E2E: Tell us about some of the nostalgic memories, environments or experiences you had when you were growing up, discovering your taste in music? 

Taking the 50min bus trip to the city (Bergen) over the bridge from the island Sotra and through the tiny village I grew up in, listening to radio-tapes or my own mixes from the night before. Speeding through the forest highways with a fresh drivers-license listening to CDs from Bergen Music Library. Hearing music from sitting on the curb outside the nightclubs I was too young to get into. Going to the record store Nøstekollektivet after school. Hearing the "Indisco" track seeping through the door from the neighbour apartment (who made it) of the other apartment I went to buy imported Montana spray-cans, listening to the first mix-cd I ever purchased (Roy Davis Jr). The train station in Bergen (Where I'd be taking the train to Voss where I moved away from home to go to school when I was 16). Listening to and taping Norwegian FM-radio. Listening to and "taping" (to MiniDisc) Gilles Peterson's "Worldwide" show when I was a student in 2002-2004.. Listening to my friend's tapes and mixes playing basketball or skating in the summer.. and yes.. think that's it, for this one in particular..

E2E: Are you working on any projects or releases you'd like to share? 

Remix 12" of Joan Bibiloni with Sotofett and me just out on Saft Records now. A remix out on Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label out in a few weeks, a remix of Norwegian band Hubbabubbaklubb too + some other remixes in the pipeline.. Just launched my new monthly radio-show called "New Massage" on Refuge Worldwide radio in Berlin. 

The next European Carryall 12" will be out in April.. followed by "Point Breaks / Beach Breaks Vol.2" a few months later. And another European Carryall 12" due in Summer/Autumn. 

I think the coming times will be an outlet for everything I've been doing in this weird vacuum-year 🤓✌️

Gene Tellem is a Montreal based DJ and radio host whose taste we have come to love. Her sound is low slung and dusty, and fruitfully embodies a vibe that can often be hard to pull off without becoming too 'deep' and monotonous. Palo Santo is a master of anything obscure + made close to the equator. 

Hailing from Hertogenbosch in the south of Holland, Palo regularly crosses oceans to plunder through shelves of disowned records in unsuspecting places. His bag is diverse and at any one minute may contain oddball Brazilian crooners, Turkish Anatolian Psych, 60's Jamaican Soul or African moog virtuosos. 

We asked him to make a mix primarily containing reggae and he has delivered beyond our expectations. Take a listen.

Montreal based DJ & producer Unknown Mobile first pricked our ears with his bubbly, natured infused house music for labels like Normals Welcome and ASL Singles Club. His sound tends to favour mellow mirages over upbeat bangers, however this mix draws from both sides of the table. In his own words, “this mix is for an evening alone, for no one to see, while you clean and sweep your apartment, grooving and moving to the beat”.

Uchi is an experimental electronic musician and noise artist born in Venezuela and based in Amsterdam. Her sound is both gritty and emotional, emanating a sense of disoriented euphoria while creating space for reflection and rumination. She communicates this sophisticated balance through her DJ sets and hardware driven live sets which have come to life in some of Europes most notable clubs such as Panorama Bar, De School and Lux. 

This mix is an introspective journey perfect for disappearing into your own thoughts while crying tears of appreciation. Enjoy.

Some words from Priori: “I grew up in a working class neighbourhood of Longueuil, Quebec, Canada. Being an only child in the suburbs meant I spent a lot of time daydreaming and contemplating my environment. I was a bit of a melancholic kid so post-punk and ambient music made a lot of sense to me when I discovered them. I stumbled upon an album called Strike by 154 by accident, probably wanting to download something else off of Kazaa. It really changed things for me as a teenager and I still hold it dear. There's a song from it in the mix, along with a bunch of other things that bring up similar feelings for me.”

Alex (Dust-e-1) and I are putting out a new record as ANF on NAFF, should be out April 26th.
Some more collabs and solo things coming out in the summer.”

