Sickness unto death in an age of commodified well-being: approaching death from the point of view of an actualised virtual eternity. The commodification of daily life and the self, preclude the possibility of reincarnation, we do not identify ourselves as a cycle, a movement, an expression of life itself but as a single product that exists in and for itself.
 
The supermarket social network obliterates the surface of material hybridising, detaining all movement to self enclosed unit reductions, excommunicating mutation. Encapsulated in a fixed identity, packaged and promoted, immune to the infection of outsiders. The social contract of a pre-sealed self, branded with calculated sell by date, sentenced to a shelf life of inter-passive exchange.  
 
Shelf Life compiles this synthetic axis, upon which we bide out time smiling.

Elvin Brandhi is welcomed to the index of C.A.N.V.A.S. releases as the first solo release of 2019 and the third commission since the conversion from events series to label in 2018. As a performance nomad whose very practice is simultaneously about engagement with place and a lack of geographic singularity - there could not be a more fitting accomplice to C.A.N.V.A.S.’ effort as a self-publishing artist group to build a collaborative community despite increasing dispersion. This is the solo project of Welsh artist Freya Edmondes - otherwise known for her role as vocalist in father/daughter duo Yeah You - in which performances mesh a collage of electronic sounds with a disruptive stream of improvised vocals. These tracks are as close to studio versions as this fundamentally live practice gets - roaming recordings, sample blasts, club contortions and the ever present voice alchemically infused. In 25’46” of sound, Elvin’s bio-technological monster appears like a Cronenberg body horror - mouths appearing where they shouldn’t - or a living, breathing post-digital Beckett character narrating their own club induced self-destruction. Yet the future shock is fresh - Shelf Life is as fun to listen to as it is completely disarming.

Warm Winters Ltd. is pleased to announce JC Leisure’s (@jcleisure) latest solo release, 'Mutations For'. The album is built from the artist's collection of mixtapes from circa 1992 onwards that distil the counterculture of rave, free parties and pirate radio broadcasts. 

For the last couple of years this archive has formed the basis for JC Leisure’s hybrid DJ cassette sets, a handful of which are archived on Bandcamp. Aware of each cassette's cultural legacy, with 'Mutations For' JC Leisure sets out to give the archive a higher form of autonomy. Similar to the audio-to-midi processes he developed with his band Raft of Trash (where they use the world-building game Simcity3000 as raw material) the cassette tapes are sampled live and fed to synthesizers, software patches and samplers; allowing them to write their own melodies and rhythms. Leisure has worked with and alongside these results and offers them up on 'Mutations For' as an alternative future to a counterculture's unstable history. 

These ideas are explored further in collaboration with designer Afonso de Matos on the poster that forms the physical realization of this work.

Roaming far and wide from the industrial blueprints of his main outlet as Divorce Ring, Kelby Clark's debut solo release on Eastern Nurseries sees him embrace the eerie melancholia of the pedal steel guitar. Following on his recent contribution to Eastern Nurseries anniversary compilation, "Fields Of Divination" is a pristine, enduring six track journey through haunted spaces. Dark wood, faded postcards, rye on the rocks - the wind is howling.

Since 2017, Deathstar has been a project about the microphone — in Marina Rosenfeld’s hands, a void, a mirror, an unruly instrument of transformation and mediation. This music is heard in traces, through thickly amplified silences punctuated by momentary eruptions of noise or a voice at the threshold of intelligibility. The sculpture at the center of the action—a plexiglas orb housing a 7-microphone array originally installed as part of an exhibition the artist mounted at Portikus, in Frankfurt Germany— performs a recursive operation, listening to and recirculating sounds continuously morphed by feedback and reflection. This machine music repeats itself in seemingly endless versions, abstractly and in an evolving relationship to the grammars of reproduction and performance, presence, absence, and accumulation. Later, recorded traces of this installation rendered as musical notation produce a series of events—concerts that explore the outcomes of the acts of amplifying, writing, and listening.

The four sides of the album Deathstar follow four such events: first, the installation of the Deathstar in exhibition space; then, a piano performance, also within the Deathstar’s machinic environment, of a recording of the installation that Rosenfeld notated on paper; then, her re-notation of these recorded traces in the form of a concerto for piano and chamber orchestra, all aggressively amplified through a wall of guitar amps; and finally, the orchestration’s reduction to something like chamber music, with acoustic instruments tasked with the representation of an ever more attenuated body of traces. Throughout, the extraordinary virtuoso pianist Marino Formenti and ensembles MusikFabrik (Cologne) and Yarn/Wire (New York) extract a dazzling variety of sounds from their readings of the work’s written and acoustic forms. Deathstar is a complex and monumental work from a composer who has long explored the limits of form as an artist and as a listener.

Island of the Hungry Ghosts is a hybrid documentary that moves between the natural, human and spiritual worlds. Located off the coast of Indonesia, the Australian territory of Christmas Island is inhabited by migratory crabs travelling in their millions from the jungle towards the ocean, in a movement that has been provoked by the full moon for hundreds of thousands of years. Poh Lin Lee is a trauma therapist who lives with her family in this seemingly idyllic paradise. Every day, she talks with the asylum seekers held indefinitely in a high-security detention centre hidden in the island’s core, attempting to support them in a situation that is as unbearable as its outcome is uncertain. As Poh Lin and her family explore the island’s beautiful yet threatening landscape, the local islanders carry out their “hungry ghost” rituals for the spirits of those who died on the island without a burial. They make offerings to appease the lost souls who are said to be wandering the jungles at night looking for home.

This album presents the original score Aaron Cupples created for the film. Rich in texture and harmonics, the music is characterised by the bespoke instruments and recording techniques employed in its creation. The soundtrack also features sound recordist Leo Dolgan’s vivid field recordings. All captured on Christmas Island, the four pieces recall insect choruses, strange and ominous bird calls, erupting blowholes, fire, ocean, and Buddhist prayers for the dead.

“Drawing on discussions with director Gabrielle Brady, I began to perceive the island itself as the protagonist, with its own ancient rhythms and cycles set against the transitory human stories it endures. It was my intention to give voice to the island through the score. Imagining what this might sound like, emanating from deep within the landscape, I settled on a handmade long-string instrument. This single 13-foot long wire was tuned, bowed, and electromagnetically oscillated to create slowly evolving textures and deep layers of resonance.

From this foundation, the score introduces rhythm inspired by traditional Chinese festival drumming and chanting of Buddhist nuns recorded on Christmas Island by sound recordist Leo Dolgan. Working closely with him, the score is intentionally kept dark in timbre to allow a merging with the intricate nature recordings, which often play simultaneously with the score.

As the film’s narrative unfolds, harmonic movement and finally melody emerge, bringing a theme to the human stories. Their life rhythms and cycles interwoven with those of the island.” – Aaron Cupples
