We brought in a professional drummer to perform each of the swells and on recording day we covered a wide variety of cymbal shapes and sizes.

Swell is divided into 2 parts: natural and designed.

The natural collection has recordings that are unmodified from their original performances and was created to produce clean, musical, natural sounding performances.

The designed collection uses samples based on the natural recordings that have been transformed into entirely new and different sounds using heavy processing and layering. It was created to produce interesting design and transition sounds quickly and easily.

In addition to the carefully recorded sounds we have created a truly useful and flexible kontakt instrument. This instrument ties the mod wheel to an entire matrix of effect parameters that you can manipulate in real time for instant complexity.

Our hospital ambiences were recorded during one extensive day long shoot where we were granted access to one of the nations top medical campuses.  

There are surprisingly few "hospital machines" making beeping noises at any given location, which gives these sounds the flexibility to be used in any institutional building

Rodeos and horse ranches aren't what they used to be.  These recordings are from before the times of PAs pumping pop music to the crowd.  

Years ago we rolled out to the rodeo with full access, a portal DAT recorder, and a determination to catch every angle we could take a mic to.  

After the rodeo we went to a local horse ranch and kept on rolling.  

These recordings stand the test of time, and show the rodeo and ranch in a way that makes you remember the way they should sound.

Texas Rodeos and Ranches

Hockey crowds are different from other pro sporting crowds.

The NHL mandates that the music has to stop during play, which leaves every gasp, oh, and cheer free and clear of PA induced pollution.  

Our crowds were recorded over the course of an entire season and were done with unprecedented access.  Entire Games were recorded from various locations and perspectives.  

the end result is an immersive sound set that has been carefully edited and fully tagged with metadata.  Finding the elements you need is simple and direct.

Signal Return is a performable kontakt instrument and soundset designed to create a wide variety of interesting and textured sounds.

All of the source material comes from recordings of various devices feeding back into themselves either electrically or acoustically. No software based speaker emulators or distortions were used in the creation of these sounds.

We covered all of the classic forms of feedback including an SM58 through a PA, an electric guitar through a tube amped miked with an SM57 and a Royer 121, a set of Sony headphones feeding into themselves, and a pair of Uniden walkie talkies with both mics open too close to one another.

We also did a series of line level loops with devices like a sansamp bass driver DI, a Danelectro Honeytone amp, and a Roland Cube amp. The line level loops were also run through guitar pedals and pitch/delay plugins to further bend and distort the looped signals.

Each of the samples are fully embedded with soundminer metadata. The metadata also includes spectrograms of each individual sound to make combing through the sounds that much quicker. Spectrograms created using iZotope RX3, available from iZotope.com

From all of this the raw material we built a cool Kontakt interface filled to the top with cool sounds and noises. Check out the demos and the user guide for a detailed look.


Signal Return

The EXPLNR sounds series is a collection of sfx libraries designed and produced with the classic 2d animated explainer video in mind.

These sounds will give quick and useful coverage to the common moves used in this style. Vol 2 is a custom paper and mechanical transition library – filled with pleasant clicks and sides designed to push all of your graphics along neatly and cleanly – all custom designed with the playfulness and clean edges required to match the explainer video style. To help cover repetitive visual movements, multiple iterations of each sound are included.

The Bell 407 and Bell 429 are some of the most ubiquitous aircraft in the modern sky.
 
These two models have been used by police, news, emergency rescue crews, hospitals, private individuals, and militaries the world over since 1996. They are fast, agile, comfortable and flexible.
 
We were granted exclusive access to the airport used to train 407 and 429 pilots in the hometown of Bell’s corporate headquarters – Ft Worth, Texas. This airport is a purely industrial airport, meaning that no commercial passenger jets fly in or out of it. This reduction in air traffic provided excellent recording conditions.
 
During our time on the tarmac we captured pristine movements like starts, hovers, aways, returns, spin ups and spin downs. We recorded interior and exterior on the tarmac, and captured many beautiful long tails in and out. There was no rush, and we took our time getting what we needed.
 
Once we had the tarmac coverage we needed, we headed over to the training area a few miles away. In this spot pilots in training practice flight maneuvers like hovers, turns, and the very tricky autorotation landing. To do an autorotation, the main engine is shut off while the helicopter is in flight, and the freewheeling rotors keep turning purely on wind friction. Once safely on the ground, the helicopters would spin back up and take off again. It is an amazing thing to see and to record.
 
Each exterior recording was made with a small array of mics that were time and phase-aligned in post to produce the fullest and cleanest representation of the sounds possible. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

This is a set of football pad impacts and foley movements that were recorded outdoors in very quiet conditions.  These pads were very worn in and used, so they have a very unique characteristic to the sounds they make.  Capturing the pads outdoors kept the natural reflections and context of how the are typically used intact – essential for helping them to sit correctly in any mix.

