The Real Thing

Johnny’s on the Water was learned from the singing of Appalachian folk singer Jean Ritchie (1922 - 2015). It twists the archetypal story of a woman left behind by a sailor, the singer rejecting grief and finding empowerment: ‘if he can live without me, I can live without him’. This line became the heart of our arrangement. 

We created this arrangement in residence at Snape Maltings in 2022. In slowing down the tempo, destabilising the rhythm, and replacing Ritchie’s sparse dulcimer accompaniment with an ensemble of modular synths, guitars and affected strings, we explore the way that the open sea warps our understanding of time and distance. The trumpet solo was played by Lissie Daly, a tireless campaigner for women in brass.

“Run, Get Drunk & Fall in Love Again”  is the perfect soundtrack to escape the mundane, get drunk at a bar, and fall in love all over again. On their LP, the musicians stray further from the familiar jangle-pop guitars, blending noise rock, techno, post-punk, spoken word, tenderness, irony, anger, and love. With angular melodies and cascading drums, ‘We Woke The Monster’ is a loud condemnation of every terrible relationship you've ever had. The latest single from Bristol based Shoun Shoun loads up their genre defying playstyle to deal with the effects of gaslighting and emotional abuse. It talks about narcissistic people that have an inflated sense of self-importance, a lack of empathy and use charm and deceit to manipulate the people around them. Affected people begin to question their own sanity and reality.
‘We Woke The Monster’ is about waking up to this reality and walking away.
