Los Angeles’s Maral (@maral66) has spent the past half-decade quietly honing an approach that meshes the latest in club music contortions, a range of pulverized dub effects, and samples from her library of Iranian folk, pop and classical musics. More likely to be found working behind the scenes for local labels and club nights, Maral steps into the spotlight on Mahur Club, highlighting a trans-historical collage technique that emphasizes formal experimentation as much as it does personal history.

Exploring (rhythmic) psychedelia in both concrete and abstract forms, Mahur Club dials in on mashed out versions of Jersey club, reggaeton and dub, nodding to psych rock and trip hop via whirlwind takes on contemporary battle dance genres. Repetition and rapid sample chop are utilized on tracks like “don’t trip on your way down” and “lori lullaby”, pairing familiar dance-floor rhythms with waterlogged Farsi vocals in a sublime vortex of tradition, pop and functionality.

Mahur Club features material from ABE, DJ Abosohar and Loris. The release consists of two separate components; a cassette featuring two mixed portions and a free mixtape of individual tracks. Mastering provided by Will Mitchell, artwork by Maral Mahmoudi and design by Caleb Ali Miller.

Super Natural is a spell spun by the inner guides: sometimes they have your best interests in mind but other times....you're wanting it to go this way...

Jonnine’s songs swim in part-spoken, part-sung suspension, sophisticated wordplay amid languorous instruments and devotional invocations with allegorical weight. Imagined as a soundtrack to the surreal Venice-set feature film she and @Zebrablood (Blazer Sound System / Psychic 9-5 Club) are destined to one day make together, it is a testament to eight years of friendship and musical / visual collaboration. Super Natural has a chimeric quality – fleeting and, like any good thriller, pulsing with potential but paced with restraint (as Jonnine says, "it’s what you don’t see that keeps you imagining").

Jonnine’s first solitary offering carries the refinement of her work in the Australian band HTRK. With this EP, a creative block was overcome after years of being urged by her therapist to forge a solo musical identity. It began with a first attempt to play her brother’s broken stringed guitar, unused since 2001, and became these four songs. Written and recorded in Puerto Maldonado, Peru, Big Island, Hawaii and Dandenong Ranges, Australia

Starless and clandestine, the spoken-word delivery of “You’re Wanting It To Go This Way” is streaked with discordant guitar, tripped rhythm and sanguine, fluttering melodic ornament. A rapt rendering of self-sabotage, but patient and alluring, this introduction is reminiscent of Leslie Winer’s Witch.

“I Don’t Seem Myself Tonight” confesses ethereal harmonies with waveless vocals, earthy strums and keyboard sceneries (in Sceneries Not Songs likeness). A tribute to love at first sight as a little death. Subconscious gong in whale tones from Mona Ruijs (Sound Interventions).

The penultimate “You Can Leave The Vampires” is fettered by guitar from HTRK bandmate Nigel Yang against a moody, cautionary libretto. This collaboration yields ritualistic results as the object of the spell is appealed to break with an addictive game of chance by the overlapping mantras “If I can leave you / you can leave too” and “Please, you can be free”

The playful “Scorpio Rises Again” simmers with Audrey Horne cheek; bass guitar, finger clicks and a whistle from Conrad Standish (CS + Kreme) in beguiling denouement.

With stories unlocked by the interior dreaming of Super Natural, Jonnine and Nigel’s collaboration as HTRK opened up and new material (their 2019 album, Venus in Leo) sprang forth immediately after. The inner guides may delude when kept quiet: their expression is a way towards healing, even their most haunted song.

Food, sex, glory to God; in which order? Do you first eat, and then pray to thank Them? Or perhaps coupling takes the top spot for you. 

Each of these three fundamentals is about service. What is your way of serving others while you’re in this world? And will we keep doing it ever after? In heaven—if we’ll make it there—will W serve us their mass of resonating frequencies and clipping digital ornaments? 

A new release by W is here to go alongside our feasts, orgies, and other acts of devotion. Yes, it’s suited for all kinds of services. You must try it on fried fish, living bodies, or celestial ones. 

From right to left and back again from left to right; W spins the middle frequencies into a ritual that helps us to forget ourselves. For a while, heaven and earth exist on the horizon, instead of the vertical. 

The sonic horizon reminds us of the beauty of the plain from which nothing arises to compete with God. What's more, the panning offers an exercise in humility: everything is around you, but you’re not the center. 

The distorting of those sweet basslines tells you that what you’re hearing is growth and rot, crop and compost, both at the same instance. The distortion invites you to go medieval—think Ars moriendi, the art of dying. Learn from these sounds by reflecting on how they’re ready—but not willing—to leave this plane at any moment. 

The sounds that make up Maanpinna follow neither a linear understanding of time, nor a hierarchical understanding of bodies, but an instantaneous one of both. You could call it quantum music, but then why would you do so when you can call it a service? 

Of the three acts of services mentioned, sex and God demand the most trust. Can you trust these sounds? You could learn to do so by listening to them on repeat. No: forget the idea of being able to know music, forget beginnings and ends; try living with these sounds forever, always unearthing new aspects. 

Commit to the sounds, because why else would they trust you? Touch the wobbly melodies and feel them touching you like nothing has ever done before. 

Apart from the sea of sine waves, Maanpinna sometimes gives you bursts, pops, and washes of filtered white noise. They are gestures of good faith made by the music itself towards you. If you didn't trust the sounds before, perhaps now you will. 

Those bursts are not pure noise, but cut down to a serving size by W. The modified noise tells you what the dead always tell the living: ‘What I am, you will become.’ The art, in life and audio, is in learning to lose. It’s a lesson that reverberates deep in the bare soundscape of Maanpinna. 

It is music made from very few elements. And while reduction has always formed the basis for aural worship, on the hands of W, sounds are never reduced to the level of blasphemy: there's always the noise and the distortion.
