Opening the new season with Son of Chi,

Seven Years At The Chi Factory 

Hanyo van Oosterom started the ambient collective CHI in 1983. Jacobus Derwort, a musician friend with Hanyo was the first musician to join CHI. Together, they went to the magic rock “The Kallikatsou” on the island of Patmos, Greece.
Here, Hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. He heard CHI in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. Being together at the Kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of CHI, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc.

After several years of collaborations with musicians like Willem Cramer and Michel Banabila, they decided to start together the beautiful The Chi Factory with which released (with the help of Ario Farahani and his label Astral Industries) some of the most beautiful records in the history of ambient music
Following the passing of group member J. Derwort in 2019, Hanyo van Oosterom’s legacy work brings about the next evolution of the Chi project: Son of Chi.

A compilation of 10 albums recorded for Astral Industries (UK) 2016-2022, including three bonustracks that were never release or streamed online.

Chimaera 12 ⊙ Son of Chi

“It started a few days ago…any speaker you approach starts playing grainy, barely audible dance tunes. Sound bars, bluetooth and car speakers—you tried turning them off, synching and un-synching, unplugging them, and nothing has stopped the music. At first it was easy to brush off, but it’s too frequent to not take it personally. Yesterday you walked back and forth under the grocery store speaker twenty times, and each time you did, the music was there.

Now you’re lying in bed and it's happening again. This time out of your phone speaker. You pick up your phone and a prompt arrives: BEAM ME UP? There are two buttons under the question: “Yes” and “Yes.” After a sigh and a passing moment of fear, you pick a “Yes.”

Like in a movie, everything is suddenly white and you’re floating up. As you rise, the music gets louder and more defined, you’re approaching the source—and then, a moment of clarity: this is a space rave you’ve always hoped for.

You find yourself on a dancefloor in what might be a space station and the vibe is everything you need. The beings you find yourself dancing with, whoever they might be and wherever they might be from, are your community now. They’ve all gathered here to find the same thing you have: a rave utopia you had only dreamt of. “

Distant Signals 073: Lite Drama

Leyla is an Azerbaijani producer, DJ and collector based in Rotterdam. She has been
involved with music long before becoming active as an artist, having worked in
copywriting, graphic design and curation for record labels. Currently she is 1/3 of the
Gijdillounge experimental trio and had a debut co-production on Phase Group in 2023. Her
approach to sound is strongly rooted in rhythm exploration, vocal experimentations, heavy
on sampling and ethnic influences and moods - both in production and selection.
This live mix draws inspiration from a variety of genres, using folk elements and frequently
drawing contrasts with the sound choices. A concoction of new creations and elements
from unfinished personal and collab projects, eerie at times, punchy in others. It is an ode
to the hectic, absurd and dystopian nature of the contemporary economic and social
landscape that we find ourselves in. It is very often necessary to be adept to changing the
pace. Very frequently we need to be able to ramp ourselves up, but at others we should be
able to slow down and ground. It is crucial not to lose it in the process and retain our
awareness and appreciation for beauty.
