Rumours of the infernal mechanism were rife amongst the population, that somewhere deep in the sublevels of the city it waited with the eternal patience that belongs only to machines. It was said that those people whom the system had broken, whose minds had snapped – ejecting them from the social architecture… were first incarcerated, analyzed and then taken to it to be erased completely. He was about to find out the truth of this, dragged from his metallic cell by those machine claws, his arms bound tightly across his chest and vocal chords paralyzed. He wanted to scream, terror engulfing him and winding around his vertebrae, giving birth to a black hole within the pit of his stomach... but all that emerged was a whimper of despair. It was registered by the synthetic mind and catalogued in its vast archive of variations of this moment - its casual analysis of this journey to death. The chamber was incomprehensibly vast… and it was there waiting, reaching with its threatening appendages from the shadows, its diabolical jaws enshrouded in the dull green light of a vast viewing screen displaying the symbol of the architect. The teeth started that relentless slicing, the very ground trembling through the power of its mighty workings, the mechanism to be his absolute obliteration… those claws pulling him inexorably towards the end as the viewscreen changed and flashes the word ‘goodbye’. The GRINDER completes its work. In the almost oblivious streets above, a faint rumble is felt – knowing, fearful looks are briefly exchanged before the citizens hurry on with their business.
 
Apex neuro and tech producer MAZTEK arrives with his first full EP on leading d&b label, EATBRAIN. Following up appearances on the label’s Tales of the Undead and Mirror Universe VA LP’s, the GRINDER EP sees Maztek deliver 4 tracks of high-grade dancefloor weaponry, enwrapped in the kind of heavy sonic technology that his fans have come to expect. From the tear-out but tightly wound collaboration with with June Miller in BLAFFER, to the grime-influenced and glitched vocals of GOOD QUESTION that comes in heavy with the evil bounce of its bass – the EP runs a diverse and unique flex. Title-track GRINDER delivers an appropriately punishing assault, packed with sinister sound design and brooding, dynamic riff, whilst TANGLED delivers an edgy and lightly percussive shuffle to accompany its powerful bass. This is both an artist and a label at their best, delivering an overwhelmingly powerful artefact for the dance.

He fled without words from his workplace, the other labourers around glancing quickly up at their fellow tearing across the derelict site of their toil. Ducking between the scaffolds, his hands clawing wretchedly at his heavy form, as his insides churned and wave after wave of pure violence washed through him. He found the entrance, gasping with relief and pain, before dropping swiftly into the cave beneath the foundation and falling starkly into the dim blackness of the tunnels below. Writhing on the cold stone ground, he felt it ripping through his back and up the side of his face, his eyes glazing then filling with the fire of a pure primal energy as he arched his head back and let out a tearing sound of unleashed psychic tearing and the breaking of his mind. It had him in its grasp, claws ripping through his hands – its presence overtaking him and unveiling his true SHAPESHIFTER nature.

AKOV follows up his recent initial foray on the label with a solid step into the EATBRAIN fold in the form of the SHAPESHIFTER EP. Comprising 4 tracks of exquisitely dynamic neurofunk and experimental beats that dares to dive between tempos and deliver an entirely fresh take on the genre. From the outset with title track SHAPESHIFTER, a curve ball hits swift, as a straight intro leads into a drop that stretches reality and deviates between spacious reese action and busy percussion, before heavily reglitching itself into a deliciously wonky form. ABRAXAS leads a more epic path with a shimmering, beautiful intro infused with ethnic aesthetics that gives way to an entirely punishing machinegun drop that only pauses to reload and issue a heavy staccato bass cannon. With GAMES WITH GOD featuring THE CLAMPS, the metallic nature of the drums edges up a notch and the vibe leans toward a more sinister but rolling edge. FIRST CONTACT turns the tempo way down to 128 but elevates the attitude to a new level, delivering a chugging and brutish stepper of a tune that carries its neuro core effectively to the vein.

