Ever since the Swiss musicians ushered in the return of the Spaghetti Western to the world of dub with their debut album “Nitro”, they have impressed the press and audiences alike with their passion for playing, their sure instinct for sounds, their equally humorous and respectful dubification of popular hits (including Metallica’s Enter Sandman) and their immense technical skill. Riddim heard “a new sound-sphere where typical fat, stoic dub beats contrast with hand-played instruments and experimental sounds”. Jazzthetik praised the “fantastically tight band, formidable interior dynamic and supremely competent mixdowns”. Jazzthing wrote that “their psychedelic dub sound, which is occasionally interspersed by western guitar riffs and true rock solos, sounds wonderfully acoustic and analogue.” And The Wire had to admit that “it sounds cheesy and it shouldn´t work, but it does.”

Since their debut album the band have released five more studio albums, including the Clash tribute album “The Clashification of Dub”, plus a live album and a remix compilation with selective dubs by Victor Rice from Sao Paulo/Brazil.
Their new album celebrates William S. Burroughs and pays tribute his centenary, marking a new pop-cultural highlight in their work. With the official support and assistance of the William S. Burroughs Foundation in the United States, the band has succeeded in creating a heavy ambience masterpiece in 15 chapters. 

They roll through dub landscapes full of heavy reggae grooves and extraterrestrial electro sounds, carried by pumping bass lines whose hypnotic power clears the pathway to the centre and gently caresses the stomach. Floating above the dragging, instrumental reggae cut-ups that gently drift into psychedelic territory, the artfully diluted grooves, breaks and virtuoso hints, and the majestic slowness of the riddims, rises the voice of WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS, beat poet, wanderer between worlds, junky supreme and counter-culture icon. Markus Kammann aka ROBO BASS HIFI stringently sticks to his path. Umberto Echo is a Munich-based (music) writer, (dub) professor, (sound) hermeneut and multi-instrumentalist. Umberto Echo seizes the raw musical backbone of a riddim – specifically reggae – and uses it to generate multifaceted dubs in the studio as remixes or LIVE tracks.
In the past he has worked as a sound engineer for Jahcoustix, Jamaram, Headcornerstone, DS & TH, Dub INC, and has produced international reggae vocalists and deejays such as Alborosie, Junior Kelly, Luciano and Luton Fyah, as well as remixing a host of artists, including Gentleman, Seeed, Steelpulse, Sly & Robbie, Damian Marley, Stereo MCs. 
 
Nestling between digital echo chambers and analogue tape loops, his aim is to hop between Duke Ellington and King Tubby, opening up a new musical cosmos and consensus in the process. This is something he achieved with his albums DUB THE WORLD, DUB TRAIN, ELEVATOR DUBS – and it’s a feat he has effortlessly and emphatically repeated on the new album, THE NAME OF THE DUB. As with his previous releases, the decisive characteristic of the new album is the breathtaking international class and quality of the fundamental tracks, which is studded contributions from French Dub Inc. or Splendid from the Netherlands, or House Of Riddim or Horace Andy or Eek-A-Mouse or, or, or…!!! The album features a high carat line-up and not only scores points for providing an extra helping of bass, but also flirts with pop, danceability ... and format art.

Of course, Dubblestandart have been keeping a version of the dub flame alive for the last two decades, their formation coinciding with the phase in which Jamaican dub was on the way out.  Formed in 1988 as a reaction to the stagnant Austrian pop scene, the group was heavily inspired by the Black Ark, On-U Sound and Jah Shaka, infusing such dub influences within their heady blend of hardcore reggae and new wave, which soon brought them into the European public’s consciousness.  Soon, they were so in demand as to be backing Lee Scratch Perry on the Austrian stage, followed by stints with dub poet Lilian Allen and ace toaster, Dillinger.  At present, they have already issued over ten albums, collaborating with Ken Boothe, Sly & Robbie, Mad Professor, Marcia Griffiths, Chezere, Caron Wheeler (Soul To Soul) all the while working new technological dimensions into their sound, and although they have undertaken a dub tour of the US west coast, Canada, India, Russia it is fair to say that the band is worthy of a broader audience.

The Swiss musicians bow down low before Space Rock, but without bypassing pure DUB. Their new release shines with a precision that demands they be named in the same breath as the watches Switzerland is famed for. 

Swiss timepieces are renowned for their precision, and they tick along nicely even under water. The mechanics, the cogs, the striking mechanism, the chronograph movements, the repeaters, the speed-up…. The fact that the cantons of this maximum-precision country should produce ultra-chilled SLO MO Dub like this, a style that has avid fans all over the world, is something we have DS & TH to thank for. The band are known for the formidable interior dynamism of their composition skills, their classic riddim craftsmanship, the psychedelic sound of their guitars, the pounding bass lines that approach infrasound levels, the space sounds and their grandiose sound dimensions. This is dub as dub can. 