Movements captured include slams and impacts, drags in the dirt, helmet clacks, and impact with grunts, along with loads of general rattling and jingling, with dozens of iterations.

Also included is a set of designed impacts that use the source material to create a set of larger than life impacts that can easily be spotted in for quick coverage of tackles, hits, and line of scrimmage snaps. 

Over 20 minutes of edited football foley is included here, and all of it is beautiful.

Surge is not your typical water sound library.

These are not splashes, sprinkles, splatters, or swimmers sloshing around.

These are beautifully textured, powerful liquid propulsion sounds created to drench, soak, and saturate your projects with a different level of aquatic force. Its about momentum, energy and power – driving forces both over and under the water.

The elements of Surge were beautifully recorded with high end mics both above and below the water’s surface. A variety of beautiful swirls, pressurized blasts, gurgles, propeller flutters and passbys form the foundation of this collection.

From that source, the team designed massive water bursts, ghostly ship trails, heavy whirlpools, deep water implosions, submersions, dopplers and spray fields.  This is a collection of highly designed sounds that are perfect for underwater ships, creatures, projectiles, and hydrated environments.

We had a rare opportunity to record baseball crowds with a full access media pass for what turned out to be a deep playoff run.

The recording setup was a very unique quad rig that had Microtech Gefell M930 large diaphragm condensers in the front and either small diaphragm condensers or PZM mics in the rears.

The huge crowd experienced every emotion over the several games that were recorded.  The home team got blown out of a game, they came back and won a game in dramatic fashion, and then dominated a game from start to finish.  Players made huge defensive plays, hit massive home runs, and even got ejected from the game. Some games the roof was open, and others it was closed, which altered the sound quite a bit.

After the series ended we went through the painstaking task of sorting through and editing dozens of hours of recordings.

We separated clips into broad groups of cheers, boos, idles, callouts, chants, and other reactions.  Then we drilled in deeper to sort each group by intensity and to continue to prune out any elements that didn’t belong.

We removed copyrighted music, team specific chants, annoying people, audio blemishes, and anything else that stood out in an unpleasant way.

This is a perfect library for film, TV and game work that needs big stadium crowds.

Conjure

In films and documentaries there are often images of people in spaces speaking to other people, who are listening attentively.

The recordings of the person doing the talking are pristine from the set. The recordings of the rest of the room don’t exist. Room tones of empty spaces don’t possess movement and life that your soundtracks require for these situations.

Libraries are a natural place to capture these environments, and so a high quality stealth kit made from a pair of Sanken CUB 01s discreetly placed from a backpack onto empty tables in various libraries. We also got access to a university campus right at the end of finals week where we recorded out in the open with a pair of MKH50s in ORTF. We captured an entire class taking a test, as well as various other lightly and sparsely populated spaces in and around campus.
 
Locations captured included:

    5 different public libraries
    multiple perspectives per library
    6 locations on the UNT campus
    1 class quietly taking a written test

The end result is a beautiful set of recordings of quiet spaces that are still filled with texture and movement.

Quiet Spaces

The Porsche 911 GT3 is not a typical race car.

With engine, transmission, air intake and exhaust all situated in the rear of the vehicle under a large wing, this pure driving machine has sonic characteristics very different from many familiar racing vehicles. Its exhaust note is deep and throaty and the transmission is snappy at speed.

The Porsche 911 GT3 library is a series of recordings that were made on a track just outside of Houston on media day for the Effort race team. These are 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Rs that race on the Pirelli World Challenge series. Each car has a naturally aspirated, water cooled, four valve 4.0 liter flat six cylinder Porsche engine. These cars create 500 horse power from the factory and race with E10 fuel. The transmission is a Porsche six gear racing box with sequential shift mechanism. 

Porsche 911 GT3 Demo

The Honda VTX 1300 is distinctive cruiser motorcycle.

Its 1300cc displacement is right in the sweet spot between the zippier 750 models and the massive 1800 road warriors.  This particular one was equipped with a set of custom Vance and Hines Big Shots exhaust pipes early in its life, giving it a distinctive and throaty note that can be heard up and down the highway.  The VTX line is also known for its distinctive transmission, which gives a meaty ‘clunk’ with every shift.

This library is a set of recordings that were made using a combination of onboard and exterior mics at a variety of useful speeds, as well as free running on the highway.  Its a smaller set, but very distinctive and useful.

Comprised of various loops pops and decays, this collection spans the range of what a needle on an empty track can sound like.
