Sazbush as a instrument, was a big success in the traditional Turkish parties of the 40’s. For the gypsy musicians who played in huge weddings, it was perfect as the oud and the saz always disappear in big spaces, especially when played with loud instruments such as trumpets drums and so. For them, the cumbus saz was just the perfect solution. Original Turkish Cumbus long neck saz (sazbush) from the maker Zeynel Abidin Cumbus. The highlight of the cumbus saz, is a aluminium or copper bowl, that skin is stretched over it; quite similar to the american banjo. The cumbus saz is tuned like standard saz, but can be tuned to many other alternative tuning such as C-G-C tar wise.

The Azerbaijani saz is long necked lute and mainly used by Ashiqs. The art of Azerbaijani Ashiqs combines poetry, storytelling, dance and vocal and instrumental music into a traditional performance art. The Azerbaijani saz, generally measures about 110 cm, although there are also other types being played measuring between 70 and 130 cm. The carvel-built bowl is mostly made of mulberry, covered with a soundboard fitted with a pattern of about twenty small sound-holes, and an attached thick neck made of walnut. Sometimes the neck is made hollow and covered with a fretboard. The nine strings of the Azerbaijani saz are grouped in 3 triple courses of steel strings of which the middle course often consists of 2 strings. High-tone and accompaniment strings have a permanent tune, while the tune of bass strings changes according to mode-harmony of composition. The origin of the word ney dates back many years and the most primitive form of the ney instrument was first used in history in the Sumerian society. The first neyzen known is Mevlâna J. Rûmî. In the 18th century Istanbul, the majority of the players were Mevlevi dervishes. Dervishes also taught their pupils how to play ney, thus neyzens have been raised in lineages throughout the centuries. So, let the soothing sounds will caress your soul!

The zurna is a Turkish folk instrument. It was the first melody instrument of the Mehter teams in the Ottoman period. It has been played outdoors, during weddings and public celebrations. It has also been used to gather crowds. It is a double-reed woodwind instrument with a bright, high-frequency sound. It is often played with the davul (Turkish bass drum) and is used in traditional weddings. Zurna is made from one piece of wood with one thumb-hole and up to eight finger-holes. Seven holes on the front and one thumb hole provide a range of over one octave. The most common way to play the zurna is to blow into the reed while inhaling through your nose.

The word kaval is probably a derivative from the word "kav" which means hollow on the inside. The cumbush is a Turkish stringed instrument of relatively modern origin. It was developed in 1930 by Zeynel Abidin Cumbush (1881-1947) as an fretless oud-like instrument that could be heard as part of a larger ensemble. It is shaped like an American banjo, with a spun-aluminum resonator bowl and skin soundboard. Although originally configured as an oud, the instrument has been converted to other instruments by attaching a different set of neck and strings.

“Qanun” is a member of the stringed instruments and has the form of a trapezoid-shape, the shape serves the purpose of adjusting the length of the strings. The strings of qanun are plucked by a ring-shaped plectrum placed on the index fingers. On the left side, there are pegs also known as “burgu” which are used to tune the instrument. The Turkish qanun consists of 24, 25 or 26 sets of strings of two or three strings each (generally giving a total of 75) also features special metallic levers called “mandal” on the left side. This features was not present until the 1870s. On a contemporary Turkish qanun, there are six to fifteen mandals for every three strings that the performer can alter quickly when playing. On the right end of the instrument, the strings are stretched over the bridge called “eşik” made of lamb or fish skin. The instrument is played on the lap while sitting by plucking the strings with two picks –one for each hand- made of tortoise shell. It is a unique instrument with a bright timbre, a wide range of sound colors and pitches. It is actually known as the loudest plucked string Turkish instrument; therefore, it can easily mask the sounds of other instruments in the ensemble. Qanun is like the queen of Turkish art music and it is essentially used in art music and fasil ensembles in Turkey.

“Tutek” is a woodwind type Azerbaijani folk instrument, typically made of plum, ebony, or apricot wood. It has seven holes on the front and a thumb hole on the back; the lowest hole on the front is seldom, if ever, covered while playing. Similar to a penny whistle, the register can be controlled by the force of breath and it produces a high pitched whistling sound also it has a pleasant, soft timbre. Various types of tutek are spread throughout many countries. Both large and small versions of this instrument are used in Azerbaijan, mainly as solo instruments in ensembles and orchestras of national instruments.

We are proud to announce “Turkish Baglama” a collection of traditional baglama melodies that have been professionally played by exceptional musicians to reflect its unique and characteristic sounds.

“Baglama” is the most commonly used string folk instrument in Turkey. It takes different names according to the regions and according to its size. It has three main parts called Tekne, Gogus and Sap. Tekne part is generally made from mulberry trees as well as from woods of juniper, beech, spruce or walnut. The gogus part is made from spruce and the sap section from homespun or juniper. There are pieces called burgu (screw) at the end of the sap which is opposite to tekne part to which the strings are tied. These screws are used for tuning. There are pitches on the sap tied with fish line. This instrument is played with a Mizrap or Tezene made from cherry wood bark or plastic and fingers are used in some regions. The later technique is called Selpe. If a single instrument were to represent Turkish folk music it would have to be the baglama cause it is used to express both joyful and sad emotions by the Turkish folk throughout the history.

“Tar” is a Turkish folk instrument played with a plectrum (tezene) also a commonly used instrument in Azerbaijan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Georgia. Its body is composed of two bowls of different size and is generally made from mulberry trees. The gögüs section is covered with a membrane taken from the heart of water buffaloes or cattle. Sap section is from hard wood and fish line pitches are tied onto it. There are two main groups of strings on tar. Those in the first group are used in playing the tune and consists of three groups of two strings. The other group of strings are called Kök and Zengi and are tuned according to the mode to be used and enhance the tone.

“Zurna” is a Turkish folk instrument of the wind type. It was the first melody instrument of the Mehter teams in the Ottoman period. It has historically been played outdoors, during festive events such as weddings and public celebrations. It has also been used to gather crowds in order to make official announcements. It is a double-reed woodwind instrument which has a very bright, high frequency sound; it is almost inseparable with davul (Turkish bass drum) and it is thought that they constitute a good ensemble for traditional weddings. Zurna is constructed from one piece of wood, had one thumb-hole and up to eight finger-holes. Seven holes on the front, and one thumb hole, provide a range of over one octave including some transposition. The most common zurna playing technique is the continuous playing technique where while the air collected in the cave of the mouth is blown out from the reed, inhaling through nostrils occurs simultaneously.