Like few other electronically influenced styles, over the years DUB has shown itself impervious and resistant to all manner of short-lived trends. Like Bud Spencer recently laconically stated in one of his rare interviews: “DUB makes the difference.” There are probably few people who – regardless of which music ghetto they inhabit – have not encountered DUB at some point. 

On the new album DEEP DIVE DUB the band dives deeper than Jaques Piccard’s team during their record-breaking dive in Trieste in the sixties. The focus of this repetition is the fusion of reggae, even though, instead of the lightness that is usually inherent in reggae, the album focuses on heavy grooves, grooves that drift off into fat, dark, mature places. With a hypnotic power, the musicians – all of whom are trained jazz instrumentalists – dive into a world of Space-Rock-Dub-Electro. On a couple of the tracks the band invited the Lucerne-based experimental vocalist Bruno Amstad (who has previously worked with John Zorn and Phil Minton) to contribute.

Neither a slave to the great Jamaican heroes of the seventies nor lost in the great wide world of electronic dub – DS & TH tread their own path, reducing and abstracting as they dive deeper and deeper. 

Irony is the sword of the disenfranchised... and so DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL will continue to roll on ¬– like the film duo they borrowed their name from – over the sliders and knobs of the mixing desks of this world!

Washington DC doesn’t have to be THAT way….!

On their debut album, Dr. Dubenstein hit listeners with discourse dub with a conspiratorial touchdown – thus easily garnering themselves the accolade of being one of the most interesting acts of their genre this year. Cushioned by a thick blanket of conspiracy theories, Derrick Parker aka Dr. Dubenstein climbs up out of his misty cave into the dazzling daylight and entrances listeners with a dreamy, sure handed mixture of roots, psychedelic spirit and electronic tinkering that guides us unerringly to an altered state. It’s almost like the soundtrack to a new world order – this is cinematic dub by people who really know what they’re doing. 

The former employee of the legendary RAS Records Labels from Washington DC gathered up some high-carat collaborators to join him in his submarine. Formidable musicians from Steel Pulse, Dub Syndicate, Roots Radics jam and conjure up heavily rolling rhythms - and rumour has it that there were even WAILERS warhorses involved in the project to add some melody. The complex balance between roots and discourse dub is an art that only few have mastered. The track Flabba’s I Pad (which refers to Flabba Holt – bassist of the legendary Roots Radics) opens with promising beats and loops that have been given lavish mechanical treatment and which are a sheer joy to hear. In big, spacious arrangements, catchy stoned tunes come zipping around the corner and unite tradition and modernism. 
Dr. Dubenstein (whose studio is in Washington DC) has delivered a deeply impressive album that sounds like an infinite loop and is simultaneously fresh, new and appealing.

Von dem Material der Mehrspurbändern ausgehend (tief im Rio Reiser -Archiv vergraben) wurden Klassiker der Kultband auf traditionelle „jamaikanische“ (ja, Reggae war schon immer Musik des Wiederstandes... , siehe Bob Marley) Mixtechnik auf überraschende Art und Weise neu interpretiert. Nur punktuell wurden durch Overdubs Spuren ergänzt und 2 Nummern des Albums verstärkt oder tiefer gelegt ('Keine Macht Für Niemand' und 'Lass Uns Ein Wunder Sein'). So hört man auf den Versionen des Straßenkampfklassikers „Keine Macht für Niemand“ die Rhythmusgruppe von Gentleman „ The Evolution“ pumpen und den aktuellen Sänger der Ton Stein Scherben Band Nicolo Rovera im Duett mit Rios Reiser und Nina Hagen sich duellieren. Das Album präsentiert sich als eine charmante Mischung aus DUB, Krautrock, Folk und Psychedelic... ein modernes Dub-Kaleidoskop aus den Scherben des Westberliner Klassenkampfes, entstanden nach der Maxime des Hauses Echobeach: Handverlesene trockene Dubs veredelt und ummantelt mit feinem analogem Staub.

Twenty-three years ago, this quotation foretold a great career for Little Axe aka Skip McDonald. The musician had already had a taste of fame with the Sugarhill Gang Backing Band / Tommy Boy Co-operations and their Hip Hop Masterpieces, writing music history along the way. Then he rolled out Little Axe and gave the blues a new, groovy face... !   Releases on legendary labels like Okeh Records, Realworld, On-U Sound  and majors like Sony, BMG, Warner, etc. followed.

