CEM’s unique brand of emotive hysteria was forged in Herrensauna’s hedonistic Berlin furnace in the last few years, and as one of the party’s two core members, he has been at the heart of the operations since its inception. With the party attracting more and more attention for its critical contribution to Berlin’s queer community, as well as their raw italo-metal aesthetic, the opportunity came to move into Tresor, where it has cemented its place as a unique addition to Berlin’s nocturnal topography. CEM’s role in all this is twofold—firstly, as curator of the party’s unique mix of frenetic DJs and industrial-edged live performances; and secondly, as one of the resident DJs. The sheer pace of Herrensauna’s preferred grade of techno is offset by his enigmatic presence and selection. It’s a crucial edge of the party, and it’s rightfully brought CEM to the world’s attention.

MCMLXXXV is perhaps best known as a founding member of Herrensauna - the beloved queer party originating in Berlin - but the influence of his curational work resonates much further afield, encompassing the spheres of music, art and fashion with a sincere appreciation of subcultural movements and their associated aesthetics.
His DJ sets celebrate a countercultural approach to electronic music, drawing upon an intense, seductive fusion of charged rhythmic tension and obscure sonic imagery. With a comprehensive knowledge of genres ranging from EBM and electro to hard trance and industrial, his ability to weave seemingly disparate references together is the result of years spent dedicated to the underground, in all its grit and glamour.

Herrensauna reflects the need for a queer-led techno event in a city where underground and mainstream sit tensely alongside each other, and gentrification threatens the vast network of cultural spaces the city calls its own. Despite its name - a tongue-in-cheek reference to the clandestine culture of gay men’s saunas - it is the sense of community at the parties, which have now travelled the globe, that lend to their ever growing influence across the queer diaspora.

2021 has been an interesting year in the world of Techno as we came out of Lockdown it was quickly back to business.

Things have defiantly got a lot faster, in some cases you can question if it is even Techno anymore. Regardless, the scene seems to be thriving which is great to see. 

This month podcast number 10 I am very happy to bring you someone who has always kept it real, Voicedrone. He needs little introduction, a true legend on the scene, co founder of London’s now notorious and well established club FOLD and also an artist here on ETG. 

As a club owner Voicedrone is a rarity his relentless passion and drive to create something special with FOLD has brought together untold groups and communities from across the UK and beyond. 

First and foremost music always comes first! 

As a producer and Dj he is very capable in both counts. His sets are explosive, dark and move very tightly between styles of Electronica and Techno. Production wise his equal obsession with the sound you hear with FOLD's bespoke Sound System is also demonstrated in the studio.

Coming up in the not too distant future expect to see him up on FOLD Records as well as back on EarToGround alongside myself with remix action from Works Unit AKA Cleric and Reflec

So for this Christmas end of year special here is a brutal LIVE recoding of Voicedrone from the recent Telehaus party at FOLD.

VERTIGO PODCAST 001 - Madalba

After 5 years in the Shanghai local scene where she was involved as a dj, and live performer, Elise Massoni moved to Berlin to focus entirely on her music production. She rapidly got noticed for her subtle blend of broken rhythms and delicate electro which landed her a first EP on Man Band records having her material remixed by Forest Drive West on 2 occasions.  Being one of those wide-ranging selectors unafraid of drastic bpm and genre shifts, masterfully oscillating between fast techno, IDM, acid, and a smattering of ghetto and electro, Elise marked some notable appearances in some of Europe's most renowned clubs & festivals such as Kaiku (Helsinki), Rex Club (Paris), Dimensions and Flow festival. Finally relocating to Paris, Elise started her monthly residency on Rinse France in late 2018 and continues to push her sound forward and signed an opening reshape on François X's Irregular Passion reshape album (2019). In 2020 she composed her first 2 short BO/pieces to accompany artists' performances (cf. Tout ce qui ne tourne pas tombe - Chevalive Corporation, Espace Niemeyer Paris).  Elise has also been part of beautiful compilations such as Grief Into Rage, Mutants Mixtape Vol 3 : SEED and last but not least, (2021) XX LAB first release. 2021 is also the year of a new EP "Straight Is A Lie" coming out on Simo Cell's TEMET record, a 2 track release plus an incredible video by Jack Anderson made hand in hand with Elise (coming out in June 2021).

Starting her journey in the gritty streets of Baltimore, Maedon's experiences have led her through the urban soundscapes of Brooklyn and ultimately to the techno capital of the world, Berlin. Her sound is a reflection of her life's journey, absorbing the influences of the industrial scene and transforming them into her own unique and mystical creations.