“Influenced by Melbourne and musical experiences with a group of friends. The image of being above the clouds from flight or mountains always came back to me. I’ve been working on some new music that has a bit more energy than my most recent music but still has the laidback pads and melodies I'm drawn too. These tracks should be out in the coming months.”

E2E:The mix is different from the high energy you’re known for, is there a particular environment or context you had in mind when putting it together?

KM: I wanted to make something different for you as I feel like the mixes on your site tell a story, and this is something I aim to do with my mixes (unless it's a full on club mix where I just want to make people dance). 
A theme, image or idea helps me direct the development of the mix. Sometimes when I am at home and want to relax, I watch train rides from the driver's perspective (my favourite is the Oslo to Bergen video), this has inspired a few of my previous mixes. 

Lately, I've started watching diving and submarine videos. I put on music while I watch the bubbles rise and fish come into focus and try to find something that accompanies these images. So this mix is inspired by that. Plunging underwater, diving deeper and exploring the ocean floor. I'm definitely inspired by artists like Valentino Mora, Dorisburg and basically, anyone who has played at Organik Festival in Taiwan - they have such great bookings. Also, Johanna Knutsson who plays and makes the most beautiful, understated dub techno. 

I'm always impressed by techno DJs who don't feel pressure to play anything too obvious but rather confidently lull the audience into a trance state with layers of lush textures. I'm not really a techno DJ, I usually play anything with breaks, and this mix actually isn't actually so straight-forward either, but it's definitely inspired by that idea and I love staying open to all genres and finding openings to understanding and exploring them.

E2E: Any news or projects you’re working on at the moment?

KM: My partner and I who do the Oscillate events at about blank in Berlin started a label, Oscillate Tracks, last year and our third release with Johanna Knutsson and Karen Gwyer is coming out in August! I'm absolutely in love with all the tracks and can't wait to share them with everyone.

I also just got a studio and have been focussing on production but I'm not in any rush to get anything out, just learning and experimenting at this stage which is really fun.

E2E: Did your move to Melbourne influence the mix? 

A little bit, yes. I have been feeling particularly nostalgic lately and that probably came through in the selections. Last week, I drove from Glebe to Brunswick in a 12 seater bus with my cat Romeo. We listened to this mix together to see how it sounded on the road. Unfortunately, Romeo did not like it and he did not like much that day. 

E2E: Were there any environments or contexts that you had in mind when putting this mix together? 

As the title of your mix series suggests, music can be a wonderful accompaniment to activities. When I have watched a film that has really affected me I’ll often listen to the soundtrack for weeks after and sometimes make my own imaginary soundtrack of songs that fit with the world of the film. While I was reading Cormac McCarthy’s ‘Border Trilogy’, I wanted to find ways to stay in the novel when I wasn’t reading it. The novels are set at the southwest border of the United States and the characters spend a majority of the novels riding on horseback, often alone and usually on a quest to avenge a loss. I found myself preoccupied imagining the sort of music the characters and their horses could be listening to, riding under lonesome skies, contemplating their place in the world. 

I don’t expect that much of your audience owns or has access to a horse. Still, I hope some of them can enjoy these songs on journeys of their own. 

E2E: Any news or projects coming up with Best Effort, Ken Oath Records or Rimbombo?

Nothing is planned on the release front and my bank account implies that maybe it’s time for a bit of a break. Best Effort Dance Parties will continue every few months at Freda’s and I’m looking forward to some summer parties in Sydney with my Rimbombo buds Adi and James at the end of the year.

E2E: Any particular environment or context you had in mind when recording this mix?

