It is highly recommended that this track be listened to with headphones. It's far more "transporting" for lack of a better word. I spent a great deal of time on complimentary rhythmic structure in the left and right channels, and the stereo separation in general.

I've been playing Didgeridoo for a long time in short.  Though this is the first actual recording I've done with it where it is the main featured instrument throughout. After years of people asking me to do a full Didgeridoo based album like this, the least I could do is offer up at least one song after all this time.

For me the Didgeridoo is a truly sacred instrument. Obviously I'm not Aboriginal, nor Australian in any way. I have had a deep connection with this instrument from the first time I heard it at the age of 13. It was a featured "Hearts Of Space" radio program one Sunday night. I found it deeply moving to the core, like it had woken something up in me that was laying / waiting dormant deep inside. At least that's how I'm able to describe it now that I'm much older. It was a bit confusing back then. But I knew then, that I must learn to play this instrument and take it seriously.

It is an instrument I have such a deep rooted respect for, as well as the culture that created it.  I would never do anything that would remove the element of that respect. That perhaps is why it has taken me so long to finally do a recording like this.

A collaboration between Beau & Gary James (aka: Black Bear), Anishnaabe storyteller, artist, flute maker, musician and world traveler.

Who Taught The Birds To Sing, is a mesh of the traditional and the modern. The electronic based composition & production style is designed to fit and uplift this traditional story, while not intruding or stepping over it. It is designed to be a meditation & prayer for the things that matter in the world.

Working on this song was what I would consider a "beautiful challenge". I encourage all listeners to pay attention closely to what Gary is saying & take it seriously. As a species we are causing rapid and disgraceful irresponsibility in the name of economy and an insatiable appetite for more. All the while forgetting about the future generations & the embarrassing legacy being left behind. The real purpose of this song was to get people thinking about that, and what you can do in your own life to consider how you impact "7 generations" from now.

The final track to close out "A Perfect Gradient Sky". It features the truly beautiful flute work of Laura Nashman on Sliver flute. 

This song is like watching the sun go down after a wonderful day. Everything gets quiet, the waves are flowing gently on the shore, the crickets are coming out, and the animals are going to sleep for the night. Soon you will be too.  But don't forget to come back to this place often.  In the modern world, we don't spend nearly enough time in these places.

This was a wonderful track to work on. The entire creative process of composition from beginning to end had the feeling of being hurled through space at an increasingly high velocity. Yet somehow, it was very calming at the same time. Perhaps it will give the same transporting feeling to you, the listener. That is my sincere hope.

Tetrahedron (Pre Release Version)

The concept of Sila came after having a very close call while out on the back trails. I especially enjoy hiking in the Winter months for it's serenity and stark landscapes. I prefer to be alone while doing so, and the very late hours are the best as you are truly alone with your thoughts and natural surroundings. A violent storm was potentially on it's way and moving in fast, and I was already fairly far out at very late hours. As the intense wind quickly became violent and the barometric pressure dropped, so did my blood sugar (I am severely Type 1 Diabetic).  Rapidly and without warning, much like the storm itself. I was very fortunate to have made it back. All the while, even while it was happening, there was a communication happening with something much larger than me. I got many things out of this experience. Only one of which served as a reminder once again, that nature is not a force to be meddled with. We humans are on such an extreme level destroying our own home. 

I chose the name Sila, as it is a traditional Inuit name for "all that is around you, all of which is alive". And that would be everything if you are paying attention! Some here in the West might choose to call this God. But if there ever was a time where I felt like I had a deeply personal encounter with what the Inuit refer to as Sila, it was this. On a very visceral level.

We had a series of extreme Winter storms that month, and I took the time to record some of them. I wanted to give the effect of walking in a storm. Though I tried to record myself actually walking through the deep snow during storms on the back trails, it came out mostly as noise.  I recorded myself walking through snow separately on a lovely sunny Winter day, and mixed it in with the storm recordings. This gave the right effect.

Sila (Pre Release Version)

Shinrin Yoku is the Japanese practice of "Forest Bathing". Taking time to go out and commune with nature, solitary, often focusing on the breath & listening carefully while walking. It is a modern way to reintroduce the human species to the nature that surrounds us, and once made up most of the planet.

This track is meant to invoke a feeling of Shinrin Yoku. It is divided into 2 parts, but meant to be played back to back. One being contemplative as an introduction, and the second part more rhythmically structured. 

Part I is relaxing and contemplative. Still, but with movement of the rain storm and breath of the droning Didgeridoo. Part I focuses on a thunderstorm, an incredibly electric storm I had the privilege of recording a couple years ago on my porch with my field recorder. I also mixed in various bird recordings I’ve done over the years as well as a sample of the elusive “fabulous echo bird”. I have no idea what kind of bird it is actually. They come to the back of the yard certain times of the year, probably migrating through. When they make their call it always has this fabulous echo quality no matter what the conditions outside. So it seems a fitting name for an unknown bird with a fantastic call. I finally had the right composition to use it!

Part II picks up the pace a bit. For those who have never been to the forest for any length of time, it is not as quiet as is portrayed in the movies. Different times of day, it can be extremely vibrant with different noises and a real sense of rhythm behind it. Living rhythm of course! Birds competing, insects buzzing, woodpeckers banging on trees, and the scurrying of many various animals as you come into their space. For this reason, I added faster played Didgeridoo over a simple beat for the feeling of breath, movement and living rhythmic structure in Part II. In my experience, a longer intentionally meditative hike through the forest is never like a relaxing sitting meditation in any way. But more an experience of the many cycles of life all around you. During this time, you are a small part of that cycle and nothing more. You get the opportunity to witness other forms of life and communication other than your own. If everyone did something like this every week, we’d probably have a lot less habitat destruction in the world. Simply because it would be more appreciated on a larger level, and nobody would stand for destroying it just for profit. In fact, most of my music is based in this philosophy and my long term goal is to infuse this sort of mindset into people using music as a conduit.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! From The Eclipse Project to you. Focusing this year only on the gratitude for what is in your life. Perhaps the changes that have occurred, even the ones that taught you challenging lessons sometimes.

This is a live recording, and only a direct stereo feed from my live performance rig. Therefore, the mix is never quite perfect. If you saw me perform live, this is basically the sort of thing you would hear.

I'm working on a new studio album, which hopefully will be done in 2018 sometime.

Thanksgiving 2017 (Live Recording) - Thoughts on Gratitude

The Eclipse project is the primary work of one solo artist, whom oversees, composes, produces, records and mixes all projects. Working with a rotating collective of guest musicians and artists that is constantly evolving and changing. Creating electronic-based music that crosses many genres.  From ambient to industrial sounding, you will find all expressions of electronic embodied in Eclipse.  The collective started as a forum to give musicians and artists a voice that is different than the shallow and often negative roles of modern media and music.  Eclipse fuses powerful messages of social consciousness, environmentalism, and peace into their beats, returning meaning into music.  All that, and a catchy beat, too.  Music with a message doesn’t need to be boring or bland!

Based mostly in Toronto, the collective consists of several musicians from different genres, from folk-rock to rap, and artists who create visuals and video for the collective.  Eclipse is always expanding and looking for new voices, if you like what we do, drop us a line and tell us about yourself.  Become part of something that can make a change.  

The lead producer plays various forms of hand percussion (20+ years) and Didgeridoo (18 years).

All Eclipse production work is original, and done the way all music "should" be done - composed by actual musicians & artists. I create and record everything from the ground up, not relying on sampling someone else's work or loops for main music beds.
