One and a half years after his successful debut EP ‘You Like Jazz?’ on Salin Records, Michael Diamond comes back with another fresh and powerful release. Possessing a strong jazz feel albeit cloaked in the veil of a more modern electronic sound, the concept EP ‘Silk Road’ marks the next level for the 22-year-old as he dissolves any boundaries between genres, creating a symbiosis of sounds and textures to take you to places only he knows.

We still enjoy remembering how we celebrated the release of his ‘You Like Jazz EP’ back in January 2020, Oxford, where Michael Diamond and Christophe Salin DJed back-to-back alongside live improvisation from saxophonist Alex Wilson. It was at that special weekend that Michael played some of his latest ideas to us over a coffee in his student
room. They were the first versions of ‘Through Ivory Gate’ and ‘Adrift Penitent Moors (feat. Alex Wilson)’. Michael later wrote ‘Adrift Corrosive Waters (feat. Alex Wilson)’, ‘Glistening Currents’ and ‘Lullaby of Birdland’ especially for this EP and Salin Records. He decided to team up with his friend Alex Wilson again to provide some serenading sax lines to bring the whole story to life.
‘Through Ivory Gate’ pays homage to Michael’s Indian heritage. Inspired by the theme of Asian culture and the rest of the EP, Michael’s close friend Áine Kim Kennedy crafted an abstract poem to be read alongside listening to the music. It is a beautifully enigmatic verbalisation of the journey the EP intends to take you on.
Finally, Daria Salin embodied the music and poem through her painting. The final result is a marriage of artforms; Music, Poetry and Art, all to be absorbed together as a holistic experience.

The water rippled and glistened under the sun as if there were a thousand diamonds hidden below the surface. Amidst the rapids, small amphibious animals and colourful fish swam happily with the tide, finding new homes to settle in along the way. Back on land, many locals came down to the river to bathe or swim each day; its depths provided a perfect place to meet, talk and bask in the crystal clear waters...

Ore Yèyé O is the fruits of a collaboration between New Zealand producer Aron Ottignon and Puerto-Rico-based vocalist and Yoruba priest Otura Mun, better known as Ìfé. A meeting in 2017 led them to exchange ideas and begin jamming together, with Aron then editing and arranging the tracks before Mun laid over his lyrics. The result is a song that is a salute and prayer to Yoruban deity Oshùn, with Mun's vocals lifting the listener into spiritual spheres whilst Aron's piano chords unfold and balance harmonically below. Alongside the original track, three producers take on remix duties, including BBE's Julien Dyne, Ziggy Zeitgeist and TFGC affiliate Lucas Croon, who propels the original incantations into hypnotic depths.

Froman - Broken Computer [CLIPP185]

Froman is an electronic artist based in Galway. He humbly describes himself as producer of smooth lofi house, breakbeat and future garage, but i’d hazard to argue he’s more like a young Irish vibe god (possibly Aengus, the deity associated with love, youth and poetic inspiration). Why the lofty accolades you may enquire, dear reader? For starters, in case you were born without ears - figuratively speaking (!!!!) (Please save your hate tweets people that know people that know someone born with Anotia/Microtia) lemme break it down for you. You see, Froman produces lofi like Neo sees ones and zeros in the matrix. He has an innate ability to reduce tunes down into their pure essence of vibedom. Witness here his “Broken Computer” release comprising four tracks of simplest pleasure. This is a guy that doesn’t ask himself “does this track need another pad?” (the answer is always NO). And if there ever was for some inexplicable reason an inkling of the urge to layer another clap or snare drum, there is no evidence present of such artistic struggle happening within or around any of these tunes. What there is though is an abundance of “old-school” energy. Whether it be the Style Wars era commentary versus filter funk of “Crime in the City”, school-wagging sass over the lazy groove of “OK I’ll Go”, slam poetry musings floating over a lonely slow mo TR909 on “The Art of Rhyme” or frozen beach horizon backgrounds and jackin upfront beat of “Nothing Much”, these tracks transport listeners to bygone times. Like your own personal Delorean. Some might say these sounds already sit in and of themselves in an outdated era. Obsolete. Like the fragmented files found on a broken computer. But a bit of nostalgia couldn’t hurt getting us through what has been a shit show start to the new decade. And as we draw the curtain on the truly bizarre year of 2020, we’re reminded gently that the journey is still the kick.
