Their status as elite was undeniable, a twin humanoid team paired with the heavily armed hybrid, all of them augmented with cutting edge wetware and black-ops endtech. Gazing over the wasted metropolitan landscape of the old capital of this dead-end planet, they activated their internal dataspikes carrying their encrypted tasks and poured over the contents // RETRIEVAL - HIGHER LEVEL SONIC WEAPONRY WITH CAPITAL DESTRUCTION CAPABILITIES - COORDINATES TRANSMITTED & EMBEDDED IN SUB-SURFACE NEURAL LAYER // The subnotes indicated its capacity to disintegrate entire buildings with a highly focussed emission of intense articulated resonant frequencies. Looking around, evidence of this was clear, with gaps in the broken skyline, where the great towers of this city’s ruling megacorp once stood. Heaps of fine grey sand lay in their place, the result of the device’s terrible effect - reducing them to base states of entropy. The hybrid scanned the barren landscape with its ocular implants, marking the coordinate location in the team’s HUD systems and rapidly switching through the various optical spectrums of its threat detection system. They set forward determinedly, moving quickly through the ruins that remained, closing the distance to the objective quickly. They moved in deathly silence, their steps masked by phase cancellation pads in their boots, allowing even their hulking hybrid companion to move as a quietly as the whisper of death on the fringe of the wind.

They took position upon the upper floor of a broken building, looking out upon the crater in which the device rested. The rival merc crew that was working with frenetic pace below to detach the weapon from its housing were basic operators, their heat signatures highly visible and open radio comms, real amateurs. Without a word, the trio dropped down from the vast height, the air moving over them without resistance as their suits excited and repelled the molecules that moved against them. Touching down in silence, their ruthless assault began - shouldering his chaingun, the team’s EM specialist rained a hail of fire upon their rivals with ruthless precision, each shot locked and guided to their mortal marks by the EM signals produced by the weapons of his very targets. His partner moved quickly from cover to cover, his implants working furiously, hijacking the soldiers senses and systems, disabling them and making them easy targets for the hybrid - charging furiously forward, devastating their ranks with its impossible strength. In mere seconds, the bustling center of activity at the crater lay suddenly silent. Without pause they passed through the carnage and approached the device, and gazed at the warning roughly scrawled on its surface ‘BEWARE!”.

The powerful drum and bass duo - TELEKINESIS - return for their 3rd EP - BEWARE! - on seminal tech label EATBRAIN. Deep within the shifting sands lay the remains of a once great city, a monument to the hubris of those who had once thought they could conquer the indomitable forces of the planet. To hold back the everpresent encroachment of the dunes they had raised walls of great heights, built upon the sacrifice of those least fortunate among them, those condemned to work beneath the blistering heat of the land. It was through their blood that the city was built, through their blood that the fortunate lived in such an otherwise inhospitable climate. As the death of these sacrifices increased however, they bore new life elsewhere. Their blood, seeping through the cracked desert soil, awakened something long since sealed away.

Fed by their misery, the creature’s power grew beneath the dunes. For each that fell it became stronger, its hunger rising as it tasted more and more that which had been denied to it for so long. Upon the night of the sun’s peak it rose, driven by the heat that still radiated from the earth. It was a malstrom of sand, fire, and bone, an amalgamation of destruction which surged across the landscape. What little life there was in this desolate place was subsumed into its maw, becoming a part of the dynamo which swept towards the city. Its winds battered against the walls, grinding their stones to dust which only furthered the creature’s power. In minutes it had broken through, and as the city was swallowed within the vortex the DUST DEVIL reclaimed for the desert what was its own once again.

MIZO returns to EATBRAIN with the release of DUST DEVIL, a five track EP featuring collaborations with TRILO & CHASER. DOUBLE RUSH features the powerful combination of MIZO & CHASER, as well as the combination of a frantic topline and charging bass which work together to move the track forwards at a rapid pace. DUST DEVIL whips this dynamic energy into a further frenzy as its basses whirl with unrestrained fury atop a devastating drumbeat. While the gradual approach of HORIZON grows to become a steady lock-step rhythm that soars with effortless aptitude over its arpeggiated bassline, MIZO & TRILO’s ARTIFICIAL NOISE takes a different approach as it leaps into the musical melee, bolstered by the power of its roaring synths.The second collaboration with CHASER, CONTACTLESS, closes the EP, its desolate soundscape quickly transformed into a tech filled groove that rides upon its rolling sub and the strange shiftings of its tonal topline synths. Everyone keeps secrets, everyone lies, and most even steal when the situation abides. Sins like these, small as they are, are an integral part of the human condition. I should know. It’s my job to investigate these things after all. I look past the lies, peer into the secrets and see the sins of all who come under my gaze, scrutinizing them from the impunity of my position and doling out the requisite punishments appropriately. It’s a fortunate position that I find myself in, for otherwise I would be counted well within the ranks of those whom I investigate.

My sins arise in the oddest of places, seeping through the walls I place around them. I take every effort to keep them controlled, locked up tightly with the key thrown away. But there is another essence inside me, one that must sometimes come out to play. Its hunger is ravenous and fed only by violence, and it drives me to madness within a crimson haze. Rising unpredictably, it bursts from its cage with ferocity as it takes control of my mind. Under its influence I am twisted & torn, a terrifying beast of malice and rage. Those around me are forfeit whether friend or foe, for the beast knows no such distinctions when it overtakes me. I wake from such moments with faint memories clouded still by that red mist, only to find the appalling truth surrounding me at every term. The word now spreads of a monstrous man, who roams the streets slaying with reckless abandon. Its this man I now track, the task of my job, but what they do not know is that the MONSTER INSIDE was me all along.

