Having changed the electronic landscape with his central role as part of Throbbing Gristle (@industrial-records), X-TG, Chris & Cosey, Carter Tutti, Carter Tutti Void to name but a few of his projects. Chemistry Lessons Volume 1 shows that even after all these years his thirst and endless quest to craft innovative, mind-blowing electronic music shows no sign of slowing down.

This week our feature contribution is an exclusive mix by Gacha Bakradze, an electronic producer based in Tbilisi, Georgia. A stalwart in the Georgian electronic scene, Gacha Bakradze’s music is rich, dynamic, distinct and seductive. Earlier this year he grabbed our attention with a fascinating album of rave breaks, electro and choral synth arrangements called Word Colour (Lapsus Records). He has also released through Cin Cin and Apollo.

Music for Lunch Breaks is a dreamy mix incorporating songs he has composed specifically for “home listening”…or while you’re on your lunch break!

Following on from several self-releases, along with 2018’s soundtrack for Make, Do Theatre’s Little Change, we’re excited to welcome Loui Binns’ Foetal Zulu into the Rural Colours fold.

Redolent, Lo-fi and warm, Tracts was created using only samples from a set of Bible audiobook cassettes that had been found on a wall in Halifax by Loui’s housemate a few years ago.  Using recordings made directly from the cassettes, as well as field recordings of the cassettes and cases themselves being hit on objects, and the occasional voice of confused passers-by, the EP places these found objects front and centre of the music, almost becoming religious icons in their own right. 

Despite the self-imposed limitations of the EP, Tracts is a rich and varied collection of pieces, combining ambient and soundscape composition with more classic electronic dance music elements.

This quote from the composer of Peter Gunn, The Pink Panther, and Breakfast at Tiffany's seems to speak of the power of music and the bleakness of humanity, however while listening to The Blues and the Beat I feel as though I've entered into a lounge frequented by only the most dashing 60's era spies.  There is a great rendition of "Misty" on side one and, whenever you hear the piano, know that it is the one and only John "Little Johnny Love" Williams, the prolific composer of blockbuster film scores!

An improvisation made in my studio in April 2020 on the modular synth. It is largely based on ethnographic cylinder recordings from the Kodaly archive, made in April 1914. These small fragments are sampled with oscillators controlling the grain, loop size and time points of the samples. Pitch and envelope followers on the samples in turn control these oscillators and other physically modelled sounds. Yannis Kyriakides, Amsterdam, April 2020.

Derek Baron is a New York based artist whose quotidian and diaristic work quietly fizzes with creative energy.  With field recordings, text-based works, chamber ensemble works, solo piano works and various other techniques, their deft hand has scribed a compelling set of both stripped-back and collage-based releases on the likes of Penultimate Press, Recital, Regional Bears and their own label 'Reading Group'. For this new release they’ve treated us to a series of musical vignettes; uncovered fragments of memories and offering us tiny glimpses into their personal world. Tender, haunting and beguiling - these works burrow deep.

"Fourteen Latches of Heaven and Earth is a collection of fragments from the last decade or so of my thinking about harmony and performance. "J&C" was a collaboration with V Haddad; "Herr Gott, dich loben wir" was recorded with Dominic Frigo. "Choral Arrival" is a group learning of the Franciscan Salve Regina, sung at the co-incidence festival in Boston in January 2019. Sammie Ray Vaughan is probably the most unknown blues guitar player out there, really doesn't like to boast and show off, never plays a solo, keeps to himself. A model of modesty really. So little is known about him except for the occasional leaked recording...

So when he approached  me to perform a duet, I was a bit hesitant, you know, I'm like an ambient wanker and used to long form, erm, formless stuff. In this outfit I'm called The Exponential Trouble, and it's what I do, I add shit up until it messes the whole thing. 

Not sure we're ever gonna play together again, he's so elusive, Nevertheless, it was a fun session and here's a testament to it.
