"A group of elderly ramblers..." is a new body of work that begins by reflecting on time spent as a bewildered visitor and active listener in the Sichuan Province capital of Chengdu, China. First exhibited at the University of California, Irvine in early 2017, a foundational component of the project are field recordings of music being performed or performed to in various public parks throughout the city, namely People's Park in the city center, a lively hub for exercise, dancing, and all other kinds of theatrical and casual performance involving music. As an installation at UCI, the songs played from PA-system speakers that alternated between playing the songs in their entirety and a very quietly playing park ambient noise, or "park tone". Around eight hours of music was recorded over the five weeks I spent in Chengdu and will serve as a continual wellspring for material as the project moves forward.
