EBR Podcast 060 - Tom2Trax

So we hinted at a new format with the last exquisite outing on podcast no.60 from Tom2Trax and here is the first in that series.

This marks the first in a new bi-monthly roll out for the podcast in which we will be presenting a studio mix from an Ebloc affiliate as well as a live recorded mix from a previous night within our sweaty walls so you are able to relive some of those special moments over and over again.

Dark Red Recordings steps up with the first delivery with 2.5 hours of live recorded material from their night back in March.  With Just over 30 mins a piece we hear everything from Dubstep through to Jungle from Jah-Tek, Glen Cutwerk, SoulStructure, Ego-Free Sequences & Darsk.

This week we're super proud to be presenting something of an Eastern Bloc prodigy, Daz has been a solid part of the shop whether that's as a regular customer, a keen dancer and now performer who's racked up some top flight dates within the venue, and all the time honing his skills as a selector. In a current climate of non descript 90's rehash techno Daz stands out with some substance via the underwater journey that can be dub techno. Beautifully patient with moments of pure energy we can't recommend this one enough. Eastern Bloc presents Daz Macleod's debut studio mix.

EBR Podcast 069 - VIRUN - Live from Eastern Bloc 16.06.23

With a flip to normal listings this week we have our 'Live' Mix being presented 1st for September this month. We proudly present to you 2 of Present Tense's residents Amy Amor & Tim Bob.

We've been lucky enough to have the present tense crew bless the turntables at Eastern Bloc various times now and this recording came from their event with One records affiliate Adam Shelton / A-Future. The first half is provided by Amy Amor where Detroit provides the backbone as well as plenty of deep soul, before Tim Bob supplies the 2nd half with his closing hour, a pacier, tougher vibe perfect for those early hours. Both sets have a real tension to them which takes you back to our beloved sweat den.

We're back with Decembers version of the 'Live' Podcast and it's a bumper edition from Manchester based online radio station 'Disc Break radio' in which we're treated to a 3 hour recording from James Greenwood (1st hour) and scottish trio Look Busy Collective (last 2 hours)

The vibe is high on this one, expect to be slapped about with some seriously bumpy, M1 fuelled goodness that touches on Garage, US house, sleezy tech house, Acid and Breaks.

Scotland's Look Busy Collective (Mike Edwards, Andy Buchan, and Kev Reid) kept the crowd on the dancefloor for a further 2 hours as they delved deep into their collection of underground deep tech house.

A big shout must go to the Eastern Bloc crowd who were proper engaged all night. All the DJs fed off this energy and vice versa. You can hear it in the mix."

EBR Podcast 080 - Steve Conry

For the month of April's 'Live' mix we welcome 2 legends from the dub techno scene that we were super happy to welcome behind the Eastern Bloc Decks.

First up 'Ohm' (bjarnar jonsson) the Icelandic producer who has been heavily involved within the scene for the past 30 years steps up with releases on some of dub techno's biggest hitters including Thule records, Kontakt, Taped Artifact, Vade mecum, Vuo records and AE Recordings which he co-ran with Octal Industries and Thor from Thule Records. A label owner himself his 'Ohm Series' label has been steadily releasing music since 2021.

Alongside him 'Kvadrant' (Johnny Fredsgaard) a Danish producer who was a resident on the legendary TweakFM, and runs one of the most healthy and well respected dub techno labels out there currently- Kontakt records. With past artists including - Substance, Mike Schommer, Grad_U, Ohm, VRIL, JS Zeiter, Luke Hess & Octal Industries.

I'm sure you'll agree it's a beautifully put-together 4 hours of deep washy goodness.

" Myself and Johnny came over to honour an invite from our brothers in Music : Quadrant Soundscape. When we first came the place felt small, a little pub thing, but we felt good, the vibe in there just felt good. The hosts started playing some good tracks, the sound system felt big in such a small place. 

We started and it got packed, in such a way that it felt perfect to play some records for the crowd. I love small clubs with big systems and Eastern Bloc was the real deal. Four hours we played, one record at a time and the mood and vibe just kept building. Lots of happy people listening and dancing, it felt surreal and I would do it over and over again. "

EBR Podcast 085 - Dub Explorations w/ Ohm Vs Kvadrant - Live 02.02.24

This weeks 'Live' Mix comes from Practical, otherwise known as Callum Wilson, who is one of the founders of the 4x4 Deviation night out of Liverpool who we have hosted at the shop on multiple occasions. We were also lucky enough to grab the 'd.phylleia' recording from this peach of the night, so if you haven't listened to it yet go back through the archive and get listening.

Practical takes us through a jacking vibe in comparison, plenty of euphoria filled machine business, raw analogue energy and weighty ear worm basslines, perfect for tickling the lower register of the shop's sound system.

Libertine records, and artists such as DJ Hell & Binh really inspired me ahead of this. I don’t tend to associate with one particular playing style, but I hadn’t played sounds like this out before. It was a really enjoyable challenge to balance my usual deep preferences with this alternative grungy noisy dialogue."

This one's a special one. Long-time shopper Joe Entwistle had not been in the shop for a while and we were starting to wonder where he'd disappeared to. He recently reappeared up the stairs at the shop where we got stuck back into some new records, but unfortunately there was a darker reason for his extended vacation.

After a good catch up it was clear that Joe had a bit of a time of it recently in which he'd potentially lost a good chunk of his collection as well as his full deck/mixer setup due to a leak in his house. Keen to get him back involved in music I suggested he contribute a mix to the podcast and I'm very happy to introduce 'Joey Warcrimes' for an hour and a half of rough and ready rawdog techno.