On-U Sound label mastermind Adrian Sherwood has always given Skip a platform to present his entrancing blend of blues, gospel, cajun, dub and trip hop: pioneering and authentic at the same time. His sound takes the essence and sound samples from blues legends such as Howlin Wolf, Leadbelly and Son House and distils them to create musical visions that are both penetrating and highly hypnotic. Little Axe has released seven albums to date; London Blues is his eighth official album. Old mates, like Mark Stewart (Pop Group and Maffia), Doug Wimbish (bass player for Living Colour), Keith LeBlanc (drummer), Perry Melius (drummer for African Head Charge) have provided assistance – and JebLoy Nichols collaborated on writing. London Blues sticks tenaciously to tradition – to the blues – but at the same time is infused with a plethora of musical lingos (see above ….). The new album is packed with 16 songs, all of which glitter and shine with strokes of production genius and imaginative arrangements. On London Blues, Skip McDonald’s creative team is even more sophisticated and innovative than on the predecessor albums. Amazing instrumentals (Be Thankful), a touch of gospel (Deep River), splashes of trip hop with blues harp (Next Week Thursday) and delta blues meets dub (When I Rise) – the album meticulously follows a trail between Chicago and London, blending all the stepping stones to form a smooth, irresistible pathway.

In reggae, all roads lead to the “Riddim Twins”, Sly & Robbie. They’ve been revered as style-defining icons for years, and together and individually have a massive influence on the genre. They are also renowned for their willingness to shatter boundaries and experiment with sounds. Over the past decades, they have never been shy of leaping over into other genres – for instance, their timeless, super-tight production work for Grace Jones...!
Now, Sly & Robbie meet Dubmatix. The Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist got his hands on original Sly & Robbie tracks and spent months crafting this new album, Overdubbed. Dubmatix is celebrated for his out-of-the-box thinking and willingness to experiment, and the album shines with fresh ideas. 
Sly & Robbie’s tunes, which are originally without vocals, haven’t simply been dubbed: extracting the individual essence of each track, Dubmatix has added a plethora of tweaks, ideas and individuality, making his musical signature clearly audible. On some tracks, he invited vocalists, including Jay Spaker (John Brown's Body), Screechy Dan and Prince Alla, to contribute their unique style. As well as Dubmatix himself, the album features many other musicians. 

The result is an album that shines with eclectic diversity. From roots oriented tunes to dubs for the clubs, there’s a bit of everything. Dubmatix’s refreshingly playful, bass-heavy approach creates new highlights while at the same time paying deserved homage to two world-class musicians.

Dr. Israel is a dub artist from Brooklyn/ New York City. For him, dub music – originally rooted in 1960s Jamaican reggae culture – is the starting point to explore a universe of sounds, including hardcore punk,  rock, hip-hop, ambient, electronics, reggae, drum and bass. A global melting pot of a wild variety of musical styles.
Douglas Bennett aka DR. Israel (Jamaicans gave him his artist name when he lived for a while in a Niyabinghi community and became a Rastafari) discovered what he calls "non-traditional" reggae while playing guitar in punk rock bands in his native Philadelphia. His inspirations and influences include punk/reggae hybridists Bad Brains and ragga/hip-hop pioneer Boogie Down Productions as well as 1980s Reggae stars like Sly & Robbie and Black Uhuru. 

In the early 1990s he began experimenting with sampling keyboards and beats. A few years later he and others like DJ Spooky and Skiz "Spectre " Fernando earned international renown for creating "illbient," a sound that mixed jungle and hip-hop beats with otherworldly dub, ambient and avant-garde classical tones. 
"We did a bunch of very dark, very strange music," says Dr. Israel, who released his debut instrumental EP, "7 Tales of Israel," on Fernando's WordSound label in 1996.

Dr. Israel's journey has since taken him on tours around the world (U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan and has played major festivals incl. the Montreux Jazz Festival, South London’s Royal Festival Hall, Reggae on the River in California, Transmusicales in France, Fuji Rock in Japan etc.) He has released several projects, including "Black Rose Leberation", "Inna City Pressure", "Patterns of War", "Love In The Time Of Violence"  and has worked with Bill Laswell (as part of the supergroup Methods of Defiance), Lee "Scratch" Perry, The Last Poets, Rancid, Santigold, Sepultura, Laurie Anderson, Bernie Worrell, Easy Star Allstars, Alpha & Omega,  and also with the  rapper and Wu-Tang Clan affiliate Killah Priest.

"The one thing that I'm most thankful for is that I've been able to touch elbows with my heroes," he says.
"I don't want to do traditional reggae because there are a lot of people already doing that. I don’t think I could ever create a straight-ahead pop track. I'm not the kind of person who's big on writing love songs, but 
I am able to create a song partly based on the 1982 collaboration between punk icons the Clash and beat poet Allen Ginsberg. The Clash song to me was about a certain era in London. I wanted to paint the same picture and song structure, but I wanted to paint it in Brooklyn."

"I create and produce music a bit like Bruce Lee. He came from the traditional Kung Fu and merged / combined for his martial arts discipline Tae-kwon-do, and other traditional martial arts to an effective system. That's the basic idea of combining styles."

