“Georgia on My Mind” was composed in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell. Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy’s sister, Georgia Carmichael. However, the lyrics of the song are ambiguous enough to refer either to the state or to a woman named “Georgia”. The song was first recorded on September 15, 1930 in New York by Hoagy Carmichael and His Orchestra with Bix Beiderbecke on muted cornet and Hoagy Carmichael on vocals. Ray Charles, a native of Georgia, recorded it in 1960 on the album “The Genius Hits the Road”. It became Georgia’s state song in 1979. The song has subsequently been covered by many artists, significant among them: Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Glenn Miller, Willie Nelson, Ella Fitzgerald, Jo Stafford, Grover Washington, Jr., Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery.

“Tenderly” was composed by Walter Gross and Jack Lawrence. In the early 1940’s pianist Walter Gross wrote a tune, known informally as “Walter’s Melody,” that he played for friends and at club dates. One of Gross’ friends, singer Margaret Whiting, introduced the pianist to lyricist Jack Lawrence who, in turn, wrote lyrics for the tune. Gross initially objected to “Tenderly” for the title, arguing that it sounded like direction for a performer, but he eventually came around. In 1947, Sarah Vaughan recorded “Tenderly,” and she is credited with bringing “Tenderly” into the world of jazz. “Tenderly” has been recorded by many artists including: Nat King Cole, Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, Louis Armstrong, Chet Atkins, Rosemary Clooney, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Jackie Gleason, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra.

“I’ll Be Seeing You” was composed by Sammy Fain and Irving Kahal. Published in 1938, the song was inserted into the Broadway musical Right This Way, which closed after fifteen performances. Much has been said about the resemblance between the tune’s first four lines and a passage within the theme of the last movement of Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony. It was re-introduced in the 1944 movie also titled I’ll be Seeing You, starring Ginger Rogers and Joseph Cotton. The emotional power of the song’s theme, and its powerful lyrics became an anthem for those serving overseas, during World War II. The recording performed by Bing Crosby became a number one hit that year.

“Stardust” was composed in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael on an old upright piano, and first recorded by Carmichael with Emil Seidel and his Orchestra and the Dorsey brothers as “Hoagy Carmichael and His Pals”. Carmichael said that he was inspired by the types of improvisations made by Bix Beiderbecke. The tune at first attracted only moderate attention, mostly from fellow musicians. Mitchell Parish wrote lyrics for the song, based on his own and Carmichael’s ideas. Bing Crosby released a version in 1931 and by the following year over two dozens bands had recorded “Stardust”. It was then covered by almost every prominent band of that era. Versions have been recorded by Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Harry Connick Jr, Ella Fitzgerald, Django Reinhardt, John Coltrane, Willie Nelson, and countless others. It is perhaps the most recorded song of the 20th century, with over 1,500 total recordings.