What's included within the podcast is a peak into Joe's buying habits at ebloc over the years. EBR Podcast 090 - Jumanji

Super excited to introduce this one. After having Wild Forts perform at one of our 'Live Sessions' events we hatched a plan to get him involved in the podcast series and the next 50 minutes is the result of a fresh Hardware set recorded just for us.

"What I love most about performing/recording hardware live sets is the fluidity of each set and how the songs develop or change with each performance - I reckon there is a about a 70/30 split between knowing what I am going to do and improvising. This recording was especially fun as I wrote a couple of new tunes for it which haven't been heard before and can be found in the first 10 minutes. I'm really happy with this recording as I captured one of my best performances, whilst managing to strike the right balance in the arrangement , for club ready tunes to be listened to at home"

EBR Podcast 094 - Wild Forts (Live Hardware Set)

We go back to the 8th of June for the latest 'Live' rendition of the podcast and also feature another live set which came courtesy of an Irish export living in Berlin for one of the 'sparkling water dreams presents' evenings.

Sorica is a live performer who we think has a bright future ahead of him, and working within Berlin's night time lighting industry get's exposed to a shed load of music which inevitably feed's into his music. We were getting strong Fever AM vibes, so artists like Rhyw, Mor Elian, and then the sort of thing that has been released out of Blawan and Pariah's 'Voam' Records in recent times. Broken beats, skitty percussion, Melodic extremes and a weight worthy of any low end equipped rig are all on show so please go get stuck into the latest podcast offering.

"Save for the opening track the entire set is composed of elements that were designed in the month leading up the the performance at Eastern Bloc on June 8th. I had been experimenting with a new live setup arrangement which incorporates improvisation more so than set pieces and I really lent into that idea with this live set in order to embrace happy accidents, crowd interaction and to give a sense of at least semi-controlled chaos. The energy in the room at Eastern Bloc was unreal - an absolute sweatbox, people punching the ceiling. It was an honour to be asked to play there and it kicked open the door to an excellent summer. Manchester is class!"

EBR Podcast 095 - sparkling water dreams presents w/Sorica (Live Hardware Set) - Live 08.6.24

October's edition of the 'Studio' Mix comes from a fairly new face to the ebloc fold, a guest for the mega reliable Mixing Mates night 'JON XVM' Jonny steps up with an hour of ethereal pumpers, driving breakbeat acid,  and enough elastic low end to keep those pegs moving. A nice progression felt throughout the 60 minutes, we're looking forward to seeing more of JON XVM in the future!

"I’m constantly on the hunt to find music, it’s been my soul mission to find old tracks that sound new. I find songs released in between 1990 & early 2000’s tend to have a more serious side to them, which I love, whereas tracks today seem to be more inviting and I absolutely love mixing this contrast in energy around. Nothing beats moments of euphoria quickly being plunging deep into the dark, hopefully you can see that in this mix"

EBR Podcast 096 -JON XVM

in keeping with a Rhythmwerx themed November, this months 'Live' mix comes from previous Rhythmwerx guest 'Node' who played back in August for their last party. Node co-runs gated recordings a london based label that has hosted such artists as Sound Synthesis, Acidulent, Perseus Traxx and Taupe with this in mind you can get a good idea of what to expect from this new mix.

Plenty of Chicago themed vibes, filled with abused resonance control, brash drums, snippets of UK low end mastery and some serious ethereal rave action for good measure. This ones super fun and the energy from the night in question is pretty tangible...get stuck in.

EBR Podcast 099 - Rhythmwerx w/ Node - Live 09.08.24

This weeks 'Live' podcast comes from an Eastern Bloc veteran, a long standing staff member who looked after the Jungle / Drum&Bass side of the shop during his time behind the counter. As you'll hear though his taste didn't stop there, we're super proud to present Karl Roscoe recording from back in May which saw the 'Function Room' collective join forces again alongside other Ebloc members Jim 'Bane' Spratling and Mark Turner.

Karl takes us a on a journey of American dance music dropping some killer cuts from the American dance capitol Detroit: Carl Craig, Underground resistance, Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Model 500 all make appearances as well as playing some NY gems from the likes of Louie Vega and Joe Claussell all glued together with other choice picks including an anthem from a well known British band which I'll leave for you to grab a listen. No confines or boundaries here just really good music.

This week we welcome Will A from the party 'Rhythmwerx' A regular night here at Ebloc and a night that is always super fun, full of happy faces and plenty of outlandish dance moves.  Founder and head honcho of the acid themed night steps up for just under 1.5 hours of resonance filled acid tweakers as well as some bumpy electro that you'll struggle not to move to. 'This is a live studio mix of original material created by myself in 2018, for this set I have used the Akai MPC X, Elektron Digitone and Berhringer Model D with a couple of effects pedals.

My music can span everything from deep house to full throttle techno, and hopefully touches on some of the music I have been interested in over the course of time so far. This set was more floor focused recorded as a warm up for the Eastern Bloc Christmas party in December 2018. Hope you enjoy it!'

Broken FM are a live hardware trio from Sheffield focused on improvisational electronic music. With only basic structures prepared in advance, each performance is unrepeatable and, with the bands influences ranging from drone and ambient via techno to jungle and hardcore, there is no knowing where things might end up. In the past couple of years the band have played acclaimed shows in support of Volte-Face, Orphx, Kerrie and Ben Pest, as well as becoming something of a feature of Sheffield’s No Bounds Festival's closing parties. They also have a forthcoming LP on Reykjavik’s FALK records In summer 2019.