Myles Mac: Elaborating on the theme, I've been living down on the Mornington Peninsula for the last year or so which is home to some of Australia's coolest birdlife, recently prompting me and my girlfriend to go buy some binoculars and join the fray as amateur birdwatchers. Just from my place here, you can often see some pretty funky birds like the brightly coloured Eastern Rosellas and Rainbow Lorikeets, and we also get the odd visit from a cheeky Laughing Kookaburra looking for a quick bath. There's even a family of Wedge-tailed Eagles that circle around above. I'm sure one day they'll discover some pretty cool birds in outer space too, and I think this could be a nice soundtrack for all the interplanetary birdwatchers out there.

E2E: Any new projects you're working on or milestones with MDC? 

Myles Mac: MDC is into its 10th year now which is a bit of a trip! Just hope to continue sharing memorable listening journeys from all over the place but would like to focus a bit more on emerging locals as there are some incredible DJs down here that don't always get the recognition they should.

Will also be collaborating on a few tasty club shows with the Slow Burn crew next year which I'm quite excited about.

E2E: What environment or context did you have in mind when recording the mix? 

Greville (@grevillegreville): My favourite place in the world is a little surf town in the south of France called Hossegor that I’ve been going to since I was little. You take the bullet train down from Paris and can’t help but zone into the powerlines whizzing by with a dreamy backdrop of endless sunflower fields and forests.  The power lines start doing a kind of wavey motion which is quite musical. Every time I’m on that train it is very emotive like I’m returning home from a long time away… that feeling and the view goes quite nicely with some music, so this is supposed to be some music for that.

E2E: Upcoming projects you're working on? any new releases on Mad Habitat?

Greville: I have my next release under Greville coming out in January which is an attempt at club music but I’m not very good at making club music so it’s not that clubby. I also have an album from a good friend coming as the fourth release which I am very happy to be involved in. I am also still working on some exciting Rimbombo parties with my special friends Adi and Nik here in Sydney.

E2E: What environment or context did you have in mind when recording the mix? 

Luen (@luenfree): The mix was curated after a 6-hour drive from Sydney to the Snowy Mountains. There was a spookiness to the empty roads and never-ending dry pastures. We wound down the windows to keep us awake, it was exceptionally cold. To me, this mix represents sprawling Australian landscapes, twilight into night. 


E2E: Tell us about the upcoming projects and new releases you're working on?

Luen: Genie Stuart and I are working on TAXX #2 zine, with written contributions from Khotin, Ciel, Andy Rantzen, Louisa Hansel (+ myself and Genie). Crud55, Magic Steven, Charlotte Aldis, Rita Salt and others have contributed art. 
The zine started as a way to talk about pretty gritty life chat and review current or early memories via a plethora of contributors. It will be hitting the stores this side of 2020. 
I’m also working on a new Ep and filming wonky music videos for my last EP with Natalie Synott. Here’s one we prepared earlier - https://youtu.be/FScEMtqQRh0

The biggest project in my everyday life is @teknogarden ‘where the veggies go off’. What I’m looking forward to there are the pumpkins, cucumbers, snake beans and watermelons.

E2E: What environment or context did you have in mind when recording the mix?

I noticed that all the Ear 2 Ear mixes had a particular theme so before I was even asked to contribute to the series, I had a particular theme in mind for it - if I ever got asked to contribute that is. The theme I chose was music for stargazing. Which brings me back memories to some of the most special and spiritual experiences I've had with my closest friends. I wanted to create a mix of music that suited the environment we found ourselves in. A group of us alone, set on a beach with the ocean washing the sand as we lay there staring into the open sky. The stars twinkling as the air sung in the background, all of us in a complete state of relaxation, losing all sense of self, transcending and connecting as one, with each other and with the earth itself.

E2E: Tell us a bit about your new Body Corp alias, have you got any new work coming up?

Body Corp is I guess an outlet for more electronic/dance music that I write. I’m currently working on finishing another 2 EPs mainly and always just working on new tracks, especially during this time while there’s more of it. One of the EPs is a follow up to the first release with Soothsayer and the other is in its early stages and a bit more relaxed, less for the dance floor and more for listening at home. That one is a work in progress so we’ll see where it goes.. シ
