Who Was Seo Seo-pyeong?
Seo Seo-pyeong was originally German, born as Elisabeth Johanna Shepping (1880–1934). She lived with her mother without a father, but when her mother left alone for America, Shepping was raised by her maternal grandmother. At the age of twelve, she traveled to America to be reunited with her long-missed mother. Having lived in extreme poverty, Shepping understood well the hearts of the poor. This background became the foundation for her life as a nurse dedicated to helping the needy.
While in college, she heard about Jesus from a friend and converted from Catholicism to Christianity. Like Jesus, who lived among the poor and persecuted, Shepping desired to live that kind of life herself. When she came across an announcement recruiting a nurse missionary to be sent to Korea, she decided to embark on the long journey to a poor and desolate land as both a nurse and a missionary. Upon arriving in Korea, she became known as Seo Seo-pyeong...
