TECH 130 – Gradual – Beware feat. Coppa / Swamp

As drum and bass made deeper inroads into the sunlit land of daytime radio and mainstream acceptance in 2015, the underground scene was defined by the dark and technical sound of neurofunk. And repping that style for Technique are one of their most recent signings, the Spanish production team made up of veterans Alerstorm and Ice Stereo, a team now known as Gradual.

“Beware” asserts its personality right from the intro, demonstrating that Gradual aren't shy of adding a little funk to their neuro. The mighty mic man Coppa rolls through to lay out the groove, delivering a scheme that gives that James Brown-style accent to the first beat of the bar. Even amidst the swirl of dark atmospherics, the urge to get your head nodding is irresistible. Then the heavy grind of the bass that sweeps in from the drop takes the heat up to the next level. It's precision-engineered music that expertly balances production science with dancefloor drive.

Then “Swamp” does things a little differently. Opening with high strings and a hint of approaching drums, Gradual draw us into a light cloud of chill-out ambience. This is savagely punctured by a blade of low-end, signalling the approach of something far more dangerous. That something is a stompingly percussive pattern of drums and bass, but that's just the beginning as the beat switches up and builds even further. And this tune keeps going from there, melding and interweaving layers of drums and bassline to keep that rave engaged right to the end.

If you haven't caught up with Gradual's movements yet, this is where to get on board. This release shows just a few of the facets that these guys can bring to their sound. Along with the cold scientific studio skills, they've got a raw funky rhythmic sensibility, adding up to a clear understanding of how to keep raves electrified. They've got a lot more to show off, so better pay attention.

Alone they stood upon the roof of the world, two minds interlocked beyond the realm of their origin. Delivered into this alternate reality as separate points of consciousness, the definition of their relative distinction was for a while their only grip upon the structures of the past. Staring across the infinite horizon over the edge of their plateau, the meaning of time itself was lost in the entropy of their incarceration. In that endless expanse, the fringes of their perception eroded – stark concepts reacting and evolving in the wake of a forgotten future, bearing fresh complexity as the branches of their minds intertwined. Boundaries melted upon the shores of the present as the separation of elements lost meaning, the properties of addition relentless and timeless – towering beyond their combined mindstate.
 
Following their striking emergence onto EATBRAIN with ‘The Order’ EP in 2016, AGRESSOR BUNX tore a ragged furrow through the year with their rapid rise to the apex of the drum & bass sphere, with releases on Blackout, Trendkill, Bad Taste and Program. With the duo featuring heavily at Eatbrain live shows, they’ve seared their sound deep into the hearts of the label’s massive crew and quickly become embedded in the core of their aesthetic. 2017 brings the release of the Ukrainian pair’s first LP on Eatbrain in the form of the PROPERTIES OF ADDITION LP, which delivers an array of the kind of cutting-edge diverse and heavy-hitting forms of drum & bass that fans of both the Agressor Bunx have come to expect. Their status as elite was undeniable, a twin humanoid team paired with the heavily armed hybrid, all of them augmented with cutting edge wetware and black-ops endtech. Gazing over the wasted metropolitan landscape of the old capital of this dead-end planet, they activated their internal dataspikes carrying their encrypted tasks and poured over the contents // RETRIEVAL - HIGHER LEVEL SONIC WEAPONRY WITH CAPITAL DESTRUCTION CAPABILITIES - COORDINATES TRANSMITTED & EMBEDDED IN SUB-SURFACE NEURAL LAYER // The subnotes indicated its capacity to disintegrate entire buildings with a highly focussed emission of intense articulated resonant frequencies. Looking around, evidence of this was clear, with gaps in the broken skyline, where the great towers of this city’s ruling megacorp once stood. Heaps of fine grey sand lay in their place, the result of the device’s terrible effect - reducing them to base states of entropy. The hybrid scanned the barren landscape with its ocular implants, marking the coordinate location in the team’s HUD systems and rapidly switching through the various optical spectrums of its threat detection system. They set forward determinedly, moving quickly through the ruins that remained, closing the distance to the objective quickly. They moved in deathly silence, their steps masked by phase cancellation pads in their boots, allowing even their hulking hybrid companion to move as a quietly as the whisper of death on the fringe of the wind. 

They took position upon the upper floor of a broken building, looking out upon the crater in which the device rested. The rival merc crew that was working with frenetic pace below to detach the weapon from its housing were basic operators, their heat signatures highly visible and open radio comms, real amateurs. Without a word, the trio dropped down from the vast height, the air moving over them without resistance as their suits excited and repelled the molecules that moved against them. Touching down in silence, their ruthless assault began - shouldering his chaingun, the team’s EM specialist rained a hail of fire upon their rivals with ruthless precision, each shot locked and guided to their mortal marks by the EM signals produced by the weapons of his very targets. His partner moved quickly from cover to cover, his implants working furiously, hijacking the soldiers senses and systems, disabling them and making them easy targets for the hybrid - charging furiously forward, devastating their ranks with its impossible strength. In mere seconds, the bustling center of activity at the crater lay suddenly silent. Without pause they passed through the carnage and approached the device, and gazed at the warning roughly scrawled on its surface ‘BEWARE!”.

The powerful drum and bass duo - TELEKINESIS - return for their 3rd EP - BEWARE! - on seminal tech label EATBRAIN. Their insertion of their latest spike of polished sonics sees the pair teaming up with label boss JADE, as well as one of the imprint’s embedded voices, NUKLEAR MC. With 4 tracks of weighted neural technology, designed to devastate both senses and the dancefloor, Telekinesis demonstrate slickly why they are renowned for consistent and poised sound system assaults. Deep within the shifting sands lay the remains of a once great city, a monument to the hubris of those who had once thought they could conquer the indomitable forces of the planet. To hold back the everpresent encroachment of the dunes they had raised walls of great heights, built upon the sacrifice of those least fortunate among them, those condemned to work beneath the blistering heat of the land. It was through their blood that the city was built, through their blood that the fortunate lived in such an otherwise inhospitable climate. As the death of these sacrifices increased however, they bore new life elsewhere. Their blood, seeping through the cracked desert soil, awakened something long since sealed away.

Fed by their misery, the creature’s power grew beneath the dunes. For each that fell it became stronger, its hunger rising as it tasted more and more that which had been denied to it for so long. Upon the night of the sun’s peak it rose, driven by the heat that still radiated from the earth. It was a malstrom of sand, fire, and bone, an amalgamation of destruction which surged across the landscape. What little life there was in this desolate place was subsumed into its maw, becoming a part of the dynamo which swept towards the city. Its winds battered against the walls, grinding their stones to dust which only furthered the creature’s power. In minutes it had broken through, and as the city was swallowed within the vortex the DUST DEVIL reclaimed for the desert what was its own once again.

MIZO returns to EATBRAIN with the release of DUST DEVIL, a five track EP featuring collaborations with TRILO & CHASER. DOUBLE RUSH features the powerful combination of MIZO & CHASER, as well as the combination of a frantic topline and charging bass which work together to move the track forwards at a rapid pace. DUST DEVIL whips this dynamic energy into a further frenzy as its basses whirl with unrestrained fury atop a devastating drumbeat. While the gradual approach of HORIZON grows to become a steady lock-step rhythm that soars with effortless aptitude over its arpeggiated bassline, MIZO & TRILO’s ARTIFICIAL NOISE takes a different approach as it leaps into the musical melee, bolstered by the power of its roaring synths.The second collaboration with CHASER, CONTACTLESS, closes the EP, its desolate soundscape quickly transformed into a tech filled groove that rides upon its rolling sub and the strange shiftings of its tonal topline synths.
