Addressing the issue of Europe's image is not only about what is visible, but also about what escapes our gaze: the ideologies that underpin the European project; the fears, dreams and hopes that shape it; and the infrastructures that support our daily lives and which, paradoxically, often go unnoticed. In this new episode of the European Pavilion Podcast, we discuss the elusive images of Europe and how they might challenge us to imagine our common future. The tone however shiftes considerably once we stop looking at the images, and we decide to have a look at the news coming from it. Students play an important role in advancing towards social justice and enhancing human rights all over the world. In this episode, we have had the opportunity to talk to four young students who decided to come to Lampedusa. Not conforming with the information received by the media, they are ready to go all hands on deck in the matter to create their own story about it, participating in the different organizations and activities. What motivated them to go there? What were their expectations and what impacted them the most? Join us in this episode to know more about it!

Re:Framing migration in European media, Episode 2: Safety and the deep blue sea

On the 3rd of October 2013, a boat going from Libya to Italy sank in Lampedusa with reportedly five hundred migrants on board. The outcome was 155 survivors, 359 deaths and many more reported as missing, and later, dead. Every 3rd of October, there’s a memorial in Lampedusa to remember those involved, and to raise awareness of the  situation migrants have to face, not only to make it to safe land, but to survive once they get there.

In this episode, we will talk with 4 testimonials attending the commemoration day in 2022; one of them being a survivor himself of the shipwreck. They will let us know about the reality of being a migrant, their emotions regarding the matter, and their daily fights, always keeping a positive note asking for the European Youth to get involved and do something about it. Gabriela Ramírez is a Venezuelan storyteller researching the intersections of journalism, innovation and product strategy at Unbias the News. In this episode, she shares with us her work about detained asylum seekers in Lithuania. It runs the gamut from her personal experience used as a motivation, to her first hand involvement being in detention centers, as well as the impact the article had in deconstructing previous beliefs. Decolonisation is a word used often in theories of activism nowadays. In this episode, we talk to people who experimented with putting the theory of decolonisation into practice, specifically in media. 

How would a decolonised newsroom work? What makes it different from other newsrooms and to what would this lead? These questions led to the experiment of setting up our own Decolonised Newsroom within Re:Framing migrants in European Media. In May the Decolonised Newsroom team published their book: SHIFT! Actions for migrating perspectives. The book is a collection of practices, recommendations and stories of media makers with a migrant background, made to inspire you on how to embark on the journey of decolonising European newsrooms.

In this episode, we talk with the editorial team about their experiences participating in the Decolonised Newsroom. You could perceive it as a unique behind-the-scenes of the SHIFT! Actions for migrating perspectives publishing journey.

Re:Framing migration in European media, Episode 11: Last Episode

The great pioneer of European integration Denis de Rougemont believed in a cultural Europe, a Europe of direct participation of people beyond the nation-state. Sixty years ago the Swiss philosopher became a founding father of the European Cultural Foundation (ECF). He passionately believed in culture as a vital ingredient for Europe’s post-war rebuilding and healing. De Rougemont stated that a peaceful and democratic Europe could only last if European leaders and people work together towards an integrated Europe, anchored in a federal system. He presented the nation state as the main obstacle to a European federation and believed in a ‘Europe of the regions’: regions representing ethnic and cultural units that ensured more direct participation.

How relevant are the ideas of Denis de Rougemont on the role of Europe as a political and cultural project today, in light of the dramatic rise in nationalism in Europe these last few years? An increasing number of Member States of the EU concentrate on national priorities jeopardizing Europe as a political and cultural project. We need a new, shared idea of Europe that inspires, levers new energy and confidence in the future.

Raymond Georis, former Director of European Cultural Foundation (ECF), will reflect on the ideas of De Rougemont by reading out parts of his speech The Federalist Attitude dating from 1947. Sylvie Goulard, member of the European Parliament, will comment on this speech from a contemporary European perspective and place it in the context of current EU developments. A Q&A session with the floor will follow, including students in European studies. The event will be moderated by Vanessa Mock, EU correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in Brussels.

Beyond the Nation State - Cultures make Europe; Historic speech to Europe: Denis de Rougemont

On June 28th 2019 we launched 'Lost in Media' in de Balie, with a panel discussion chaired by Chrystal Genesis of Stance Podcast, with contributions from Moha Gerehou, Daniel Trilling, and welcoming words by editor Thomas Roueché and ECF's Vivian Paulissen.

Lost in Media: Migrant Perspectives and the Public Sphere gathers critical responses to the representations of migrants in the media in Europe through nine essays by prominent writers, artists and journalists. Ever since the 'migrant crisis' hit the headlines in 2015, migrant perspectives have been lost in mainstream media. If migrants do appear in media coverage they are represented as characters in other people’s stories, or as something other. This volume challenges this narrative of dispossession through essays by and interviews with artists, journalists and authors.

Lost in Media: Migrant Perspectives and the Public Sphere is conceived from the ‘Displaced in Media’ project and is created in cooperation with the European Cultural Foundation and published by Valiz. The book is edited by Ismail Einashe and Thomas Roueché and features contributions from Tania Bruguera, Moha Gerehou, Aleksandar Hemon, Lubaina Himid, Dawid Krawczyk, Antonija Letinić, Nesrine Malik, Nadifa Mohamed, Ece Temelkuran, Daniel Trilling, Menno Weijs, André Wilkens.

His first novel, Tokyo Cancelled, was published in 2005. Solo (2009) won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. In 2014 he published Capital, a non-fiction account of the stupendous changes engulfing New Delhi as a result of globalization. Dasgupta is currently working on a book about post-national futures.

Lara Garcia Diaz is a PHD researcher at the Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts. Since 2016, she is doing research around practices of Commoning operating in the Cultural field as a possible social practice of alternative subjectivities that clashes to the sexualized, racialized, naturalized, marginalized and precarious bodies constructed by Capital. The research is executed by an interdisciplinary team directed by sociologist Pascal Gielen at the Culture Commons Quest Office.

Timothy Snyder is Housum professor of history at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. An expert on Eastern and Central Europe and the second world war, he has written several books.

A bonus track features a reading by Rana Dasgupta of his prologue to his book Tokyo Cancelled accompanied by a piece of music composed by Lara Garcia Diaz in collaboration with musicians Francesc Fornos and Jose Galbis.
