The conflict had raged through the night, staining the battlefield black with the dark blood of the fallen, a crust of congealing life permeating the bleak soil of this desolate place - the air punctuated the occasional shriek as soldiers fell - their voices joined with the weak moans of the dying that littered the landscape. Their enemies were gaining ground on that field of death, threatening to overwhelm the horde and put an end to their centuries-long advance. The cold, sharp light of the full moon wrapped each of them in its bitter grasp, tendrils of the deepest anger and regret encircling them as the shadows from the dense branches of the grim forest of their surroundings. Their old friend lay prone at their feet, the gun that ended that precious spark of consciousness still smoking in Lenny’s hands, his weathered face cast down, cold eyes staring at the carnage of his making. Blood flowed darkly from the head wound, a growing treacle puddle reflecting the moon above in its metallic embrace, each of their faces around it mirrored darkly in that slowly expanding pool of their brother’s end. The curse that had escaped his lips as he realized the betrayal was seared into their ears, the final glance spiked through with heartbreak entwined in deepest hate burned into their retinas. But for all their regret, their patriarch had spoken, made himself clear… the family is violence, but it is not the twisted pleasures that he had chased, and the family line, when crossed – is the very end of consciousness.

Snow crunched lightly under his paws as he made his way across the forest floor in the still darkness. Faint light from the pale moon penetrating the depths of the woods occasionally rippled across his fur as he moved stealthily towards the perimeter. The fur around his mouth carried the stains of the many carcasses those pointed teeth had torn into as their dark-tinted red warmth slipped away beneath his fearsome frame. His blood appetite freshly sated, it was time to return to his brothers. The torn and broken light of the forest’s horizon spread across his good eye, that portal to the open plains and the mountains beyond. Smells of the forest’s life and the subtle sounds of the slowly beating hearts of its hibernating inhabitants surrounded him, each distinctly offering the promise and debt of the food they would become with the cyclic melt. His iris shrunk as he padded out into the pure white snow plain, their god, the mountain, towering above in all of its bleak awe. A frozen gust blew across his fur, carrying with it the sound of the distant bloodhowl of his kind, a twisted mournful note full of rage that resonated with his instinct, triggering adrenaline and flooding his form with anger. Quickening his pace, he darted for the pack, lips curled back against fangs that would soon let another pathetic usurper’s lifeforce spill onto nature’s coldest of blankets. The lair of the Wölfe lay ahead, his kind... connected in cruel mortality.

He perched upon the barren ledge, high above the valley beyond – the place where his people had resided for an aeon of peace, withdrawn from the overwhelming technologies of the outer rim, hiding in the obscurity of tranquility. The habitat below was a mere dot against his retina, his imagination doing the work in constructing an image of the bustle of the many lives within. He carried with him the sacred resin, and carried within himself the rite of his people, handed down between generations for as long as their history could remember. His sacrifice would ensure the peace of a generation more - his torment would be their strength. Civilizations that had come before tore themselves into pieces - times of peace held the unspoken lies of restrained savagery, the bitter truth of which came frequently, and bloodily as brothers and sisters set upon each other with unbridled hatred. That dark ferocity was within him now, carefully extracted from the minds of the populace by the ancient methods, he was the vessel of his peoples’ catharsis. He hesitated a moment more, looking out to the distant peaks that had touched the heart of his eye since childhood, the gravity of the setting sun drawing his soul to the gold crested radiance of their summits. With a fluid motion he poured the resin down his gullet, felt it snaking through is entire being, searing the illumination of universal history deep within him. The staggering truths towered beyond him, twisting up in harmony before splitting, the many faces of darkness emerging, the true face of nature erupting in blackness, the unimaginable horrors that inhabit plains untouchable, the fiends that feed off life and light and invisibly, that grow in suffering… they felt his sight, knew they were exposed, their eyes turning inward to his psyche – tearing him apart, pushing through his body and erupting from within. The resin did its work… as the creatures unspeakable feasted on him across dimensions, roots burst from his ruined body, branches spiraling up trapping all in their path. A silence settled on the outcrop, nature threaded its fingers of wind through new grass, whilst the sun set against horrific merging of life and the terrifying living monument of DIVERGENCE.

An endless darkness beckoned ahead, a deep void beyond that held its own gravity, pulled him ahead one paw at a time. Beneath his furry exterior, tucked in the warmth of tightly woven layers of the cotton, the fast beating of his organic heart pulsated nervously, stretching his chest stitches at the seams with its urgency in a constant rhythm. The shadows of the passage flickered in deathly silence over the uniform blackness of his glass bead eyes. Something was out there. He withdrew, sinking into the warm folds of a distant memory – being dropped by his skin companion, and the fuss that followed the soft hairless ones surrounding him with hushed cries, picking him up and dusting him off, holding him close and pressing him back into the fat pink digits of the little one as she kissed him on the eye and promised never to drop him again. The sound of tearing fabric pulled him at once back into the stark reality that faced him, as he looked down in horror at the cotton spilling from his shoulder… his arm slowly tumbling to the floor and landing with a soft and almost noiseless thud against the bleak floor. As he was still registering the beginnings of his own separation, the vast blade swung again – leaving him staggering in his new confusing balance, a furry torso on legs, wobbling unsteadily in the darkness. Then his vision fell forward, he was looking at himself… was that his armless body in front of him? How was it possible? His simple mind was reeling as his head went tumbling toward the floor, spinning as it dropped. The glint of the HELLBLADE caught his eye as his attacker stepped into the light, a hideous body of stacked limbs and rough stitches, cotton spilling out of the seams of its fur… the antithesis of innocence loomed heavily across the dying creature, the glint of his glass eyes faded as the TEDDY KILLER looked coldly upon its meaningless end.
