A major land war in Ukraine, instances of genocide, and the continued rise of anti-democratic political movements pose more than a mere challenge. On the other hand, the introduction of AI to the general public is yet not fully understood. All of these are framed by the increasing disruptions of the climate crisis. No turning a blind eye - André Wilkens on making things happen

In this first episode with Donald Hyslop + Resonance FM, and as they launch the project in Belgrade on 29n June, the curators behind Liquid Becomings share more about the concept of their travelling pavilion that will go out to Europe’s diverse communities by sailing on four European rivers later in the summer. Drawing on the symbolic richness of water while underlining the urgencies it also conveys, and emphasising the fluidity of European identity itself, Liquid Becomings brings an unexpected and innovative perspective to the debate on Europe.

In partnership with Resonance FM and Espaço Agora Now, we’re broadcasting a series of programmes following the progress of Liquid Becomings: the European Pavilion 2024. 

The European Pavilion competition and financial support is provided by the European Cultural Foundation. Based in Amsterdam, it is a small but important force in the European Cultural Scene. Established as a foundational element of the European Commission and Union, it established the Erasmus exchange project, for example, which has benefited millions of young citizens. 

In the episode, we discuss the work done by the ECF with its current Director, Andre Wilkens, and hear more from some of the artists involved in the project.

This week, we’ll be hearing from two leading thinkers as they explore different but linked issues and challenges around public space.

Marleen Stikker is one of the founders and Director of DE WAAG in Amsterdam. DE WAAG future lab reinforces critical reflection on technology, develops technological and social design skills, and encourages social innovation. Marlene also founded the Digitale Stad (Digital City) in 1993 - the first virtual community introducing free public access to the Internet in Amsterdam. She leads a transdisciplinary team of designers, artists, and scientists, utilising public research and key enabling methodologies to empower people to participate in the collective design of open, fair and inclusive futures. Miguel Figueira is an award-winning architect who studied at the University of Porto’s faculty of architecture. He was responsible for the local technical office in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal (1997-2001) and for the urban design of the municipality until 2014. Miguel is the founding member of civic movement SOS Cabedelo, which advocates for the recognition of the sea and waves in territorial planning and coastal protection policies. A keen surfer and activist, his work and advocacy for oceans as public spaces is internationally recognised. He is also the author of book O Mar E a Nossa Terra. His participation on the podcast is an extract from a longer interview that will be broadcast in full.

Imagine a world where the EU could open up the Creative Europe programme to more countries, arts and culture got 5% of all national and transnational budgets and international collaborations in the arts were a focus of all national arts policies, guided by justice and equality.

In The New International - Against All Odds, IETM takes a deep dive into its work from the past years and lays a foundation for their vision of the future.

Openness to the world lies at the heart of the arts. The international dimension of culture holds immense value, as it remains one of the few common goods that transcend borders. But today, the ways in which the cultural sector engages internationally must be reinforced and reimagined to address the seismic events shaping history as we speak. Presenting a renewed vision for international collaboration in the performing arts is the very goal of this paper.

These visions are captured through the Six Axes for the New International in the Performing Arts, and IETM invites its readers to use this publication to develop their own perspectives on how art sectors across the globe should be valued, and how we can bring international collaboration in the arts to a new level.

The New International - Against All Odds

World-famous author Amitav Ghosh was born in Calcutta and studied in Alexandria, Delhi and Oxford. He is the author of numerous prize-winning novels such as The Glass Palace and Sea of Poppies. His most recent publication is called River of Smoke. His books have been translated into more than 20 different languages.

Dividing his time between Calcutta, Goa and Brooklyn, Ghosh provides a human perspective on historic events by focusing on the timeless interaction between individuals and communities. In his keynote speech, he will share his reflections on how Europe is seen in the world and how it might be seen in the future. Directly after his speech, he will be interviewed by Dutch TV presenter Twan Huys.
