Orbital Dance

Co-commissioned by Radio France and INA grm, Basse Brevis by Canadian composer Sarah Davachi was premiered at the Présences 2024 festival, which was dedicated to Steve Reich. Drawing on her own minimalist approach, Sarah Davachi explores, with extreme care, the weavings and complex relationships between the timbral, spatial and durational components of music. Using developments that can be appreciated over time, the composer manages to create music that is extremely precise, subtle and lively. But what is striking, and particularly evident in Basse Brevis, is that such an approach, both abstract and restrained, is nonetheless at times utterly poignant. The work combines moments of formal exploration with moments of pure emotion in a perfectly mastered fashion, creating a gentle tension as it swings between two modes of listening that navigate indecisively within both instrumental and concrete approaches, tracing, in parallel, a diagonal of sound that unfolds around perception, sensation and feeling.

Debuting on Eastern Nurseries with "On a Grain of Rice", Berlin-based, American sound artist Mitchell Keaney traces a compelling line through the metaphysical nature of Arizona's deserts. Derived from a collection of recordings made while wandering the quiet streets of downtown Sedona after hours, Keaney captures the stillness and quiet intensity of the area and transforms it through digital collage and electroacoustic composition.

Forming part of his live performances throughout 2023, the pieces on "On a Grain of Rice" began to emulate their namesake buttes, with their rising tensions, crescendos and descents capturing the essence of the geological landmarks Keaney had hiked around earlier in the year. Connecting these buttes, Keaney built a trio of briefer “trails”, contextualising the mountainous compositions of the buttes with intermissions filled with distant unintelligible conversations, live music bleeding from a neighbourhood bar and gravel crunching underfoot.

Blending harsher textures with a delicate, almost pastoral sensibility, Keaney’s ear for detail has culminated in a body of work that offers an ode to all of the desert dwellers; those who have resided there in the past and present, and especially those who have gone through one in the psychological, or spiritual, sense.

En este EP de cuatro pistas, se entrelazan raíces ancestrales con visiones distópicas del porvenir. Cada track es una invocación: ritmos tribales que laten como tambores ceremoniales se funden con texturas sintéticas, líneas de bajo densas y atmósferas que evocan paisajes urbanos iluminados por neones y envueltos en humo digital.
Inspirado en rituales antiguos pero mirando hacia un horizonte cyberpunk, este trabajo refleja mi estilo personal: crudo, hipnótico y cargado de intención. Es un viaje sonoro donde lo primitivo se conecta con lo post-humano, donde la pista de baile se transforma en un espacio de trance moderno.

ENGLISH:
In this four-track EP, ancestral roots intertwine with dystopian visions of the future. Each track is an invocation: tribal rhythms that beat like ceremonial drums merge with synthetic textures, dense bass lines and atmospheres that evoke urban landscapes illuminated by neon and enveloped in digital smoke.
Inspired by ancient rituals but looking towards a cyberpunk horizon, this work reflects my personal style: raw, hypnotic and loaded with intention. It is a sonic journey where the primitive connects with the post-human, where the dancefloor is transformed into a space of modern trance.