Over 25+ years the name "Up, Bustle & Out" has been synonymous with freedom in terms of their eclectic music productions, sound experimentations as well as a very specific social and ecological mindset. They are Bristol-based and the original representatives of the first generation of Ninja Tune artists alongside Coldcut, DJ Food, Cinematic Orchestra, 9 Lazy 9, DJ Vadim and The Herbaliser. Up, Bustle & Out released 5 popular albums and 11+ EP 12" singles on Coldcut's pioneering and internationally-respected label. Ninja Tune quickly became a cult urban movement amongst the cosmopolitan youth - one that included fashion, radio shows, VJs, books, videos, turntable delights, club nights and festivals - especially throughout Europe, the USA and Japan. UB&O became a unique act on the label’s compilation albums by including more songs than any other artists. 

The sound of the band - which comprises Rupert Mould, David Fell, Flamenco guitarist Cuffy El Guapo, Latin percussionist/singer Eugenia Knight, and DJ Dave Cridge - is shaped by the period in which turntablism, global thinking and sample collages became the roots of the new underground, forming a modern freestyle cut & paste Hip Hop and Jazz. The band presented their unique take on this direction with albums “The Breeze was Mellow (As the Guns Cooled in the Cellar)” (1994); "One Colour Just Reflects Another (1996); "Light Em' Up, Blow Em' Out" (1997) - all of which topped musical mag reviews such as NME, Time Out New York and Wire. Breakbeats sourced from rare funk records, cuts and scratches from the turntable, such were the driving forces that underpinned club music. UB&O were inspired by the heavy bass productions of the Bristol Sound and collaborated early on with names such as Smith & Mighty. It was the solid and earthy double bass of Portishead's Jim Barr and the Latin soul & funk rhythms that dominated the band’s work like a leitmotif. 

The Hamburg label ECHO BEACH, through its sub-label "Collision Cause of Chapter 3", which has already released four albums and a compilation of the band’s work since 2007, is celebrating the sound anew with an extravagant series of compilation releases...!!!

Of course, Dubblestandart have been keeping a version of the dub flame alive for the last two decades. Formed in 1988 as a reaction to the stagnant Austrian pop scene, the group was heavily inspired by the Black Ark, On-U Sound and Jah Shaka, infusing such dub influences within their heady blend of hardcore reggae and new wave, which soon brought them into the European public’s consciousness and as a kind of  „European“ version of the famous DUB SYNDICATE.  Soon, they were so in demand as to be backing Lee Scratch Perry, dub poet Lilian Allen, Dillinger, Ari Up, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths, Chezere and orthers. 

Well,  Austria´s / Viennas´s finest moments in dub working and collaborating with the new technological dimension of modern dub : Paolo Baldini from Italy. 
Baldini´s stunning excursion into deep dub, chilling dub and dubble-tough dub will reach the DubFiles into perfection @ DUB ME CRAZY. 
	Paolo Baldini’s handling of this mission has been exemplary: his production and remixing skills are pleasingly individualistic, retaining plenty of originality and professionalism without seeming stoic, dull or contrived. His collaborations with Mellow Mood, Hempress Sativa, Dub Fx and others are showing faith of what DUB is living for. Since 2007 Paolo Baldini works under the top level name „Alambic Conspiracy“ and became world class dub extraordinary performer, bass player, mixologist, producer and provocateur...!

With this Courtney Jones, Lore Grutschnig and Ali Tersch (Drummer of the band Dubblestandart and Supermax) are welcoming you to their unique blend of Steel Pan and Kalimba music. The first steelpans where invented in the 1930s in Trinidad, designed from the tradition of rebellion against the colonial powers in Trinidad & Tobago.

More than 3000 years back dates the earliest version of the Kalimba, also known as Mbira/ Thumb Piano. However, those u are about to hear on this production where handcrafted in today’s Austria. Communicating with the mighty sounds of Courtney Jones Steel Pan & the fragile sensitive layers of Lore’s flute, the Kalimba merges the old and new world with its distinctive sound. 

The environment in which these musicians live and work is Vienna, in the middle of Europe, an austere ancient city in transition. A multicultural “market place” set alive by its multi ethnical inhabitants and their wish to respect the roots of their individual culture as they are melting with the colorful life of 21st centuries Europe.

 In respect to Courtney Jones, who passed away during this production, Ali Tersch (aka Ale X)  finalized the production, conscious of the responsibility to keep the vibes authentic and the music well produced, just as Courtney would have loved it.

An album that fuses “authentic world music” but also modern beat, hip hop and dub 
On this, the band’s first album, the focus is firmly on an amalgamation of so called world music,  with the genre’s elementary electronic facets. They grab reggae flavoured by the roots in their inimitable way and build a varied cocktail of roots, soundscapes, hip hop and dub.