The range of ideas within the Shapeshifter EP serves as a technical breath of fresh air to a genre that’s build on the concept of progression and experimentation. Akov delivers the manifesto of an artist intent on pushing the sound further, delivered on a label at the forefront of futuristic d&b.

He perched upon the barren ledge, high above the valley beyond – the place where his people had resided for an aeon of peace, withdrawn from the overwhelming technologies of the outer rim, hiding in the obscurity of tranquility. The habitat below was a mere dot against his retina, his imagination doing the work in constructing an image of the bustle of the many lives within. He carried with him the sacred resin, and carried within himself the rite of his people, handed down between generations for as long as their history could remember. His sacrifice would ensure the peace of a generation more - his torment would be their strength. Civilizations that had come before tore themselves into pieces - times of peace held the unspoken lies of restrained savagery, the bitter truth of which came frequently, and bloodily as brothers and sisters set upon each other with unbridled hatred. That dark ferocity was within him now, carefully extracted from the minds of the populace by the ancient methods, he was the vessel of his peoples’ catharsis. He hesitated a moment more, looking out to the distant peaks that had touched the heart of his eye since childhood, the gravity of the setting sun drawing his soul to the gold crested radiance of their summits. With a fluid motion he poured the resin down his gullet, felt it snaking through is entire being, searing the illumination of universal history deep within him. The staggering truths towered beyond him, twisting up in harmony before splitting, the many faces of darkness emerging, the true face of nature erupting in blackness, the unimaginable horrors that inhabit plains untouchable, the fiends that feed off life and light and invisibly, that grow in suffering… they felt his sight, knew they were exposed, their eyes turning inward to his psyche – tearing him apart, pushing through his body and erupting from within. The resin did its work… as the creatures unspeakable feasted on him across dimensions, roots burst from his ruined body, branches spiraling up trapping all in their path. A silence settled on the outcrop, nature threaded its fingers of wind through new grass, whilst the sun set against horrific merging of life and the terrifying living monument of DIVERGENCE.

On October 8th Ukrainian-Russian trio TEDDY KILLERZ kicked off the first official Neuropunk remix competition for their track SHINE off their PANIC ATTACK EP. For this occasion they went all out and offered some incredible prizes, from Native Instruments KOMPLETE 12 packages to an official release on Neuropunk Records for the first place. As the judges, including Gydra, Nais and Vigilante from Artists & Relations, began to work through to the 300+ entries from newcomers and veterans alike, it became clear that more than one of these incredible remixes has to be released. So they decided to release the first THREE winners on the SHINE REMIXES EP!

Coming in at third place we have a fresh remix by a veteran from Auckland: INTERCEPT! Even though he started his career back in 2009, due to real life obligations he took a break a few years later and has only returned just now. The chopped up sounds weaved into this quick aggressive techy sound barrage give the track a whole other level of energy that just gets you moving. After the wild first drop he slows it down to half-time that still hits you just as hard, if not more.

From new-school to old-school, second place goes to PICOTA & KUMBH! Although they don't experience much darkness in their sunny hometown Seville, these two are experts in creating dark atmospheres, as they have clearly demonstrated in their remix. As soon as that first old-school reese bass hits, you know you're in for one hell of a ride. With funk oozing out of everywhere and some room-filling bass, you have no choice but to nod along. In the second half the duo change the straight-forward drum rhythm into a more syncopated old-school break flow.

Drumroll, please. First place in the first official Neuropunk remix competition goes to... MOEKEL! From old-school to Schnitzel-school, this talented Austrian newcomer takes the track in yet another wildly different direction, standing out as one of the most unique productions of the bunch. With his signature big analogue-sounding synth plucks he creates a sound that is minimal, yet hard-hitting, and full of details. Schnitzelstep, as some would call it. After the first full-speed drop the muted drums lead us into a half-time break before switching back for one last big DnB finale.
