The planet was barren, sundered by spiderwebbed cracks that shot across its rugged landscape. From within this lattice of fractures effervesced a number of alien vapours most certainly lethal to the lone explorer trudging atop the planet’s stony hide, were it not for the manifold atmospheric filters contained within their spacesuit. Though the planet was dead now, stories told of a great civilization that had once flourished upon its grounds and that had left behind great treasures in the wake of their untimely collapse. Thus it was that the explorer had come to this forsaken place, braving its hostile environment upon the advice of a spacer’s bar story told since the planet’s discovery.

Not one to shy away from the challenges of a novel venture, the explorer double-checked their filters before continuing onwards into the fog, single minded in their devotion to uncovering the truth of a mysterious tale that had been told time and time again within the sector’s many spaceports. Such was their devotion that for a time they did not notice the great object that now loomed before them, thrumming with energy as it slowly rotated off center from its poles. When the explorer did look up, they did so awestruck. Could this be the planet’s fabled treasure that lay before them? What could it be if that was the case? These were the thoughts that ran through their head as the objected emitted a low rumble and began to seemingly fade out of existence. Distraught, the explorer sprinted towards the object, only to discover that their own feet seemed to no longer make impacts upon the ground. Indeed, as though mirroring the strange geometric object the explorer had begun to fade too, and no single scream did escape their lips as they were swallowed up by THE MIRAGE.

LIVEON returns to EATBRAIN for his second full EP, which follows in the sonic wake of his debut “Stutter” EP that smashed through the EATBRAIN horde in October of 2020. After interim appearances on the label’s “Divergence III” compilation and Blackout’s “Evolutions” series, LIVEON now leads listeners into MIRAGE, an EP that sees the continued development of the artist’s sonic palette across a series of enchanting rhythmic sequences backed by the sheer bassweight central to the EATBRAIN philosophy.

It began with a low rumble from all degrees of the horizon, and envelopment of portentous sound that seemed to emanate from everywhere and nowhere all at once. From high above, fluctuations in the jetstream whipped the clouds into a frenzy, stretching, swirling, and blending them into a slate of blackest-grey from within which thunder and lightning began to add their voices to the ensuing cacophony. As the roar on the horizon grew, the very air itself seemed to slip and surge around the sonics that cut through it, churning it from stillness into a great gale that nipped with icy jaws at the flesh of any caught within its flow. Then, as though in a perfectly discordant concert with the air above, the ground itself began to shake, roiling in opposite motion as the second wheel of a planetary mill set to grind those upon the surface into dust. From within the fissures that scarred the Earth’s surface poured rivers of magma that made a cruel mockery of the world’s aqueous veins as they brought death to all with which they intersected and poisoned the air with toxic gasses long kept locked beneath the earth. Those who strove yet to live within this hellish world could not but hear a single voice in their minds, chiding them for forgetting what had always been known, dooming them to watch as the ENSUING CATACLYSM consumed the world that had once been their home.

I know it's hard to believe that New Olympus was once considered a bastion of hope in the futuristic wastelands that we call home, but you're going to have to trust me on this one. That is, until the still on-going war between the city's two factions, us cybernetically-enhanced "Cybers" and the upper city's squeaky-clean "Suits", erupted, but you knew that already. Let me tell you about something you might not know yet - how exactly it all began.

Don't get me wrong, there was always tension between us and them. Crime, discrimination, you name it. The rebellion you know today was already well on its way, with our de-facto leaders Maxwell and Zarah organising protests all over the city. Through everything, through thick and thin, they always had each other's back. However, one day Maxwell didn't show up on their regular strategy meetings, which set off Zarah's alarm bells. She immediately left the room. There was NOTHING LEFT TO SAY for her, she knew that someone must have gotten to him and she knew she had to something about it, quickly.

She rushed to his apartment, where she found a lingering aerial recording that Maxwell managed to leave via our STAZIS messaging system. However, she only managed to make out one thing: "Rescue Me". Plus, a whole lot of obscenities towards his captors. These damn Suits must have gotten to him. Luckily, he anticipated this, which is why he connected his tracking chip to the recording, allowing Zarah to quickly locate his position. A little bit too quickly for her tastes, but every moment counted here, so she geared up and set out to infiltrate their hideout.

She works her way through the, for her, laughably lax security and arrives at the room they are keeping her partner in crime in. He seems unconscious, strapped to a kind of machine she had never seen before! As she hastily untied him, his eyes shot open. However only when he spoke up, his voice now a menacing mechanical growl repeatedly grunting "Let me SEE YOUR EYES" at her, did she notice something was off. It was already too late at that point though. He grabbed her, immediately injecting the remote-control program that the Suits had infected him with into her arm. They had become mindless puppets. With the intel extracted from their memories, the Suits were able to decimate our forces, effectively slowing the movement down by decades. However, we have persevered. And we WILL get our revenge.

Long had rumors abounded of places where the veil between worlds was thin, where one could walk into other planes as though simply stepping into their own home. Such points of crossing were said to be rare, and the few that occurred naturally were secrets well kept by those who knew of their location for they held the potential for immense power in their shimmering surfaces. Each such point was said to be guarded by a Keeper, unknowable beings from neither side of the threshold who kept watch over all that passed through, their existence proven only by the remains of those deemed unworthy that lay before their lairs.

For one who possessed apt knowledge of such places, passage through such portals was indeed possible with proper preparation. On rare occasions, when the energies of the earth rested in perfect balance, such portals would appear in the most isolated portions of the world. Those who could foresee this would wait patiently in such places for the day of crossing, preparing themselves for this most unlikely of opportunities. In focused ritual they would etch symbols into the gate’s position, warding them from the Keeper’s wrath. As the portal appeared they would take the momentous single step into the beyond, striding confidently into a world unknown as they passed through THE DOOR.

EATBRAIN veteran L 33 returns to the label with his next solo EP, THE DOOR, as he continues to champion his energetic tech focused sound on the like minded label. With a legacy built on EATBRAIN across releases such as 2016’s Karate LP & a slew of further EPs on the label, THE DOOR carries on in this tradition with four tracks emblazoned with powerful sonic presence by the longtime EATBRAIN collaborator.
