminoso of Peru and the life of Abimael Guzmán between 1982 and 1992. 

In his own words, Rashad describes it as referencing"the brute implications of revolutionary dialectics and the challenges these carry to the modernist economy of emotions and individual entitlement…..the confrontation and transcendence of the individual pursuit of happiness."

EHE 05.10.17 Rashad Becker (GER) - Based On A True Story - Chapter G (Part 5)

This is the second collaborative soundtrack from Shane and James created for Ears Have Ears, the previous being 'Her Golden Threads Burned for The Birth of Daylight'. The work was put together over a stay at Shane’s place in northern NSW and combines studio, home and field recordings to create it’s varied sound worlds. Like their previous soundtrack it combines the two’s complementary skills across composition, sound treatment and synthesis.

EHE 30.11.17 Shane & James - Journey Towards Death

Richard Chartier's Pinkcourtesyphone is an emotionally grounded project that presents a more musical side of his artist work. Dark but not arch with a slight hint of humor, the project is amorphous, changing, and slipping in and out of consciousness. Operating like a syrup-y dream, this sounds strives to be both elegant and detached.

Beyond Pinkcourtesyphone, Richard Chartier is considered one of the key figures in minimalist sound art. Chartier’s works explore the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, perception, and the act of listening itself.

Gas is the sometimes solo project of Sydney based artist and musician Del Lumanta. They coordinate 'Double Vision', a series of free-form gigs showcasing the practice of DIY, sound and other musicians and facilitate the program 'All Girl Electronic' at Information and Cultural Exchange, Parramatta. Their other music projects include Video Ezy (Paradise Daily), Skyline (Nice Music) and Basic Human. 

Diaspora Labyrinth is a collection of songs from musicians with alternate histories: Elysia Crampton (us), Various Asses (melb), Papaphilia (melb), Gas (syd) and poet Eunice Andrada (syd). Placing these songs in conversation hopes to generate narratives that bring identity into focus while simultaneously contemplating erasure and survival.

Circle Of Live is a brand new, live act only event series concept and record label curated by Sebastian Mullaert to honour the values of spontaneity and improvisation. 

For the inaugural release on the new Circle Of Live imprint, Sebastian Mullaert presents a joint EP with long time collaborator Eitan Reiter. The duo previously met on the 2014 album ‘Reflections of Nothingness’, (Mule Musiq) borne out of a week long jam spent together at Sebastian’s tranquil Röstånga studio. Following the album’s release, they arranged two live shows at Ozora festival in Hungary. 

For the first year the collaboration was mostly based on Sebastian's music with Eitan adding jams on top. For the second year, Eitan felt inspired to set up a more improvised live set, enabling a more spontaneous performance. Then, unexpectedly, Sebastian lost all his gear on the flight and the live show took a completely different turn. This time, the show relied more on Eitan’s music, with Sebastian jamming on top. Eitan had prepared simple sketches to jam around, similar to the way in which Sebastian plays. One of the sketches, "Loop for Today", later became one song on Eitan’s album called ”Give it Life”. Eitan asked Sebastian to remix this song. 

Sebastian accepted the remix invitation with the request to continue honoring improvisation and creativity, but instead of a normal remix it became an adventure out to the Dead Sea after Sebastian's gig at the Block Festival 2017. Eitan invited Ben Kirschenbaum to take care of the cameras and two more friends to carry gear and PA. As a result, the remix is an on the spot jam out in the desert … one take while the sun is going down. No time to think or plan, only the option to surrender to the situation and let creativity run its course. This is the ethos of Circle of Live in general, regardless of whether the expression is happening on stage or in the studio. Let it happen! Let it Be! Feel it. 

Back in the dense Swedish woodland, Sebastian made two more remixes under his Wa Wu We moniker. For the ‘Live In The Woods’ remix he restructures the expansive synthwork of the original in enclosed surroundings, whilst the ’Live By The Clouds’ interpretation looks upwards for a disorienting, dubbed out trip. 

” The main intention with Circle of Live is to inspire people to improvise; let their life be an improvisation; a spontaneous expression of life. In one perspective this is a concept with clear visions and definitions but at the same time the core aim of the project is to allow both us, the artists, and the audience to drop concepts and habitual patterns in the creative process of dance and music." 

Artists confirmed to take part in this inspiring new adventure are Ame (Live), Aurora Halal, Dorisburg, Eitan Reiter, Johanna Knutsson, Leafar Legov, Ljudbilden & Piloten, Mathew Jonson, Neel, Steevio & SuzyBee, Tobias. and The Mole. The Circle Of Live imprint will release spontaneous live jams from those participating.

Scannt, hailing from Prague, is a day-dreamer captivated by the realm of sound. Marek has been active in the scene since 2009 and went through a few different genres before finally settling down somewhere between dub techno and ambient - doing his best to find a new path here and there when composing, avoiding the standard structures. In 2019 he released his first vinyl titled “Planets” on Come In Records (@cir000), you can also find his previous EPs and singles on labels such as @d-m-t-records, @harmony-rec or @xionlabel / @anskrmelec. 
He took the picture at the Great Wall, two years ago.
