해령은 해저 산맥을 일컫는 용어이다. 세계의 바다 속에 생성된 수천 미터 깊이에 달하는 산맥에는 중앙해령(mid-ocean ridge)이 있고, 이 해령 곳곳에 검은 열수(black smoker)가 황화광물을 분출하고 있다고 한다. 이 뜨겁고 검은 줄기가 심해의 차가운 바닷물 속에서 굴뚝처럼 굳은 구멍을 통해 연기처럼 솟아나오는 사진을 보게 되었다. 거대한 산맥 속에서 형성되어 지표를 향해 용솟음쳐 나오는 열수, 그리고 햇빛이 없이도 열수분출구 주위에서 검은 열수가 지닌 미네랄을 기반으로 하여 생성된 '장미 정원'이라 불리우는 생태계에 대한 이야기가 경이로웠고, 이와 같은 생명으로의 비상을 음악적으로 표현해보고자 했다.

An oceanic ridge is a term referring to an underwater mountain range. In the world's oceans, there are mid-ocean ridges in a mountain range that is thousands of meters deep, and black smokers are said to be spewing out sulfide minerals throughout these ridges. I came across a photo of the hot, black stem rising like smoke through a hole solidified like a chimney in the cold waters of the deep sea. I was amazed by the story about the hydrothermal water formed in a vast mountain range and gushing toward the surface, and the ecosystem called 'Rose Garden' that was created based on the minerals of the black hydrothermal water around the hydrothermal vent even without sunlight. "Hae Ryoung- Black Smokers" is about conquering life.

Emergent Phenomena for the TACETi Ensemble was composed in November of 2023, following the development of a sophisticated system for real-time structural analysis of live microphone input. A trio for alto saxophone, trombone, and electric guitar, the electronics are entirely generative, using a self-training machine learning system. A clustering algorithm alongside an index of data from rapid analysis searches for temporal points of spectral self-similarity across all three microphone inputs. When patterns in harmonic spectra, amplitude, and other musical parameters are recognized, the system gradually learns from what it hears and classifies these sonorities to create a temporal map of musical ‘objects’ in the work. This perpetually growing store of data is used to respond to the musicians accordingly with generative material. Four layers of generative electronics take place: Each “novel” sound that the computer perceives is immediately recorded into a series of perpetually recording buffers, which are categorized and written to disk. When the computer perceives a match between past and present, it retrieves the samples written at each point in the past to perform a variety of manipulations, based upon what is heard in the present moment. Secondly, based on the amount of time that has elapsed since the matching sample was taken, how many times it has occurred, and the spectral and musical characteristics of each “object”, the computer will combine discrete pre-recorded samples to generate a composite sound in response. Thirdly, each of the three microphone signals are processed according to perceived patterns and sonic data, such as amplitude, density of musical activity, or frequency spectra. Lastly, a variety of other processes are performed both on the input from the musicians, and from the sounds generated by the system itself. In each moment, this may result in new material similar to what is performed by the musicians, or new material in stark contrast to what it perceives, a dynamic, mercurial system which is learning and changing with each passing moment.
This work was conceptualized while recovering from an injury in the Summer of 2023 outside of Berlin. Inspired by the lasting neurological effects this injury had on my body, which was contorting itself to protect my spine from further injury, I was struck by the behavior of my own human body as a complex system that in fact, I had little control over. Correspondingly, I felt renewed interest in developing new systems of interactivity between human musicians and machines. My goal was to create a work that does not rely on temporal synchronicity between electronics and the musicians, such as a click track or precise soundfile triggering, nor sensors and gestural tracking, but rather a system which truly responds to the spontaneous and nuanced details of the musical material itself, and the ways in which these sounds unfold over time to create complex networks. – Jason Thorpe Buchanan

"in dysto" is an extended, mixed electroacoustic composition that explores the concept of sonic hybridity through recursive processes of structural de/re-construction. Drawing inspiration from the resonance profiles of both natural materials and synthesized resonances, the work delves into the realm of unpredictable resonant behaviors. By merging resonance and behavior, a unified concept is formed that mirrors the aesthetic and technical characteristics inherent in the electroacoustic elements, thereby resulting in an electrifying sonic experience.

Through meticulous construction and dissolution, conducted at both micro and macro levels, self-referential blocks of sonic action are harmoniously reconciled, ultimately giving rise to a dystopian landscape characterized by emergence and collision. The deliberate utilization of recursion and repetition serves to push the boundaries of the electro-acoustic material and the synergies observed during performance, while subjectively alluding to a transformative shift from utopia to dystopia.

in dysto, for amplified saxophone(s), percussion, piano - & midi - and electronics (2023)

New Ec0-existence is an electroacoustic composition for stereo or multi-channel arrays. This piece was composed and recorded at Laboratory for Immersive Arts & Technology (LIATe), the Hong Kong Baptist University and his home studio, where I sculpted noise to explore spectromorphological approaches in acousmatic music. New Ec0-existence was developed through recording sound samples, analysing recorded sound samples, and organizing and processing the samples. The 500 samples recorded feature air sounds along with non musical instruments and traditional musical instruments. One of the sounds is releasing air from balloons which produces a sustained tone in high register. All the sound recorded is then layered, timestretched, modulated to orchestrate a realistic simulation of space in nature. The piece produces a 3D space with ambisonics environment to mimic nature sound, and aims to raise awareness of the ecological crisis we are facing through the use of electronics music.

The work is selected for the 2023/24 MA/IN Festival in Rome at the Goethe Institut.