SMOOTH (also one part of TELEKINESIS) makes his solo EATBRAIN debut with the MONSTER INSIDE EP featuring four fiendish tracks in his signature style. ROLY-POLY opens the EP with a devious rolling bassline interspersed with powerful horn blasts and boisterous vocal shots. RIDE OUT features the vocal tones of MC COPPA for a quickly accelerating tune that peaks with the metallic pulsations of its bassline and rapid fire percussion in a devastating flurry. MONSTER INSIDE darkens the tone of its predecessor, with its sinister pads providing the backing for a grinding bassline that slithers through the track’s low end, whilst DEVILS HEAD amplifies this atmosphere, maintaining its sinister elements while pushing them into overdrive for a furious finale to the EP. With the MONSTER INSIDE EP, SMOOTH lands his unique sound on EATBRAIN with a devious work sure to resonate with the EATBRAIN horde.

Beyond the reach of both time & space lay a land not bound by such restrictive rules, in which all manner of phenomena beyond that of the material ordinary were possible. Within this distant realm the so called “laws” of nature disobeyed themselves, warping the perceptions of any who had managed to successfully undertake the multiplanar journey to reach its impossible location. Herein, stone grew with the vivacity of plants through air that seemed to surround any being with an aberrant curiosity, as though inquisitive of what sought to inhale its essence. The waters of the world, such as they were, provided a more sturdy footing that that of the tumultuous earth from which gouts of flame occasionally appeared, perfectly inert as though frozen in time. 

Whilst the journey could be made, true navigation through this plane was impossible for beings of the human material plain as evidenced by the seemingly mummified figures that occasionally appeared across its lands. Prisoners of endless age, their bodies held the positions of their final waking moments, trapped halfway through motions & expressions that would never find completion. Their faces bore no pain, their bodies no wounds. The sounds of their ends, it was said, were all of the evidence that they had passed. Within these ABSTRACT PLACES, such dying cries reverberated endlessly, each adding their own sonic character to the quiet din of death that filled the air.
JOE FORD makes his Eatbrain debut with ABSTRACT PLACES, his first solo release both on the label and since his 2018 LP Colours in Sound. LUMBERING BEAST opens the EP upon the roaring tonalities of its gargantuan bassline, backed by the determined strides of its steady drumbeat. THE END decries an apocalyptic demise with its sinister synth arpeggio and the rending sweeps of its bassline, which cleave through the track with unparalleled might. URGENCY wastes no time in rushing to fill the void left by its predecessor, speeding forth with a torrent of snares surrounded by an electrified sonic atmosphere. WAR MARCH issues the command to surrender in the face of its unrestrained might, before delivering a bassline barrage that closes the EP with finality. With ABSTRACT PLACES, JOE FORD holds nothing back across his first four track appearance on the EATBRAIN label.

A young boy walked through the halls of his family’s house, treading with dread upon the creaking floorboards on the way towards his bedroom. With his face turned downwards into a frown, the boy wished to return to his old home, which had not creaky floors nor the strange smell of ages worn into its walls. His parents had called this new house “historic” and a good “fixer-upper”, but such thoughts were lost on the boy who thought only of comforts he had once known. The boy’s dog too seemed to share this opinion, barking at shadows and peering worriedly into such places as the basement which terrified the boy. Thus, the boy was pleased to see that his canine confidant lay curled at the foot of his bed as he entered his room, though his attention quickly focused itself upon new inhabitant: a pristine teddy bear that sat at the base of his closet.

With youthful wonderment the boy picked up the stuffed animal as a smile spread across his face. As he resolved to thank his parents for what could only be their gift, the boy heard a voice from the bear itself. “Hello my new friend” said the bear with a smile “Why don’t you sit down, lets play a while.” At the sound of this voice the dog awoke with a start, confusing the boy with a fearsome growl directed at the new toy. “Oh don’t be so jealous,” the bear snapped back “two is better than one in case monsters attack.” At the sound of this word the boy thought to check the closet for such things, which liked to hide there in old homes such as his. As he timidly cracked open the closet the bear spoke once more, “Don’t you worry yourself my new friend, that’s what I am here for!”. With closet door now ajar the dog let out a bellowing bark, and just before it slammed shut the boy peered into the dark. He was aghast as he saw a strange tentacle which seemed to run from his new toy into the darkness beyond. Feeling his distress the bear spoke at last with finality “Trust me young child, no monster will be your end. I’ve dealt with them all because WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS.”

SMOOTH marks his second EATBRAIN release of the year with his latest single WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS as he brings DC BREAKS along with him for their EATBRAIN debut. A veteran duo in the Drum & Bass scene, DC BREAKS have delivered their sound for over a decade on labels such as RAM Records, Viper Recordings, Blackout, and more. With WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS, SMOOTH & DC BREAKS present the follow up to SMOOTH’s Monster Inside EP from earlier in the year, imbuing their latest single with the same horror influence & hard edged sounds that find a fitting home on EATBRAIN.
