Echospace present the secondary edition of Variant's Sequential Sleep, a beautiful complement to the original, but at the same time, entirely unique. Taking the foundation and elements of [Volume One] (SEQ 001CD, 2016) and stripping it back into the ether; dubbed out and treated from reel-to-reel tape creating an almost vaporous atmosphere all of its own - deep, organic and mystical. Utilizing a combination of purely analog mixing, a variety of field recording methods and dubbing it in real time - hands on the controls, no edits, no computer, just the ghostly harmonics and shivery bi-products you would come to expect of obsolete vintage electronics. The analog warmth has never sounded so sweet, mixed at antique modulation in Ann Arbor. Double CD housed in a beautiful retro matte finished eco wallet with UV coat.

The 7th instalment of our In:Focus Series places the spotlight on a very specific point in time - The Early Deepchord records years.

In the late 1990s the Deepchord record label was co-founded by Rod Modell & Mike Schommer in Detroit, Michigan. After just four years and achieving far more success than initially anticipated, DeepChord Records wound down operations. For this In Focus we want to concentrate specifically on the work that Rod and Mike did before they disbanded.

Across the Dub Techno scene the name Deepchord carries the highest of gravitas. Elite level quality, and considered by many to be, alongside Basic Channel, the blueprint of the genre.

So much has been written about Deepchord over the years, and we're not here to repeat what's been said (you can check out a great interview with Mike from a few years ago here - inn8.net/interview-with-mike-schommer-deepchord/ ), we're here to celebrate the music and we hope that through this session we have done that.

We open our series with an artist we have been huge fans of for well over a decade - Luke Hess.

Born in 1980 in Metro Detroit and subject to the city's mid-90's warehouse parties, Luke Hess has harnessed a deep appreciation for electronic music and the expression of the underground movement.  His background in mathematics and engineering has given him a scientific approach to the dance-floor, using frequencies, tones, and soundscapes to transform surroundings and mood.

This incredible mix was recorded just a few weeks ago at Kenneth Christiansens "Dub Nation" event at About Blank, Berlin. Luke showcases his skills throughout, with tight, precise blends that he's made his signature. We are truly honoured to have one of our favourite ever artists open this series.

The Frontier 001 - Luke Hess

Alastair is the man behind Lempuyang, a UK-based label established in 2021 and deeply focused on dub techno sounds.

Among other artists, Ranges co-founder Roberto aka Hydergine first made an appearance on LPY-03, as part of a split release with Steve O'Sullivan under his Bluetrain alias. Hydergine is due to feature again this November on lempuyang's 3rd year anniversary compilation, alongside some seriously heavyweight names in the deep/dub techno realm. 

Lempuyang and Ranges labels are quite related in their sound palette. Testament to Roberto & Alastair's shared tastes, no less than 11 different artists have released material through both Ranges & Lempuyang.

The next Far Blue concept is created by Sam Goku, a multifaceted DJ and producer, whose music we’ve been admiring for a while. In his mixes, the Chinese-German artist blends music from different styles and genres, while keeping the listener attracted to a coherent and ever surprising musical journey.  This unique and distinct sound comes through beautifully in his interpretation of Far Blue.

“I recorded this mix right after i came back from my asia tour. maybe it reflects the serenity i feel after returning from an inspiring trip - i felt very unrushed while recording it. what i also took home from this trip is a renewed fascination for textures of all kinds, which gave this mix its name. i hope you enjoy :)”
