Crabapple Drone 120916, Wingecarribee. A continuing project of listening to tree drones created by massings of European honey bees in newly flowering trees, as seasonal microtones emerge in an austral temperate climate. This drone body-host-generator-pollinizer is an old crabapple tree, a northern hemisphere immigrant, in the Illawarra Highlands, Australia. Vocalising resident birds and other ambient sonics layer the sounding.

The 2017 iteration of the old crabapple tree in full floral bloom when it transforms into an aural drone hosting thousands of honeybees. Farmers call these trees 'pollinisers', planted to feed bees and attract them to fruit trees to continue the free pollinising work. In its spring flowering zone, this tree becomes a multibody, multispecies drone, hosting and sheltering bees, songbirds, newly emerged butterflies, and innumerable insects. Peak florescence; peak drone: 23-24 September 2017. September 24: @ 30C, a new maximum September temperature event since records began 1939(BOM 2017).

'Tawny Twilight Calling', 2013

This is a short extract of the antiphonal call of the eastern whipbird, recorded in the Illawarra highlands (Wingecarribee district), Australia.

Local birds perform two variations of this call (the whip) and response (following notes). 

Solo birds have been seen and heard performing both parts, which contradicts the normative story that the lead is always a male (whip) answered by a female bird. More later.

Eastern Whipbird

This is a house of soundings. Situated sound and aural shards. Of listening in the pause. For listening in the pause.

Soundings are field recordings: a form of wit(h)nessing practice impelled by the astonishing more-than-human world in my planetary backyard.  

Many of these recordings are from the Illawarra region of New South Wales (on top of the escarpment in the water catchment country, and below, where the downhill freshwater meets the Tasman Sea). Many are from the 'farm' where I have lived for years, and its remnant forest patches, peat bogs, and temperate rainforest. Here, forever, in the First Peoples' Countries of Wodi Wodi Elders and custodial knowledge holders, and the communities of the Yuin Nation. 

Others are from heart and kin country in the North Queensland tropics, from Gurambilbarra Wulgurukaba and Bindal home lands, seas, airwaves, and more. Many find their way to other ornithological archives and sites of shared listening.

In this age of the Anthropocene-in the-making (Yusoff), I take nothing - no song, no presence, no bird or tree, no wind, no familiar seasonal pattern - for granted. All are in flux with a transforming climate writ local, particular and capricious in effect and future becoming.
