Ecid is a kamikaze visionary: an artist with an all or nothing approach to every aspect of his art and life. Ambitious almost to a fault with an “us against them” DIY mentality, Ecid has self-booked, self released, and self-made his own movement. Ecid doesn’t try to sell you on any one way of life, he only sells you on the idea that you can live however you want. A Minneapolis native and a participant in the Twin Cities hip hop scene since 2003, all three of Ecid’s most recent releases have charted on the College Music Journal’s Hip Hop Top 40 chart. Collaborating with the likes of Eyedea, Awol One, and Kristoff Krane along the way, his smashing new album, Werewolf Hologram, is destined to make even bigger waves.
Ecid pushes the limits of sampling, it’s not so much what he samples, it’s what he does with every note. Pitch shifting and chopping every sample to the point of no return, slapping together psych-rock vocal chops with 808 booms and hand claps, then adding more layers of drum breaks, and echo heavy guitars. Inspired by the duality in humanity, Werewolf Hologram tackles heavy thought provoking topics that really dig into your head. The hooks explode: layer upon layer of melodies evoking color and nostalgia. Ecid brings you into a new world, his world. With a knack for slap stick, smarty pants, one liners that make us smile while shaking our heads in disbelief. His voice is full of charm and just enough personal triumph and tragedy so you believe every word. "The concept behind this track is more of an aspirational idea v.s. a concrete statement. I was feeling like I needed to give myself a pep talk when I wrote this and remind the people around me that it's going to be okay no matter what ugly turns our world takes...Just keep doing dope shit.

One of my favorite things about this track was collaborating with my roommate at the time, Charlie Rauh. He's an awesome dude and extremely talented guitar player. We've now made a handful of really dope beats together but this was the first one. We just started messing around, sampling his guitar through some effects on an Organelle routed into Ableton Live and in a matter of minutes we had a foundation to build on. Essentially the first verse is what he and I made together and then from there I built the hook, verse 2 and the rest of the track from recycled elements of what we initially laid down so it evolves throughout."

  At first glance most would think a skinny, blue-eyed hipster looking dude in a flannel with obnoxious Nike’s to match, would be in a post-electro indie-band. But this is the 90’s for the third time and one of rap’s most exciting new voices, ECID, is not your average newsstand heartthrob. In 2012, with the release of Werewolf Hologram, he saw his sound realized in a major scope. The album reached #20 on the College Music Journal’s Top 50 Hiphop Albums of 2012 list among many other accolades. It was an album fueled by life’s harsh kicks to the family jewels and a newly found passion for heat yoga which completely changed his creative DNA. ECID was shiny and new again.

  Embracing the chaos of his artistic evolution, 2013 is shaping up to be a busy year for Ecid. With a new studio album, Pheromone Heavy nearly finished, he is set to release a companion EP, Post Euphoria as a sneak peek of things to come. Realizing his best asset as an artist is himself, the songs are more vulnerable, yet more playful than ever. A hopeless-romantic at heart, Ecid has finally found a way to bring his true charm & unique creative quirks to the surface, making you root for him that much more. His new style is matched by sexier beats, marrying big synth lines with choppy samples. It is tailor-made for blasting out of a stolen Mazda louder than a blow horn attached to a stadium sized amplifier.

01- ECID - Burn Everything

Minneapolis native Jason Mckenzie, an only child raised by a single-mom, had a lot of time to himself growing up. But he was never bored. Ever. He started writing songs at age 13, released his first “album” before his 18th birthday and hasn’t stopped since. Released earlier this year, Post Euphoria volume 1 brought Ecid’s true charm to the surface with sexier beats and punchlines on steroids (and kush).

 Amidst the chaos of artistic evolution, Post Euphoria 2 exploits the best parts of Volume 1 while preparing us for the upcoming full-length Pheromone Heavy. After spending the first half of the year training to be a yoga instructor Ecid bought a MOOG, stopped quantizing and found a way to make songs with a more human approach. Minimalistic drums and urgent melodies give his percussive vocals and no-fuck’s-given personality room to breathe. “Communication Abuse”, a snarky response to society’s infatuation with their phones and themselves, continues ECID’s agenda to challenge the “pack” mentality. ECID lives and dies by the dream and Post Euphoria 2 is what happens when you finally catch that elusive carrot.
