Then She Reaches for the Gun was formed in 2021 by Mat Ward. At its essence is sound collage, Ward invites musicians, sound artists, poets and anyone interested to send him files to be used, abused and showcased ‘as suggested by the work’. They are not always musical but field recordings, spoken word, engine noises and drunken rants. Animals participate a lot too! The raw material is arranged with one phrase asking for the next in an alchemical and intuitive process that will most often feature dozens of tracks weaving in and out of each other, colliding, harmonising, arguing and laughing along the way.

Both the aesthetic and the compositional methods use what Frank Zappa called Xenochrony - the mixing together of separately recorded and rhythmically opposing musical phrases to create polyrhythmic and polytempi compositions.The work also features fragmented story telling with the human voice (in many languages) appearing unannounced throughout the tracks offering up snippets of thoughts, conversations, jokes and existential angst. The absurdity of humanities desperate claim to have any real understanding of its place in the universe is revealed through the recorded follies and genuine emotions of the artists. The project is a celebration of chance, diversity and community. It pays homage to all musical tastes and genres whilst maintaining a sense of humour and irreverence that is needed to stay sane in the climate of 21st Century contemporary culture.

A propos des Anecdotes polyédriques :

Comme son nom l'indique plus ou moins directement, cet album est un ensemble d'anecdotes sonores à géométrie variable, une suite d'anecdotes agglutinées les unes aux autres pour former des histoires vraisemblablement plausibles.
Anecdote de trente secondes ou anecdote de deux minutes, elle doit trouver sa place dans la trame intemporelle de l'histoire en devenir (je dis intemporelle car la rigueur métrique et métronomique n'a pas sa place ici), et surtout donner à entendre une sorte de cohérence dans le collage sonore.
Décrire toutes ces infimes anecdotes reviendrait à faire un inventaire à la Prévert, et, vu le temps magnifique, je n'ai pas le désir de le faire, la promenade me tentant plus que tout état des lieux phonique.

De retour de vadrouille, je reviens à mes anecdotes qui, pour simplifier à l'extrême, sont forgées de sons de percussions et des bruits d'un piano disloqué (oui, de bruits, car l'état de l'instrument déglingué ne permet plus la restitution de sons harmonieux; ça ne me dérange pas, j'aime bien les bruits).
Pour s'extraire de la schématisation extrême susnommée, on trouve aussi des anecdotes électroniques saupoudrées de voix improbables, et des anecdotes humides de par leur nature "field recordings" (ou "enregistrements de terrain", mais ça sonne moins bien).
Le plus délicat, et c'est là qu'intervient la glu, a été de transformer cette accumulation de sons hétérogènes en un polyèdre gracieux découpé en six anecdotes substantielles.
Mais, n'hésitons pas une seconde à effacer ce texte anecdotique pour nous concentrer plutôt sur ces sons et la musique en résultant, de préférence avec un casque audio de bonne qualité.

A l'occasion des 40 ans de la disparition d'Orson Welles le 10 octobre 1985, la Cinémathèque Française rend à nouveau un hommage appuyé au génie du cinéma, à travers une exposition "Pantagruélique", en oubliant  cependant et curieusement l’importance essentielle de son oeuvre radio, pourtant unanimement reconnue… C'est l’occasion de rappeler que phonurgia nova n’a pas attendu 40 ans pour rendre hommage à l’immense talent de l’auteur de Citizen Kane, en publiant en coffrets CD + livres bilingues, préfacés par l’historien  du cinéma François Thomas, plusieurs de ses titres-phares, les premiers, les plus époustouflants, ceux qu’il signe à 25 ans,  dont  bien entendu La Guerre des mondes, mais aussi Dracula, L’ile au trésor et Rebecca. Ces ouvrages sont hélas tous épuisés. A l'exception du livre + CD de Rebecca adapté du roman de Daphné du Maurier, avec Margaret Sullavan dans le rôle titre… mais aussi de La Guerre des mondes, dans une édition K7 + livre (avec traduction intégrale du scénario). A défaut de pouvoir découvrir les 156 productions radiophoniques d’Orson Welles dans l’actuelle exposition de la Cinémathèque française, on pourra ré-entendre  depuis son site (https://www.cinematheque.fr/my-name-is-orson-welles.html), la brillante conférence que l’historien du cinéma et critique François Thomas consacra à son œuvre radiophonique prolifique, encore largement inexplorée.
