So I decided I wanted to do something completely different and write an actual song. I started to do this acoustically on the piano, finding a good chord structure and writing some lyrics. Once I had done this and had the makings of a song I took to Logic to make it electronic but I had no intention of making house music. What resulted was almost a hip-hop style beat with some nice guitar licks and lots of strings thrown in over the top.

Hold Me Down

So after playing about on the piano and finding some nice chords I set about getting electronic with them. However once I'd written a big epic string section all the ideas that were floating around my heard involved orchestral instuments, so I thought I would try my hand at writing a short piece of classical music almost exclusively using Logic's 'real' instrument base on the EXS24

Strings & Tings

So I'm back in England which means I've made another tune. This time I stumbled across an acapella of Alice Russell's "Hurry On Now" on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu8UJJEqMLk) and I just had to remix it. The power and soul in her voice is just immense and it sounds so good on its own anyway. I really like the gospel choir backing singers and they're input lends a great hand to the rhythm of the track. Enjoy!

Alice Russell - Hurry On Now (Easy Excess Remix)*Bootleg*

So I wanted to make something slower and with some big sidechained leads having been heavily inspired by some of the music coming out of Australia at the minute, Flume's productions in partiuclar, and also those of Andrew Bayer. For the sample I used an acapella of Joss Stone's "Place Your Hands." I have wanted to sample Joss Stone for ages as her voice is one of my favourites and this leant itself perfectly to what I wanted. I experimented with some sliced vocals as well which I haven't done in a while

What Do You Need?

After taking a bit of a break from house music with my last few productions I have been re-inspired over the summer and thought it was about time to tackle a big, peak-time dance-floor vocal track. Searching through acapellas again I stumbled on a few good cuts from Amerie. I have wanted to make a track with big power piano chords for a while and the vocal snippets leant themselves perfectly to that. Throw in a heavily MK inspired bassline and here is what I came up with!

I was going through the old 'Now That's What I Call Music' albums from when I was young to see if there was anything that leapt out at me to sample, and one tune in particular did. A song by 3-piece R&B act Mis-Teeq entitled 'Scandalous'. I had a play with the vocals, some of which leant themselves to some chugging Chicago beats. Inspired by the suspense-inducing chords of Audiojack's productions it then turned in to a bit more of a melodic number, whilst retaining the no-nonsense beat-bass combo on the drops. Enjoy!

Hypnotize

On the hunt for female vocals to sample, mostly to get some practice in for doing some original work with a vocalist. Was given a few names by a friend and straight up decided to do a remix of this as the original is quite sparse of instruments and I couldn't find an acapella. Quick little project very much inspired by the one and only Maya Jane Coles, hope you enjoy!

Lianne La Havas - Don't Wake Me Up (Easy Excess Remix) *Bootleg*

Again on the hunt for some soulful female vocals to sample I realised I had overlooked a prime candidate: the singer of the most sampled tune of all time nonetheless. I didn't want to be another person to sample Loleatta Holloway's 'Love Sensation,' so I went for one of her lesser known tunes 'Hit & Run' which featured some fantastic snippets to use. I wanted to go for a more jackin' sound with a big whompy bassline, a similar sound to the likes of Dusky and Gorgon City. The slow down and build up is something I have never tried before and something I will probably do again to a bigger degree one day.
